Are you restricted in antenna size at both ends? If one could be larger, that

Re: [AFMUG] 18GHz Licensed Link best power and Rx Sensitivity

2018-04-20 Thread chuck
Smaller (== lower gain) antennas are harder to measure FB due to the fact you
have to measure a weaker signal on the range.

For example, if you measure FB on an antenna that has a peak gain of 45 dB,
then at the peak the signal is pretty strong and well into a nice area of your
detector.

As you swing the antenna around and start measuring sidelobes referenced to the
peak, going 60 dB down from that strong peak signal still leaves you in a nice
functional area of the detector. But on a small antenna that may have 25 dB of
gain, all signals are 20 db down (compared to the bigger antenna) for all the
sidelobes too as far as the detector is concerned.

Trying to measure 60 dB down on a low gain antenna leaves you in the fuzzy
bottom of detector sensitivity. I would amp my tx antenna on the range and
preamp my detectors and was always a bit unsure at 60 dB down on any antenna
under 30dBi.

The guys with their fancy indoor nearfield ranges can probably do it without
problem.

Some clarification of the rules needed here.

1. 3 & 4 foot antennas are allowed in upper 6 GHz in certain areas. In the
late 70s / early 80s, the FCC designated congested areas in the 6.7 GHz band
where Category A or better antennas must be used. The Category A beamwidth and
gain requirement cannot be met by antennas less than 6 foot in diameter.

2. The minimum path length rule is also often misunderstood. FCC Rule 101.143
specifies 17 km for bands between 1850 and 7125 MHz and 5 km for bands between
10550 and 13250 MHz. But in both instances, shorter paths can be licensed as
long as the EIRPs are limited as specified in paragraph B of the same rule
part. No exceptions for entities or waivers required.

3. The smaller antennas that are now allowed in 6 GHz are required to meet
Category B2 which has relaxed beamwidth and pattern requirements for angles
less than 100 degrees and tighter requirements for angles greater than 100
degrees. The angles greater than 100 degrees must provide at least 60 dB of
discrimination. AFAIK, Commscope, RadioWaves and RFS are the only
manufacturers that meet these requirements.

Yeah, no. The minimum diameter in the L6 band is 3-foot and >/=70dB F/B ratio.
I believe only a few Radiowaves and Andrew/CommScope high-performance dishes
meet that spec. I believe that was part of the same change that allowed 60MHz
channel bandwidth.

The upper 6GHz band is still limited to 30MHz channels and 6-foot or larger
antennas.

Also, the minimum path length for both lower and upper 6GHz bands is 17km.
11GHz is 5km. I believe there are special considerations and waivers to this
for things like public safety agencies and such.

Yes, in so much as I don’t want to pay the extra $100 plus per month for each

If there is a 2 foot solution I want to find it. As I said Dragonwave will
work but I don’t want to wait.

Not necessarily, Dragonwave say 31dBm Tx power at 20148QAM on their new harmony
HP in 18Ghz. That gets me my 4.5 nines (most vendors today are 19 dBm or
lower). 33 dBm at 512QAM!!! However not available in 80 Mhz channels until
end of year.

I was hoping someone else would come close.

If 2 foot OK in 6GHz that would help with a much longer link I had given up on

In 11GHz it's not just range, but cat A vs. cat B antennas. The typical
smaller 2' antenna is going to be FCC cat B. You could try for a ETSI
class 4 antenna.

Re: [AFMUG] 18GHz Licensed Link best power and Rx Sensitivity

Yeah, no. The minimum diameter in the L6 band is 3-foot and >/=70dB F/B
ratio. I believe only a few Radiowaves and Andrew/CommScope
high-performance dishes meet that spec. I believe that was part of the
same change that allowed 60MHz channel bandwidth.

The upper 6GHz band is still limited to 30MHz channels and 6-foot or
larger antennas.

Also, the minimum path length for both lower and upper 6GHz bands is
17km. 11GHz is 5km. I believe there are special considerations and
waivers to this for things like public safety agencies and such.

Fcc changed the rules. You can do 2’ in 6ghz now.

Why are you limited to 2’ dishes??

Can you do a 2’ and 3’ (or 4’)??

What you are trying to do breaks the laws of physics no matter who’s

Download the integra spec sheet and it has all the tx power and recieve
sensitivity for all the models, channel sizes and QAM levels in charts on the
last few pages.

We have a lot of 6 mile SAF integra-W links on 2’ dishes that have no problem
even in heavy summer downpours. We are in NW ColoRADo.

We've got an Exalt G2-18 w/ Radiowaves HP2-18's at ~2.5 miles. 38dBi +
19dBm Tx at 40MHz/256QAM. RSL is -35dBm. Sometimes it's a little too
hot. Probably needs ATPC enabled.

There’s a HP version of the G and the W is even louder that that.

How far are you trying to shoot and why are you limited to 2’ dishes??

Download the integra spec sheet and it has all the tx power and recieve
sensitivity for all the models, channel sizes and QAM levels in charts on
the last few pages.

We have a lot of 6 mile SAF integra-W links on 2’ dishes that have no
problem even in heavy summer downpours. We are in NW ColoRADo.

Have a coordinator tell you how much power you can run on the path
before you decide to buy gear. You might be limited to the typical
14-20dBm Tx power due to other paths/licensees.

A Radiowaves HP2-18 is 38dBi. We have a 2.5 mile Exalt ExtendAir G2-18
link with that at both ends. +19dBm Tx power at 40MHz/256QAM. -35dBm
RSL. Rarely drops out in the rain.

Absolute highest power? I think there is an Aviat 18 GHz radio that is
something like +24 Tx power before you add the dish gain. Won't be cheap.
