Maybe because it is being left around by the folks hired by the State Dept. to
make it look so..

Contrary to popular belief, prayer rugs are not a requirement for a Muslim to
be able to perform his or her prayers :)
But those 'mats' 'rugs' 'sheepskins' do make for a multi purpose light rug
kind of like what the Cowboys carried with them in the Western Movies, rolled
up on back side of their saddle...typically used as a sleeping mattress or as a
pad between the horseback and the saddle.

but why would a prayer rug be left in the desert? If you carried it
that far, why drop it?

I have a friend who is the head of the border patrol union, in Yuma, I
think.
He claims that the Islamic folks are a big and increasing number of
illegal crossings.

They find prayer rugs out in the desert all the time.

Somehow they thought it's really easy to travel in Mexico with proper
IDs... You can cross into border easy enough... Getting further is
tougher... But Mexico has changed... Not sure how far they could have
made it.
