Zulip team chat  is open source 
(login but no installation required) and apparently offers free hosting for 
open source projects . The Lean prover 
community  uses Zulip 
 for collaborative mathematical proof 
engineering, and made the chat history available as an archive 
.

(client versions are apparently open sourced with a time delay).

Do you just hate everything you don't know or are there criteria? What chat
platform would you suggest instead?

Exactly. Telegram is nice, also for bots, but a bit limited compared to
Slack/Discord (only one "channel" per group).

But why use encryption for a public list. I would prefer a mailing list 
which is served by some mailman (see https://www.list.org/ for more) or 
some sympa (see https://www.sympa.org/ for more)


and indeed I won't install a proprietary application on my Debian/Linux 
to read such a list.
