Cool concept, but I'm guessing the first version won't work for something as
power-hungry as a big mobile robot...

Here's another idea...
I had forgotten that these pads (
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,106482,00.asp ) are
starting to be
available for recharging devices. All that needs done for the robot is to
have it drive on the pad and sit still to recharge (may have to
extend some
electrodes\contacts to the floor). If you wanted to lay out some
dough, you
could have a room full of these pads so the bot could move freely while
constantly recharging, thus meeting your objective..

Of course, it is still likely that the bot would get tangled
as it turns
thus countering the autoretract.. :( But perhaps this is
something for
it
to learn: Don't get tangled in the cord!

Yeah, sure... this is something the bot should be able to
learn. However,
the period while it's learning this may be very frustrating for
the human
parent of the creature ;-)) !!!
This really sounds very amusing to play with. In 6 months or so when
Novamente procedure-learning is further along, I may just buy myself one
of
these gizmos for an April Fools Day present!!
