Abstract

People often blindfold themselves to try to understand what it is like
to be blind. Though this “blindness simulation” can trigger empathy
toward blind people, it can also mislead people about blindness,
because it highlights the initial trauma of becoming blind rather than
the realities of being blind. In this article, I review disability
research and scholarship on the positive and negative effects of
disability simulations, showing that such simulations promote empathy
but can also promote discrimination. In order to accurately teach
about blindness, teaching exercises should incorporate mastery of
blindness skills and meaningful contact with other blind people. More
research is needed to determine how blindfolded learning should be
best incorporated into the curriculum for training teachers of the
blind.

Blindness, simulation, attitudes, discrimination, professional development

Introduction

In a banquet hall, the lights are turned out and attendees struggle to
serve themselves a meal in the dark. Sponsored by a fund-raising
organization, this dinner culminates in an appeal for donations to
support medical research on the elimination of blindness. Meanwhile,
at a Girl Scout camp, children are paired off and one child in each
pair closes her eyes, while her partner leads her about. The exercise
is intended to help the Girl Scouts build trust and learn how to
depend on one another for help. Finally, in a classroom, blindness
professional trainees wear low-vision simulator goggles. They are
asked to walk from one side of the table to the other, a task they
find daunting. All of these are examples of “blindness simulations”
critiqued by blindness activists (French, 1992; Maurer, 2012;
Willoughby & Duffy, 1989).

Disability simulations are active learning exercises in which people
use props to temporarily adopt physical impairments—such as using a
blindfold or low-vision goggles to temporarily obscure their sight.
They are often used to educate schoolchildren about disabilities, to
help train professionals who work with the disabled, and even to
foster interdependence and teamwork (for a review, see Flower, Burns,
& Bottsford-Miller, 2007). Blindness simulations often appeal to
educators, because they involve and engage students, and they motivate
students to empathize with blind people.

However, if not done carefully, blindness simulations can give a
distorted impression of blindness, reinforcing misconceptions about
the capacities of blind people. These problems can occur if the
simulation is focused on the first moments of blindness rather than
everyday life after adjustment to blindness. These risks have long
been apparent to disability activists and, more recently, to
experimental psychologists.

In this article, I review research and commentaries on the effects of
disability simulations. I will argue that blindness simulation is
beneficial only if it (a) includes hands-on training in the skills of
blindness and (b) involves meaningful contact with blind people. More
research is needed to investigate how existing simulations and other
teaching exercises influence practitioners’ attitudes toward
blindness.

Simulation Promotes Empathy

Disability simulations are often intended to promote empathic concern
and a desire to help and accommodate people with disabilities. There
is evidence that simulating disability can indeed increase empathy and
helping. In an early experiment (Clore & Jeffery, 1972), college
students were randomly assigned (by a coin flip) to navigate their
campus either on foot or in a wheelchair for 25 minutes. Afterward,
the students who had used the wheelchair reported feeling more empathy
toward people with physical impairments, reported liking the
researcher (who visibly used a wheelchair) more, and indicated more
interest in donating funds to accessibility-related groups than the
students who had not used the wheelchair. Even four months later,
students who had used the wheelchair were more likely to volunteer to
assist a disabled person when asked. In another study (Wadlington,
Elliot, & Kirylo, 2008), student teachers expressed more sympathy and
desire to accommodate dyslexic students after they simulated dyslexia
by attempting to read degraded print. Finally, rehabilitation
professionals expressed more empathy in qualitative comments after
participating in a multi-impairment simulation (Wilson et al., 2009).
These simulations not only prompt a desire to help, but also promote
student enjoyment and positive assessment of them, making

[Ai] Nidhi Sharma reports in the ET today: Thawar Chand Gehlot seeks exemption on GST on goods for disabled

2017-06-28 Thread avinash shahi via Ai
Council bringing assistive devices and other exempt goods for the
differently abled under the tax net from July
1, social justice and empowerment minister
Thawar Chand Gehlot
is batting for a last-minute exemption.
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/thawar-chand-gehlot-seeks-exemption-on-gst-on-goods-for-disabled/articleshow/59360153.cms
Inundated with representations from across the country, the social
justice and empowerment ministry has sent missives to finance ministry
and
GST Council
to look into the matter again.

“I have taken this up with finance minister Arun Jaitley,” Gehlot told
ET. “All the representations have also been forwarded to
GST
Council to take a call. In fact, the rate of taxation on assistive
devices has been brought down from the earlier proposed slab of 18% to
5% now. We hope
that it will be exempted after the meeting of GST Council on Friday.”

Under GST, assistive devices used by people with disabilities have
been brought under the tax net with slabs ranging between 5% and 18%.
So far, these
devices have been exempt from excise and customs duty.

After its May 18 meeting, GST Council approved GST of 18% on
Braille
 typewriters and cars for physically
disabled,
12% on Braille paper, Braille watches and hearing aids, 5% on
carriages (motorised and non-motorised) for the differently abled,
wheelchairs and assistive
devices.

“We hope they would be exempted. We have received representations from
all over India. But the final call is that of GST Council,” Gehlot
said.

when the moderator does not willing to respect our opinions, then why
should we follow his guidelines.

Gradually the quality of the list is getting down.

why do the people required 2 different lists.
today there are 2 different lists, tomorrow it may extend another 2 or 3 lists.
when vidya got harassed for asking her number, the moderator doesn’t
poke his nose into the matter, but, when my friend akash shared about

For moderators information, even today, many people doesn’t don’t have

Re: [Ai] Needs Assessment Survey - Violence Against with Disabilities

2017-06-28 Thread sunakshi via Ai
Dear Vivek,

Thank you for expressing your concern in such an impassioned fashion.

I understand your dismay at the state of affairs regarding women with
disabilities in our society. But we cannot expect changes to happen
overnight, nor can we stop working on the issue even if the changes that we
desire are not immediately forthcoming. You cannot overcome a situation
that has persisted for millennia to change in a go. While it is true that
even the work of even large Ngos in the field of disability is only a drop
in the ocean. It is better to do something than nothing and throw up one's
hands in despair.

We at Center for Women’s Development Studies are researchers, so our
primary objective is bringing forth greater understanding of the prevailing
situation and we are trying to do this through this project. Since it is
true that pure research in the field of disability may not be justified, we
have attached an action component to our research in the form of a legal
literacy toolkit. We cannot, nor do we claim to change the scenario in
foreseeable future but that does not mean that we stop trying in our small
way. We encourage you to participate in this process by filling up the
needs assessment survey form.

Don't take easy please, we have also have a lot of alternative and the then
government was interested to give the leaders one or the other job so that
the movement becomes unsuccessful. Had I did it, I would have served as a

This is not fair! Research and studies must be conducted to build up cases for
advocacy. It is easy for us to point fingers.

I agree it is sad the way the Railways treated the disabled lady on her journey
from Nagpur to Delhi. It is truly angering and frustrating. But, it is unfair
to point fingers and accuse the people who are trying to do something about the
problem.

Believe me, it is extremely tough to bring about change, specially in massive

including myself do nothing about it. Let us not put down people who are trying

[Ai] Using a Barbie doll, 12-year-old deaf and mute girl explains sexual assault on her

2017-06-28 Thread avinash shahi via Ai
INDORE: A 12-year-old
deaf and mute rape survivor
used a doll to narrate the horror that she had to undergo at the
hands of her cousin...Dhar police along with counselors in Indore
recorded the statements
of the minor deaf and mute survivor using a doll on Tuesday...The
incident had left such an impact on the child's mind that she became
quiet and refused
to interact with anyone. Following this, Dhar police contacted Anand
Service Society director Gyanendra Purohit and his wife Monica to
interact with the
minor in sign language...The couple reached the survivor's house in
Kumhar Gaddha area of Dhar and used a doll to record the statements of
the girl...Police
said the girl conveyed the information on what had happened to her by
referring to the private parts of the doll...Initially, the minor, who
was in a state
of shock, did not disclose anything to her family. However, when she
was no longer able to deal with the pain and excessive bleeding, she
confided in her
mother about the incident using sign language..."The girl approached
us along with her mother. Her mother told us that the girl's
19-year-old cousin Omkar,
who was living at her home for summer vacations, had raped her on
finding her alone in the house," Shailendra Singh Jadon, city Kotwali
police station
in-charge told TOI.
Recommended By Colombia.."The girl's parents, who are daily wage
labourers, had gone to work whereas her brothers were at school when
the incident took
place. Omkar allegedly locked the room and raped her. He also
threatened her of dire consequences," Jadon added...While taking to
the counselors, the minor
started putting her hand in the lower apparel of the doll and also
narrated the entire way in which the accused had 'mistreated'
her..."She was not comfortable
in interacting about the incident and so we thought of bringing her a
Barbie doll as a gift. There was also a male doll. She used both the
dolls and showed
us exactly how she was raped," Gyanendra Purohit told TOI..."A case
has been registered and the accused will be arrested at the earliest.
He had fled the
house soon after the girl's mother came to know about the incident,"
said Jadon..

Re: [Ai] Interview

2017-06-28 Thread r k sarin via Ai
I do not agree with you Avinash, one of our blind friend spoiled 2 jobs for
his personal interest. I know those days when no rotest was allowed in Delhi
due to akali movement and we continued the movement under the banner of the
Progressive Society for the Sightless Persons and that continued almost for
158 days. Our movement has got different implications and different impacts.
The issue how to use this situation.

At JNU, the mighty government's crackdown on all types of
protests/demonstration has broke the backbone of the activists. And we
don't have a single blind teacher on the university role. Students are
very concerned about their future in general and blind students are
more worried due to seat/cuts and other challenges they're to face as
blind candidates in the employment market.

scholars

come from the middle class group and do not wish to declass them for
whatsoever reason they know better, that is why they choose easy way and
short cuts. We are afraid of developing new leadership and that is why we
have to depend upon old leaders.

You're right to some extent sir.
I think blind intelligentia in India is a very miniscule community
which consists of different shades of scholars. Many among them lack
elan and perseverance to carry on the battle against the
administration. In India, among blind people Very few are able to
complete Phds and take disability studies and advocacy as their
professional entreprise. We're still at a nascent stage and can hope
that things would become better in the times to come. If we are to
make any impact on the government's approach towards blind people, We
need to have synergy between the NGO sector and the academia. In the
west, disabled academics influence the policies and are taken very
seriously. We should advocate for more disabilities studies programmes
in Indian universities.

HYDERABAD: With the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), for the

affiliated to it must appoint special educators as part of inclusive
education, the Special Educators Forum of India (SEFI) has sent two
representations to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and the Navodaya

Ajay R Raj, a visually impaired student from Thiruvananthapuram, emerged as
the all-India topper in the differently abled category of the CBSE Class
XII board examinations, by scoring 98 per cent marks.

Ajay, a student of the St Thomas Higher Secondary School in the capital,
topped the category with an impressive score of 490 out of 500. The son of
an autorickshaw driver from Kozhikode, Ajay has been suffering from
diminishing eyesight from his fourth standard onwards, caused due to venous

A student of the humanities group, Ajay used to record all the lectures
from school and store it in his phone and laptop. He would listen to them
whenever he found free time. Ajay had studied at a Malayalam medium school
in Thottipalam up to his Class X, which he had passed with high marks as
well. He then opted for CBSE syllabus at St Thomas HSS, and took to English
medium learning like duck to water.

[Ai] Needs Assessment Survey - Violence Against with Disabilities

2017-06-28 Thread sunakshi via Ai
Dear Friend,

The Center for Women’s Development Studies (CWDS), New Delhi is engaging in
an action research project titled ‘Violence against Women and Girls with
Physical Disabilities in India: Understanding the Issues and Promoting
Legal Empowerment’. Professor Renu Addlakha is the project director of this
two year research-cum-advocacy project being funded by the South Asia
Women’s Fund (SAWF). The project has a two-fold agenda:

a. To conduct empirical research on the topic of violence against women and
girls with physical disabilities (including sensory disabilities) in India.
This work would enter the public domain in the form of presentations at
seminars, conferences and publications.

b. To develop a legal literacy training manual for empowerment of girls and
women with physical disabilities (including sensory disabilities). This
manual would be distributed among NGOs, schools, colleges, corporate and
other organisations and institutions engaging with disability issues in
different domains of public life in India.

As a first step into this work, we are conducting a needs assessment survey
with critical stakeholders in the disability sector to get an idea of their
opinion on prevalence and importance of the issue and the need for a legal
advocacy tool to empower a vulnerable group of the population to access
justice.

Given your engagement in development sector, we have no doubt that you
would participate in this study and we hope to receive your response.

Please find the link of the survey at -

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScEImtcJzJJaBZcCpQYFKSnMdGoBmxHx4o-Ux2oXnY43zGNvQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

We are having some difficulty in making google survey form accessible for
Person with Visual Impairment. We have devised following method to resolve
this technical issue.Firstly, you are required to turn on screen reader on
your system. It is an in-built facility in Windows and Mac. After screen
reader activation process is done, open the attached Word document. Mark
your choices by putting X against the given options and filling answers
wherever required. Subsequently, mail the completed form to r...@cwds.ac.in
.

Best Regards,

Renu Addlakha
