[LincolnTalk] Crafts

2024-06-20 Thread Sarah Cannon Holden
Before I take all kinds of recyclables to the Transfer Station on Saturday I am
wondering if there are crafters like me who can imagine a use for some of this
stuff. Containers for paints for kids. Egg crates to make paper flowers.
Containers for storage of goodies for gifts. Toilet paper rolls for circles!
Storage containers. And so on.

I will attach a photo right away.

[LincolnTalk] Mold

2024-06-19 Thread sarah cannon holden
Greetings,

We have an office space in our garage that is carpeting - bad idea! In any
case mold has been detected and we are thinking of replacing the carpet
with a wooden floor. Does anyone have a suggestion of someone to do this
kind of work - who can be sure that there is no mold coverup with the
installation of wood, etc? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Perhaps I do not understand the archives but I don't see how I can search

[LincolnTalk] Fwd: Your request for Reasonable Accommodation at Special Town Meeting Re: Voting on Saturday

2023-12-01 Thread Sarah Cannon Holden
osition is not merely speculative.  The COVID-era relief discussed above authorized remote representative town meetings, but not
hybrid representative town meetings.  The legislation extending such relief now states clearly that hybrid remote town meetings, i.e., with some people participating in person and some participating remotely, is permitted.  No similar authority is granted
to open town meeting municipalities, however.

Where the Legislature has specifically authorized remote/hybrid town meetings for representative town meetings but not open town meetings, this must be viewed as intentional.  In
fact, the format of the open town meeting is established in the Massachusetts Constitution and any changes to that format would require a constitutional amendment.
See, Opinion of the Justices, 229 Mass. 601, 609 (1918) (holding that the Constitution would have to be amended to allow representative town meeting form of government).  The fact that the Legislature specifically allowed remote participation
in representative town meetings but not open town meetings strongly suggests that remote participation in an open town meeting is not constitutional.  In my opinion, a procedure that would offend the state constitution would not constitute a reasonable accommodation.

Therefore, it is my opinion that a requirement some Town Meeting members to participate remotely in an in-person open town meeting would not be reasonable, as it would result in
a fundamental alteration of the meeting and would result in undue financial and administrative burdens to the Town.

Please let me know if there are any additional questions on this issue.

Very truly yours,

Lauren

Subject: Your request for Reasonable Accommodation at Special Town Meeting Re: [LincolnTalk] Voting on Saturday

Dear Jane Marie,

I am forwarding your request to
Town Administrator Tim Higgins. Please
contact Tim as soon as possible with your request for Reasonable Accommodations for your mother. Tim’s office phone is 781-259-2601.

Provided that your mother is a registered voter, your request for Reasonable Accommodations should be
 able to be accommodated.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Towns have an obligation to make
their Town Meetings accessible to people with disabilities and to respond to requests for reasonable accommodations at Town Meeting. The Massachusetts Office on Disability wrote a Memorandum on 06/04/2023, posted on the mass.gov website, to provide guidance
on these obligations. Here is the link:

I have also copied this section from this mass.gov website at the end of my email
 for your easy reference, highlighting
the areas that are relevant to your mother’s situation.

Importantly, the ADA, which is a Federal Law, requires Towns
to make Reasonable Accommodations. The Massachusetts Office on Disability’s memo specifies that remote
access could be as simple as a person with a disability watching the Town Meeting on the Local Access Cable Station and calling or texting the Moderator or an assistant Moderator if
they wish to speak or vote on a warrant article.

In addition to Lincoln’s Town Administrator, Tim Higgins, I am copying Lincoln’s Assistant Town Administrator,
Dan Pereira, who is also the ADA Coordinator for Lincoln; Lincoln’s Chair of Selects, Jim Hutchinson; and Lincoln’s Town Meeting Moderator, Sarah Cannon Holden; as well as Bethany Brown, ADA Coordinator at the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, to make
them aware of your request for Reasonable Accommodation on behalf our your mother, who lives at the Commons in Lincoln.

Please note, you may reach Bethany Brown on her cell at 781-429-9286 (cell) to discuss any concerns about
your request for Reasonable Accommodations for your mother.

[LincolnTalk] Babysitting and Tutoring

2023-06-21 Thread sarah cannon holden
My granddaughter asked me to post this letter to LincolnTalk.

Sarah

Hello,

My name is Cannon Martin, and I will be a junior in high school next year.
I am spending most of the summer in Lincoln with my grandparents as I rehab
an ACL injury, and *I am looking for either babysitting or tutoring jobs. *

*Babysitting*: I have a lot of babysitting experience, as I have been
babysitting every summer and occasionally during the school year for the
past 3 years. I am comfortable babysitting children of any age.

*Tutoring*: I am offering tutoring in either Math or French. I am
comfortable tutoring any age up to (and including) 10th grade. I am a
strong student and have a 4.0 cumulative GPA. I enjoy teaching and am
confident tutoring in both Math and French. You will need to provide the
material (there may be a few exceptions depending on what grade your child
is in/what they are studying), and I will provide tutoring as many times a
week as needed, schedule permitting.

*Math*: I have completed Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus, and
can also tutor middle/elementary school students.
*French*: I am entering French 5, and am comfortable tutoring French
students who are learning up to (and including) French 3 material.

*Availability*: If you are interested in either babysitting or tutoring, I
am available before 11:30am and after 3pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and
Friday, and all day Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. I am available every
night to babysit as well. I will be in Lincoln through the end of July.

Please reach out if you are interested.* My email

What a lovely note. All the town boards and staff deserve the credit you
have given. They work endlessly to do what is best for our community. I
met you at the Transfer Station when I was collecting signatures for my

forward thinking aspects of its design and construction. I know that many
of us would love to see it when it is finished - that might bring a larger
crowd than you want so you better be careful

We welcome you to Lincoln and are pleased that you were able to attend this

Lincoln once you move in.

With best wishes,

[LincolnTalk] Town Moderator Asks for your VOTE

2023-01-10 Thread sarah cannon holden
To Lincoln Voters,

I wish to announce my bid for re-election as Lincoln’s Town Moderator. I
have served in this role since 2010 and look forward to a fifth three year
term. In my role I have presided over Town Meetings covering a variety of
issues with the goal of encouraging and managing an open and respectful
debate among the town’s voters. I know that this goal remains steadfast in
my mind even if we may veer off course now and then. I enjoy the
challenges that pop up quite unexpectedly and which require on the spot
rulings. I welcome moments of candor and humor as well as the caring and
serious deliberations between town boards and voters. It is my
responsibility to appoint members to the Finance and Capital Planning
Committees, the Personnel Board and the Scholarship Fund Committee.

My professional training as a mediator/arbitrator often comes in handy, and
over the years I have learned many of the finer details of the legislative
process. Our democratic process is a brilliant idea which requires a level
of trust, respect and participation to be effective. In Lincoln I have
witnessed the finest expression of democracy among our citizens. It has
been my privilege and fortuitous opportunity to serve as Lincoln’s Town
Moderator for twelve years. Last fall I was elected to serve a 3 year term
on the governing board of the Massachusetts Moderators Association.

I always welcome newcomers to town and to Town Meeting. They can bring new
suggestions and perspectives - and I am ever hopeful that they will step
forth to serve on a board or committee.I look forward to seeing you at
Town Meeting on Saturday, March 25th and I ask for your vote on Monday,
March 27, 2023.

[LincolnTalk] A momentary change of focus.

2022-11-28 Thread sarah cannon holden
The Cocoanut Grove Fire occurred 80 years ago in a Boston Nightclub. It is
one of the most devastating fires in Boston's history. Nearly 500 people
died. They were trapped inside long before exit doors and other
precautions were in place. I thought that the following very edited
version of one part of that history would be interesting to others in
Lincoln.

Sarah Cannon Holden

In 1943 my father, Bradford Cannon, led the team of surgeons who cared for
the survivors of the Cocoanut Grove fire.

Fifty years later, my brother Laurie was a senior captain with United
Airlines. The first officer asked Laurie where he was from.

“Boston.”

“Hmm,” said his first officer, “the only person I know of from Boston is a
doctor named Bradford Cannon.”

“Really? He’s my father.”

“Well, he saved my mother’s life.”

“Yes, when she was 20 years old she was burned at the Cocoanut Grove fire.
Her boyfriend died. She later married my father.” He paused.

“And, my middle name is Bradford – after your dad.”

My father specifically remembered the man’s mother who was very badly
burned. Ultimately she moved to San Diego.

There was soon to be a medical meeting there. My dad and my mother, then
in their 80s, bought their tickets and left for San Diego – maybe to attend
the meeting but certainly to see his patient after all these years.

Thank you Kathleen. A beautiful tribute. It truly captures the reminder
your mother provided me each time I saw her walking north or south along
Lincoln Road - just keep moving, have a goal each day and don't let my age
tell me what I can and cannot do. She was an inspiration to all who saw
her.

Best wishes to all her family,

Sarah

[LincolnTalk] Original Intent

2022-05-24 Thread sarah cannon holden
Good Evening,

I just have to speak out having just heard the latest news from Texas. The
guns in this country have to go. The framers of the Constitution would be
horrified if they saw what is happening in this country with gun violence.
When the Constitution was written men had muskets that take time to
reload. Now everyone can have assault rifles and handguns. What say you
Justices of the Supreme Court? What say you original intent proponents?
The 2nd Amendment does not say that eveyone can have the guns available
today that are bought to kill innocent people. No it says "A *well
regulated * militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the
right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." We
have gone so far beyond that original intent that we are all complicit at
some level for the ongoing violence here. I say, let us protest. Let us
march. Let us insist that Congress, state legislatures and the Supreme
Court act - now... We must speak out.

I pray for the 14 children, their teacher - and all the lives that will be
touched by this horrendous tragedy.

Thank you. Sarah

*A film, and a filmmaker, transformed in ‘A Reckoning in Boston’*

By Matthew Gilbert

 Globe Staff,Updated January 14, 2022, 2:20 p.m.

A scene from "A Reckoning in Boston."Lost Nation Pictures

The Clemente Course in the Humanities gives low-income adults a chance to
learn about literature, history, and philosophy for free. In 2014,
filmmaker James Rutenbeck began filming a documentary about the Dorchester
location of the national organization and the transformative power of the
humanities. But in the process, as he began to focus his story on two
students, he started to feel his distance from the subject of his own movie
as a white man from a privileged background.

His project evolved. Those two students, Kafi Dixon and Carl Chandler,
became producers of the resulting documentary, called “A Reckoning in
Boston,” as well as co-narrators. On *Monday at 10 p.m. on GBH 2*, the film
will have its PBS premiere as part of the* “Independent Lens”* series.

When it appeared in last year’s Independent Film Festival Boston, then
Globe film critic Ty Burr called it “a superb examination of our city’s
inbred racial inequities that tackles the subject on both the
systemic/structural level and the deeply personal.”

Rutenbeck, in a release, explains what happened while he was making the
film: “I realized ever-present structural racism was something I could no
longer ignore, and with the help of my subjects, co-producers and friends
Kafi and Carl, we transformed the film. Our collaboration led to an honest
and raw exploration of economic and racial inequality, in a city with a
glaringly wide racial wealth divide. I hadn’t really understood the lives
of low-income people of color, and had failed to recognize my own
complicity in the structures that were holding them back.”

[LincolnTalk] January 6th

2022-01-06 Thread Sarah Cannon Holden
Dear Lincoln Neighbors.

Please hold Winston Pingeon, born and raised in Lincoln and my friend, who was
serving as a Capitol Police Officer one year ago today. He did all he could to
protect the Capitol as well as our Republic. He was injured that day. He still
endures the mental scars. Together, we all owe it to him and everyone in this
country to find a way forward in peace and with justice for all.

Thank you. Sarah

Re: [LincolnTalk] Seeking Housecleaner

2021-11-14 Thread Sarah Cannon Holden
I am curious. Do people pay by the cleaning job or by the hour? If by the job
what does the hourly pay amount to? Or, if by the hour what is the rate?
Thank you

[LincolnTalk] Fun Fall Help...

2021-11-04 Thread sarah cannon holden
Good Morning,

I am looking for one or maybe two strong people to help my husband and me
with fall cleanup and wood splitting - splitting with a machine! You would
be rolling logs a few feet to the splitter and then piling the split logs
nearby. There may be some brush to pick up and other fall tasks. PLEASE
let me know if you can help out. Our former faithful helpers are now away
in college or on their first jobs.

[LincolnTalk] Painting Needed

2021-08-16 Thread sarah cannon holden
I need to have a small painting job done sometime between August 20 and
24. White walls, window frames but not small panes. One room about 14x14,
a small bathroom and a small kitchenette. Let me know if you and someone
you know could do this.

Thank you.
