Looks like the perl compatible regular expression library.  What are
you compiling it under ?  If it's a Debian based distro you will need to
'apt-get install libpcre3-dev', with deadrat systems it will be sommething
like 'yum install pcre3-devel' - use 'yum search pcre' to find the
-devel libraries.  Yo may also have the dbm development libs missing too.

I suspect that you already know this :-)

As a long time Debian User (1996) may I humbly suggest that you
ditch Debian's implementation, download the latest versions of exim,
spamassassin and clamav from the web and build them all from source.
It all just works as per the manual and you'll get a better understanding
of how it all hangs together.  I've always done this with Debian -
(I use it as a high quality base).  YMMV of course.

Out of the box and for simple situations, Debian's way sort of works -
but it's always been a compromise to try and be everything to all users.

I fully expect to get flamed for the above so apologies to the rest of
the list - the amount of confusion caused by Debian's exim (and other
packages) 'way of doing things' is legendary`.

i386 or amd64?

Looking to build a firewall for a fairly busy (25+mb) site. Hardware is 
Dell PE2850, 2 Xeon 64-bit CPUs, 4GB RAM, 6 em(4) interfaces. Software 
is primarily pf(4) and relayd(8).

Not so long ago the recommendation was to use the i386 build for a 
slight perfomance and stability benefit. Is that still the case? What 
are the advantages and shortcomings of amd64?

Guys - please step back a bit - my original email was not intended to
start a flame war on the merits of sender callouts.  Please keep the
discord to yourselves and think twice.  Most of you seem to have latched
onto the sender callouts and focussed on that, nobody has commented on
whether I should whitelist a domain because an ISP apparently designed
a system that sends out administrative emails (including invoices)
from an address that doesn't exist.

Let's draw a line under this issue now and imagine I never said anything.

Can we get back to being civil to each other please.

Hi,

I use exim to receive and process my emails - have done for years.
I also use sender callouts - have done for years.  Occasionally emails
get rejected because they are sent from non-existent addresses and sender
callouts don't like that.

Recently plusnet (www.plus.net) (an ISP !!!) sent me some administrative
emails that were rejected due to sender callouts, so - I raised a support
call and asked them to fix their systems and change the envelope addresses
to something sensible - I don't care what they change it to as long as
it resolves to a valid address.  After much toing and froing, I got the
following back, basically they're telling me to whitelist their broken
addresses because 'the system is currently working as it was designed'.

I realise I'm not strictly sticking to the RFC's 'be liberal in what
you accept' in this case but why should I whitelist for their brain dead
configs ?

Before I go and really bend their ear on why they shouldn't be sending
emails with invalid addresses, and that I shouldn't really have to
whitelist their addresses because how can I know what the next failing
address will be if their systems are designed to be broken and that for
an ISP to have broken systems is really unacceptable, is there anybody
on the list that works for plusnet who can point me at the right email
address for their mail admins so I can make an appeal to the right people
instead of... ?  I'm resisting adjectives here because I've worked for
a lot of years in a support environment and I don't want to label the
whole plusnet team.

ISTR in one of the earlier RFC's that there was a 'should not send from a
non-existent email address' and also a 'be conservative in what you send'
but I can't find them in recent RFC's, have things changed so much that
they can configure servers this way and ignore the problems ? (I don't
assiduously read RFC's nowadays).  What are the current RFC's regarding
good mail server etiquette ?

I must admit plusnet have normally been good in responding to queries
and support calls - but I'm amazed at their attitude over this and it
makes me wonder what other corners they are cutting in order to provide
their service.

Getting intermittent Fatal Error; seems to be the problem reported here 
http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=50027
in that the problem is intermittent, and also causes other php applications to 
produce fatal errors. Therefore,
seems to be an internal php/apache problem causing cross infection of separate 
processes.

We were on php 5.2 on Ubuntu 8.04. Upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and php 5.3.2 and 
immediately hit this problem.

Decided to switch to Debian 6 as it supports 5.3.3 which fixes a number of bugs 
in 5.3.2, but still getting
this problem although it now only occurs after 1-2 days.

The error always occurs at the same point in the code, but after refreshing a 
few times, the problem goes away.

Inserted debug logging to file to track where the error is occurring and 
isolated the problem to the following
statement:-

$this->paths=array_merge($this->paths,$path);   

The log showed the array $this->paths to be empty both before and after this 
statement, and the array $path
to contain data. Changed the statement to be:-

if (empty($this->paths)) {
  $this->paths=$path;
} else {
  $this->paths=array_merge($this->paths,$path);
}

The statement still failed to set $this->paths. So in a final attempt at a work 
around, we changed the code
to:-

if (empty($this->paths)) {
  foreach($path as $key=>$value) {
 $this->paths[$key]=$value;
  }
} else {
  $this->paths=array_merge($this->paths,$path);
}

This seemed to work, except that the problem now occurs in a different piece of 
code. Again, after inserting
and checking debugging, it appears that the affected php statement does not 
complete, does not return the expected data
so causing a fatal error in subsequent code.

libraries.
Turns out that there was a libcrypto.so.0.9.8 which was being found, and which
was not updated by aptitude.

Moved it to another directory where it would not be found, the problem went 
away.
So this bug can be closed - which is excellent, particularly so close to the 
proposed release!

Might blow the budget a bit but I've just ordered QNAP TS210 (£168 inc
VAT & Delivery from www.cclonline.com

.

It's just been delivered and I'll be sorting it over the weekend.  It has
an external PSU and runs ~14W.  Will take 2TB drives and provides loads
of other stuff.  The installed OS is Linux - don't know what flavour but
I suppose it will be replaceable with Ubuntu.

I bought it as recommended by a friendly Sun engineer who came to site
yesterday :)

Long story but I bought two 2TB drives to replace two ageing 330GB drives
in my shuttle only to find the MB doesn't support SATA II so I ended
up spending more wonga on a barebones box then discovered the TS210.
My son's dead chuffed - he's getting the old shuttle :)

I've currently got two 1TB drives hanging off a slug (NSLU2) running
debian but it's very unreliable so I'm hoping this solution will work.

I'll let you know what it's really like when I get it built.

ROTFL.

I'd also suggest that if you're playing with recursion, you shouldn't
need a loop counter.  With recursion you should have a well defined
problem so that you know it won't run out of resources and you should
build checks into your algorithm so that it will throw an exception if
it's passed out of band data.

[Bacula-users] Restore fails after 23.0 GB

I am attempting to restore a backup for which the files have exceeded the
retention period and therefore I need to restore the whole backup in order
to extract the files I want.

This is fine, except that the restore job keeps failing after it has
restored 23.0 GB out of a total of 68.0 GB. The first error message says:

 

"There is not enough space on the disk."

 

In reality the disk has 108 GB free space at this point. After this there
are a variety of errors produced including:

 

"Unexpected cryptographic session data stream."

"The data is invalid."

 

And the message report ends as follows:

I am restoring to a Windows Server 2003 (x64 Service Pack 2) client running
Bacula 5.0.1 for 64 bit clients. The Bacula server runs on a Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 5 server and is also version 5.0.1.

The storage media is an external USB hard disk and the data is encrypted.

 

During the restore job "status dir" shows:

RestoreFiles . is waiting on Storage ..

for the whole time the job is running.

 

All files are restored correctly until the first out of disk space error
occurs. I have attempted to run this job at least 5 times already and the
error is always the same.

They might not have physical add-in cards, but all i386/amd64 servers 
have graphics hardware attached to some interconnect bus. Otherwise 
they would not be able to paste those Microsoft Windows stickers. And 
on many the only way to turn off the on-board (often inferior) graphics 
hardware is to insert an add-in card...

Any idea where I can get dell_ie_module(MPTLSI_U320).

I presume this is for the Adaptec SCSI pci-e card that is installed in the 
server. The card was purchased after the server, ie not as part of the original 
build, it was bought from Dell however?

You want your system to reboot at 09:30 every day ?

Try the following :-

30 09 * * 0 /sbin/init 6

This should reboot at 09:30 every Sunday.

[Gluster-users] Booster- What Apache version works best?

Hi all, I have been testing out Booster with Apache 2.2 but it doesn't
seem to work. I'm getting core dumps. What am I doing wrong? Could
someone please explain how you got Booster working, what configure
statement did you use for apache, mpm=worker, prefork?? It seems to work
ok with apache 1.3 but gives me a warning about "unable to open file
descriptors above 15"

 

I'm using CentOS 5.3

Apache 2.2 (built from source)

GlusterFS 2.0.6 (4 nodes with server and client loaded on each box,
export DIR is about 300G, using apache to server jpg's)

[Gluster-users] Mod_glusterfs for newbie

Hi all, I have been struggling getting mod_glusterfs setup. I have read
the mod_glusterfs howto page on the gluster doc site, however I have no
idea if the module is actually working.
 
Here is my environment:
 
Centos 5.3
Apache 2.2.10/PHP5 ( installed from source)
Glusterfs 2.0.4
 
I would like to see other's vol files and snippets from your httpd.conf
file to be able to compare. I have glusterfs mounted @ /homegfs with my
apache virtual host doc pointing in that location. When files are served
from there, I have either seen "forbidden" errors  or device not found
in the apache logs. I feel like I'm really close to solving the puzzle
but there seems to be very little documentation on the gluster site
involving mod_glusterfs. Is it really that easy to get setup that it
needs only a small page on mod_glusterfs?
