Bug#1064102: shim-signed: Shim needs to be updated to latest version for Microsoft Surface devices

2024-02-17 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: shim-signed
Version: 1.40+15.7-1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate
***

I tried to install Debian on a Surface Pro 9, but it doesn't boot even with
a
disabled SecureBoot (secured core must be disabled in any case).
In order to have a bootable Linux you need to hack into /efi/boot/debian and
overwrite mmx64.efi with grubx64.efi or even try more exotic actions.
Here you can find a more detailed explanation on this bug and possible
working
solutions:
https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/issues/1274

[...]The good news is: This issue is fixed on the shim main branch, so once
the
distributions update their shim, this issue should disappear. The bad news
is,
that it is not possible for us to fix this, since we can't get a signed
shim /
MokManager from Microsoft.

For now there are three possible solutions:

Disable secureboot and don't enroll any certificates. This is certainly
the
easiest.
There is a Linux Mint installation image (21.2) that contains a working
MokManager. When you are trapped in the bugged state, you can use this to
finish the enrollment process. After the certificate is enrolled, you
should be
able to boot normally.
Downgrading the firmware.

Bug#1010985: bbswitch-dkms: Error in recognizing discrete and integrated graphic card

KDE/Wayland just a black screen with a cursor.

2022-05-05 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello,

I've difficulties in making KDE+Wayland work .
My system is Debian Unstable with Radeon (open source drivers) and the
KDE+W combination worked in the past, now all I get is a black screen with
a moving cursor and a lot of crashing stuff. Even if I login in a new clean
account the problem is the same.
On the other side GNOME+Wayland works as it should.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Bug#977540: grub-common: System access menu voice is missing

2021-02-06 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: grub-common
Version: 2.04-12
Followup-For: Bug #977540

Dear Maintainer,

I'm here to add some info's. I have had another BIOS firmware update and since
there was no improvement I have tried to purge and reinstall GRUB just to give
a try.
This is what occurred: immediately after re-installation of GRUB the "System
Access" menu voice is properly added and it stays at its place during the next
reboots, only if no "update-grub" happens. If this is the case the menu voice
is removed and it doesn't matter if the file /etc/default/grub.cfg has been
modified or not before. Best regards

Valerio

Bug#977540: grub-common: System access menu voice is missing

2020-12-16 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: grub-common
Version: 2.04-11
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I don't know exactly what's the root cause, because in the meantime my PC had
a UEFI bios update and Grub has had an update too.
What I've noticed so far is that the menu option to access the UEFI Bios,
called "System Access", has disappeared some days ago.
I've checked that 30_uefi-firmware, the script that I think is responsible for
that menu voice, is in its place, and so it is. At this point the only option
left to me to access UEFI Bios is to press the Esc button during the boot
process.
I expect just to have a specific menu voice in grub menu. Best regards

Valerio

Bug#950609: systemd: backlight service messes with screen brightness

Screen brightness controls (the two keyboard buttons designed to tune
brightness and the sliders in GNOME and KDE) are ineffective. If I press
the buttons or I move the slider, the OSD shows that brightness is changing
while actually it's not. I expect that brightness is being regulated by my
actions.

systemd-backlight@.service simply stores the current backlight value on

I know that it seems unrelated to systemd-backlight, that service should
store and restore brightness through reboots, but here:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1061387/linux/screen-brightness-resets-to-max-after-reboot-linux-/
I have found that systemd-backlight is keeping brightness to maximum and so
I tried to disable it just to see if my problem would be fixed, and so it
is.
The real culprit might be something else as you said previously, but at the
moment it is a decent workaround for me and it might be worth investigating
it further.

Tell me if you need more info. Best regards

Valerio

Dear Maintainer,

Brightness controls on keyboard (and any other mean except xrandr) have not
been working reliably since the day I installed Debian on my laptop: sometime
it was possible to tune brightness after a fresh boot, sometime only after a
S2R and resume.
Trying to find a solution, I have discovered that masking the backlight

I have double checked that enabling the service again restores the issue.

Plasma 5.17.5, wayland and Nvidia

2020-01-21 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello! Thank you for packaging Plasma 5.17.5, I'm trying it just now. I've
waited for this release since I knew it is supposed to support Nvidia EGLS and
to allow Nvidia driver to work with wayland under KDE.
To my disappointment, there is some problem and I cannot login in KDE with
wayland, what I get is just a blank screen (everything is fine under X). Is
there someone who has tried these packages in experimental and knows how to
make them work with Nvidia proprietary driver and wayland?

Bug#897040: fontconfig: .uuid files in font directories not removed during purge

2019-12-13 Thread Valerio Passini
Followup-For: Bug #897040

Package: fontconfig

Version: 2.13.1-2+b1

Dear Maintainer,

Today on removing fonts-noto-extra I've noticed that the package could not
be

purged, the reason is the persistence of a .uuid file inside the

/usr/share/fonts/truetype/noto/ directory.

Then I tried to remove the .uuid file manually and reinstall/remove the

package

again to reproduce and yes, the file is still there.

Bug#944422: dislocker: Dislocker gives segmentation fault on W 10 1903 encrypted volumes

2019-11-09 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: dislocker
Version: 0.7.1-4+b1
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,

I'm trying accessing a bitlocker encrypted drive created with Windows 10
version 1903. The drive is actually not accessible under Linux probably
because
of this bug upstream https://github.com/Aorimn/dislocker/issues/185. I've a
doubt about the severity of the bug, I've set it to "important" and not to
"grave", but since Windows 10 updates are mandatory, sooner or later the
people
affected will be the majority.
The bug seems fixed in the latest version.

SDDM without working buttons

2018-02-13 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello,

Maybe something is missing among the latest packages, so we need
just to wait a little, but SDDM buttons don't work anymore. If you are
logged in you can still poweroff, suspend and reboot the system. If
you are logged out, I mean, facing the login screen, the same actions
are not working anymore, you can just change the user.
It could be a permissions problem?

Ok. I have found this:

Launching, with options, "kalarm --disable-all" I've been able to clean the

[problem] kalarm executing an old poweroff command in loop

2017-12-30 Thread Valerio Passini
Hi, since the latest akonadi update, kalarm has started behaving weirdly
executing an old command I set up in 2015! The command was a timed poweroff
without any repetition, but the problem is that now it executes as soon
after I login in KDE, so the system halts every time after a minute. To
workaround on this I had to uninstall. kalarm, but I'm unable to find the
root of the problem. So far I've found that inside
.local/share/akonadi_kalarm_resource_9/ and *_6/ calendar.ics-# files are
spawning like crazy and the only way to stop them is to stop akonadi.
Please help

No taskbar and no mouse rightclick

2017-08-30 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello,

Yesterday I performed a dist-upgrade after more than a month that my
Debian/unstable was not updated and BOOM, KDE is not working any more...
I can login but the plasmashell seems missing even if the process is
running. There is only a blank desktop and no right click on mouse. KDE
itself takes a lot of time to load, but this maybe related to the other
problems. Please, help me fix this, thank

Touchpad toggle shortcut issue

2017-07-03 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello,

This week I had to reinstall Debian on my laptop and upgrade to Sid Now
I'm facing this small problem: the touchpad toggle button (fn+f9) has
stopped working in KDE as it used to. When I press the combo the touchpad
disables itself but a second press doesn't re-enable it. At the moment,
the combo works perfectly in GNOME and if I re-assign the shortcut in
systemsettings to enabling the touchpad, then it comes back to life in KDE
too, but this is just a worlaround. Does someone know a solution to it?
Thank you

Kmail attachment and drag and drop

2017-01-23 Thread Valerio Passini
Hi,

Maybe I'm wrong but I recall that some versions ago kmail was able to put
attachments in a message simply by drag'n'dropping a file from dolphin. Now
doing this simple action gives as a result a line in the message leading to the
real attachment that instead is not attached at all (for example file:///home/
valerio/Documents/blahblah.file)[1]. Is it something that can be changed in the
settings or just a bug?

Some problems with the last updates

2016-11-05 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello to everyone,

I have done the usual update to the latest packages (I'm on Sid) since I
have seen that the last uploads fullfilled the requirement to not uninstall
major programs of my kde installation, but I have found some issues:
1- sddm doesn't show any login mask if it is set to breeze theme: changing
the theme is a workround then, but I needed to login using lightdm to do it.
2 - My plasma session is damaged. Don't know exactly what it's missing but
plasmashell crashes on login leaving a black screen and the applications
launched in the previous session (luckily konsole).
Please, can you tell me some fixes?

You are right, changing the theme made the DE chooser to show again and after
that I could come back to the breeze theme that now has a chooser in a lower
left corner. Thankx

It is enabled by kernel config. Indeed, unchecking that option makes the

I'm hoping having done it right and I can try your first suggestion, but I
really cannot solve this problem by myself: sorry, I have no capabilities
in programming in any known and unknown computer language. Surely, I can
test all the patches you want and report the results but this is the best I
can do. Best regards

Hi Kalle,

I tried to understand the whole procedure related to git and git bisect, and
this is the first time I try it, so I can have done some mistake. In the git
log you'll find the commit that could be guilty for the behaviour I reported
yesterday. Anyhow, the resulting commit doesn't make any sense to me. If you
have any request, please send an email in cc to me, because I want to
unsuscribe this mailing list since it's too high volume for me. Best regards

Hi Pino,

I checked it: kipi-plugins is installed as it used to be. It seems I can do
all the import and export action from/to social networks (never tried them)
in gwenview but the basic manipulations are not there.

Gwenview plugins

2016-08-28 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello, with the latest updates Gwenview has got its plugins again but there
is something strange: most of the known plugins are missing and in their
place there is an almost useless, probably a place holder, plug in called
"kxml hello world image ...". Is this something that can be assessed in
packaging or is it an upstream problem? Best regards

Hi Mourad,

I don't mean that I can help you just because I have a bluetooth mouse too,
but I think you should give some more information like dmesg and lspci to help
you solving your problem, because it could be not a KDE related issue.
Keep in mind that, depending on the model of your mouse, the mouse can be set
to go in powersave mode after a while.
From a KDE point of view, have you checked that in systemsettings-> bluetooth
-> adpaters your adapter is set to "powered" and "always visible"? These are
my settings and the mouse is working very well: no disconnections, just a
moment to wait for when resuming the mouse from powersaving state.

Hi, thanks for the advice. I hope there was not a misunderstanding when I said
"I don't know what (who) disabled it and when, anyhow with...", because I
included myself among the "culprits" along with all the changes have come to
KDEPIM. Kmail is my favourite and only email client when I'm on PC because I

Thanks Mario, for your hint.

I recall that option to be enabled in the previous versions of Kontact/Kmail,
I don't know what (who) disabled it and when, anyhow with that option set, I
could see there is a "html document" in the "body part" and after some
clicking it was possible to display the full message.
Is this some kind of security feature? Isn't it too much? Personally I would
agree to not allow the downloading of external links, but concealing the text
might be a little confusing.

Here is how it's displayed: just a white page.

[KDEPIM Kmail] Wrongly displayed message

2016-07-28 Thread Valerio Passini
Today I've discovered that some messages from Amazon where not shown, I mean:
there was the subject, the sender, but no message inside. The message looks
like HTML stuff to me, but other messages of this kind are visible simply by
clicking on "enable html" string. The only hint I've is on the left side of
the message and it says "No html message", while the working messages reports
either "HTML message" or "Plain message". When replying, at least the text
part of the invisible message is embedded in, what's wrong then?

KDE Connect media player issue

2016-07-27 Thread Valerio Passini
I've recently discovered this application and it's really amazing and useful.
What is working not so good is the media remote control plugin, because it's
not able to automatically detected if you are using a compatible media player
like amarok or vlc (this should be documented somewhere). I've found a
workaround that consists in tinkering with KDE Connect options in
systemsettings: you need to disable and to enable multimedia control receiver,
than on the smartphone app the media player will show and will be working. I'm
guessing if this is a problem on the app side or on the KDE side, what I know
it's that the app is complaining about the KDE counterpart being older.

I'm testing it and I have found that a thread is no more grouped in a tree

I've seen this behaviour when applets are open. Weather applet is pretty
nasty for example. I suggest to you to start a session without any of them.

Hello,

As in the subject, Copy/Paste with folders works well among different windows
of Dolphin, but has problems when trying to perform the same action between
two panels in split view. To activate the bug you must change in someway the
content inside a folder and then try to C/P it somewhere. The workaround is to

Re: Questions about the "suite" muon on Kde Strectch.

2015-11-07 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello, I'm used to apt-get and aptitude, sometime I use synaptics so I
didn't extensively use Muon but I've tried it from time to time and it
looks like almost working on my Debian/Unstable. In my system it's able to
install packages and resolve dependencies while it doesn't seem to notify
the presence of updates/upgrades but perhaps it just needs some tweaks. Try
to launch muon and see if there is something missing in your installation
(very unlikely) or there is something in your permissions.

You can try to edit a small file un hplip following this indication

Where does plasma 5 store its configuration?

2015-09-11 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello. Today I've faced a problem with a widget and I needed to reset my
plasmashell configuration, but I've been puzzled by the fact that
configuration files seem have been moved from .kde to .config. in my home
directory. I would like to know if all the kde plasma 5 configuration is
now moved to .config and I can safely remove .kde because it's unnecessary.
Thanks

Bugged widget and how to remove it from your plasma configuration

2015-09-11 Thread Valerio Passini
Playing around with widgets can be fatal if you meet one that completely
eats your CPU. I've found that "dashboard launcher" is such that kind of
widget when I dragged it on my plasma 5 desktop. Has anyone faced the same
problem or is willing to try?
BTW I needed to kill the plasma session and to edit this file to remove the
widget:
./config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc, you need to scroll the
file until you find the lines referring to the widget and then remove them.
This way it's much more simple and cleaner than removing the whole file or
the whole directory as I was used to do.

Re: So I have a Plasma 5 desktop!

2015-07-10 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello, I found this misbehaviours:
1) it's impossible to add application launcher shortcuts on a panel using
dran 'n' drop, does anybody else have this problem?
2) browsing directories within an application when using settings doesn't
work: i.e.: while dolphin works, the directory browser does not because
directories are not shown.
3) many plasma widgets don't show at all when trying to select one to add
to desktop (weather widgets, system monitor, etc...)

Regarding hplip, on ubuntu 15.04 I had a similar problem, but I was able to
solve. I remember the solution involved to give an higher grace time to the
service

2015-07-09 22:13 GMT+02:00 David Baron d_ba...@012.net.il:

I am not on the inside so cannot tell anything. I did NOT use anything
 from
 experimental.

It is a bit slow (debug versions?), less than 100% stable, had some
 hangups.
 Growing pains.

Any word on when the rest of it will land in Sid? I have been holding off
packaging work because I didn't really want to use experimental.
I hope it is soon, I wont have time for Debian stuff once school
 restarts.

Go to system settings, somehow, and set the compositor to xrender. This
   got everything painted again.

Now of course, had to start over. Some pieces, widgets, are missing,
 even
   thought they were explicitly installed.

Icon themes have missing pieces, and size-related flaws.

But ... Plasma 5 is up and running and (mostly) quite nicely!

[Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#785517: [xfce4-session] Icons are installed in wrong places

2015-05-17 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: xfce4-session
Version: 4.12.1-3
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hi. My system has xfce4 and kde4 but xfce4-session icons are interfering with
those of kde4. To be more specific, those icons are:
system-hibernate.png
system-log-out.png
system-reboot.png
system-shutdown.png
system-suspend.png

and they are what it's displayed instead of the chosen icon theme. I think
they are misplaced inside:
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/
while it should be in
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/actions
like it's in every other icon set I've installed.

Best regards

Valerio

Well, I can't reproduce it here.

Was the file really just called Diff_index?

 I presume it was:
 ftp.it.debian.org_debian_dists_experimental_main_binary-amd64_Packages.Index
Diff which is the filename for this file:
 http://ftp.it.debian.org/debian/dists/experimental/main/binary-amd64/Package

There isn't much we can do about it at the moment. apt/stretch (not
jessie!) will know (most) filesizes in advance and check that it isn't
getting feed too much, but that is just preventing bad sympthoms to
appear (= full disk), it isn't a solution for the (unknown) initial
 problem.

Could be a misbehaving proxy (do you have one?), a misbehaving server,
your ISP (via a misbehaving proxy) or any classic man-in-the-middle
really. Hard to know without details. Can you even reproduce it?

I am not fully closing this bug as fixed in future version just yet
because I would like to understand what is going on here in case we can
do anything about it (further) to prevent this from happening, but I am
downgrading drastically as this isn't a new issue (= always possible in
all versions of apt), apt isn't made unusuable by it, we are not loosing
any data (well, with a fulldisk we potentially are, but that is the bug
of other tools not handling this case) and its not opening a security
hole. So neither of the reasons for 'grave' apply here and hence not
 release critical.

 Best regards

 David Kalnischkies

Hi David,

Thank you for taking care of the bug. You are right it's not always
reproducible, but it consistently happened to me and to understand the root of
this bug would be better for apt. After reporting this bug I removed that
mirror from my source.list and since then it disappeared. I'm trying to
reproduce it now (with no success).
The name I gave to you is correct. To be precise is:

ftp.it.debian.org_debian_dists_testing_contrib_binary-amd64_Packages.diff_Index

so I wrongly wrote the capital letters.
I fully understand why you are changing the bug priority, I supposed that in
the meantime someone else could confirm this bug, but it didn't happen so at
the moment it has affected just my system.
You are making good guesses about the root of this bug and apt could be not
the culprit, anyhow this open bug could be a good starting point for those who
meet similar problems. Best regards

Bug#762132: Is it only in Debian?

2015-01-04 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: fglrx-driver
Version: 1:14.12-1

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
I want to stress that this bug seems to be only in Debian.
Looking for information on linux+fglrx+invisible+cursor or
linux+amd+catalyst+invisible+cursor leads always to Debian and yields no
result on other distros.
BTW, my system is hybrid and the latest fglrx driver has been tested by me
to no avail with kdm, lighdm, xfce and kde, with and without HW
acceleration. The cursor is visible only when the Intel integrated gpu is
working as primary graphics card.

Bug#743293: [partitionmanager] partitionmanager crashes with 3TB usb 3.0 external drive

2014-04-01 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: partitionmanager
Version: 1.0.3-2
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
I was trying to run partitionmanager with my new external drive (WD My Book
3TB usb 3.0 NTFS formatted) already attached to USB 2.0 port (my laptop has
not any 3.0 USB port). The application was not running and silently crashing.
I removed the drive and the application just run without a problem, scanning
my internal sda properly. Then I connected the drive again and refreshed the
available device, and again partitionmanager crashed.
Tried it a couple of times, same result every time.
The same happens to gparted. I'm guessing if the problem is in libparted.

PROBLEM: boot takes more time with hp_accel driver

2014-03-03 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello,

I have met this problem a long ago (about at 3.8 kernel release) and never had
the time to dig it. The problem is that at boot time the system seems to hang
for a while (ranging from 20 to 50 seconds) and then it completes the boot
process.
bootchart2 points out that udev was taking a lot of time at boot
during the loading of hp_accel. Putting this driver and lis3lv02d from which
it depends into a blacklist turns the boot process back to normal (around 40
seconds). I don't need so much this driver, since I don't move around my
laptop while it's on, but I would like to help improving it because a fast
boot time is considered to be important for a good user experience. What do
you to solve this rather small problem? Bye

Valerio

Bug#735047: [fglrx-driver] use simlynks and uninstall vesa video driver

2014-02-26 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: fglrx-driver
Version: 1:14.1~beta1.3-1

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
hello,

I have had a lot of issues with hybrid graphics in the last two weeks because
there are a lot of bugs all together.
The first issue is empy /usr/lib/fglrx/igpu, you can try to:

sudo update-alternatives --set glx /usr/lib/mesa-diverted

to see if this solves the empty igpu directory problem.
The other issue is that X.org (remember to remove xorg.conf file) loads the
vesa driver instead of the intel GPU integrated graphic driver, so you don't
have hardware acceleration.
You need to remove xserver-xorg-video-vesa package until they fix the thing.
Hope it helps

Bug#720743: [firmware-brcm80211] doesn't crash stock unstable 3.10 kernel

2013-08-25 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: firmware-brcm80211
Version: 0.40

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

The crash doesn't happen with the 3.10 kernel in Sid/Unstable but there are
two important differences with my custom 3.10.0 kernel:

1) the version in Debian is actually 3.10.7 (should check if there is any
change in net/wireless/brcm80211)

2) differences in driver's options. In my system the notification LED is
enabled

Bug#720743: [firmware-brcm80211] doesn't crash stock unstable 3.10 kernel

2013-08-25 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: firmware-brcm80211
Version: 0.40

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

The crash doesn't happen with the 3.10 kernel in Sid/Unstable but there are
two important differences with my custom 3.10.0 kernel:

1) the version in Debian is actually 3.10.7 (should check if there is any
change in net/wireless/brcm80211)

2) differences in driver's options. In my system the notification LED is
enabled
through GPIO.
i.e.: BCMA_DRIVER_GPIO Y

The fact that this version of the firmware is not compatible with my older
kernel stll holds.

Bug#720743: [firmware-brcm80211] the firmware crashes kernel-3.10.9

2013-08-24 Thread Valerio Passini
Package: firmware-brcm80211
Version: 0.39~bpo70+1
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
The last firmware provided in unstable (should be 0.40) doesn't work with my
3.8.13 custom kernel, and what is worse, causes kernel opses in my custom
3.10.9 kernel locking it totally. Reverting to any previous version down to
the one present in wheezy at least allows to connect with kernel 3.8.13, but
all of them crashes the kernel 3.10.9.
Best regards

Valerio

[Sid] Bespin as default theme

2013-07-16 Thread Valerio Passini
Hello,

Is anyone else other than me experiencing that, doesn't matter what you
choose, the only theme you get in System-settings - Application appearance-
Style is Bespin? Have you noticed that Oxygen is missing?
Bye
