Hello,

I forgot, there was a set of free courses for GoldWave and Reaper by
CAVI,

very much out of date now but I mention them because getting started with
audio is not seeking a DAW. The lectures for both DAWS were the same to
start with. These lectures were on subjects such as; What is sound and
how

is it generated?
How does a microphone work and what are the different types of
microphone?

What kinds of cables are required for audio production?
What is an interface and which one do I need to get started?

These are basic principles that are very important and I'd suggest an
essential for getting into audio as it will save lots of head
scratching and

unnecessary waisted purchases.

I just tried using my browser book mark and it appears that the domain
has
been pulled. Which is sad as the SD card that I had them stored died a
few

years ago.

Hello.

The two programmes are not exactly equivalents. Reaper is much more
difficult to use, but it's also a more versatile programme that is a
fully
fledged multi-track recorder, editor, and you can even use it to drive
soft
synths and do midi. So it al depends on what it is you want to do.
Reaper is
more demanding and pretty  much assumes you have good audio hardware
right
out of the box. It works with aseo (sp) and Goldwave doesn't, but that
also

means, if you use a screen-reader, it's bestif it is on its own  audio
output in windows.
Goldwave is a great programme that can do all sorts of audio
processing --
one track at a time. It's not really made for music production. But it
can
still use vst effect plugins. I have used it for ages. Unfortunately I
have

had some trouble with the latest versions, first with a keyboard command
glitch (I consider it a problem because even though there's a solution
it's
not really documented anywhere I can see), and dictation mode, which I
use a

fair bit, not working. Still, you can get an older version if you want.
As for usability with a screen-reader, they both are, but you will
certainly
have to take some time to study up, read documentation and so on.
It'll be

more of a long haul with reaper for sure, so if you are just starting out
and not going to work with music production or midi stuff, I would think
goldwave would be an excellent tool. There's also audacity of course,
which

is kind of somewhere in between Goldwave and Reaper in terms of its'
abilities. It has a weird interface that I think isn't much like most daw
software, but that could actually be an advantage if you can't see the
screen and haven't used any other ones.

[all-audio] Seeking Recommendations For a Good Microphone With Speaker, Compatible With iPhone

2022-11-07 Thread David Goldfield
Hi. I'm seeking recommendations for a high-quality mic to be used with an
iPhone. Here's a description of what I'm looking for. This would be for someone
specifically using an iPhone to be used on a Teams call. This person would
be on the call at an exhibit hall at a convention. They would be doing this to
talk with vendors live on the call. If possible and practical, we'd also
want a portable speaker loud enough so that participants
on the call could ask questions to be heard by the person on the floor at the
convention. This would obviously need to be as portable as possible as the
meeting host with the iPhone would be moving about to speak with the various
vendors. Are there good quality mic/speaker combo units that can be used like
this? I'd be interested in any recommendations from those of you with
experience doing this.

Good morning Steward:
Yes, there's a simple way to do just that. Are you familiar with the audio
editor Audacity? I often refer to it as a word document in audio format,
because of the way you edit files with it. Just like Word, you have to
select text prior to deleting or changing it in any way. Audacity is free
and easy to use, and is very friendly with Jaws. You say the first 4 minutes
of your file is blank? No problem. With audacity, all you have to do, is
find the spot in the file where the audio starts, press the left bracket to
put a placemarker there, press shift J to select everything from the
placemarker back to the left, then press control K to delete the silence.

[all-audio] music for podcasts

2021-02-20 Thread David Mehler
Hello,

Quick question, does anyone who makes there own podcast use music for
it? If so where did you get the music? I'm looking for something I
know not what until I hear it, that I can use for intro and outtakes.
I'm needing something creative commons.

Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [all-audio] podcasting, any tips?

2021-02-16 Thread David Mehler
Hello,

Thanks. I can do a segment of just the background fan audio. It's a
standard box fan on the high setting if that helps.

I can do a segment, how long, and when I have just that segment what next?

Thanks.
Dave.

2021-02-15 Thread David Mehler
Hello,

Thanks for your reply. What I did with my first go was to make the
podcast then use goldwave's maximize volume option to get the volume
to zero db without clipping.

I have been reading, and listening to tutorials and presentations
since my first podcast and have learned about vst plugins, that's
where I wondered about a compressor. I've also got some background
noise that my phone microphone picks up. It's from another room about
ten feet maybe 15 feet away I'm actually surprised the mic got it, if
possible i'd like to filter that out.

Can you explain EQ?

Thanks.
Dave.

[all-audio] podcasting, any tips?

2021-02-15 Thread David Mehler
Hello,

I'm dipping in to podcasting. I've made and submitted one, but think I
could do better. The podcast is a demo which is recorded on my s10+
using amazing mp3 recorder, and demoing features of the phone so it's
also talking.

One thing I've noticed is sometimes the audio isn't right, it's either
to loud or not loud enough, I've maximized volume. I am using
goldwave6 with some added-vst-plugins for post-processing. The files
are recorded as wav files then saved as 44.1Khz 64Kbps mp3 files.

I thought about giving a compressor a go to make my voice crisper and
the phone volume more even as well, but don't want to smash things to
soundly.

I'd appreciate any tips.

Thanks.
Dave.

[all-audio] goldwave question, removing patterns of audio

2020-12-03 Thread David Mehler
Hello,

I've got a goldwave inquiry. I've got an audio track that is in a flac
format. It's got periodic music throughout mostly between sections of
audio. It's music and it's the same pattern throughout the file. What
i'd like to know is can I select said audio once the first time I hear
it and set goldwave to find all other occurrences of said audio and
remove it?

Thanks.
Dave.

Hi Tom,

To get to the Winamp disk writer plugin:

1. Launch Winamp and open the file you wish to convert.
2. Press v to stop it playing.
3. Press ctrl+p for Winamp preferences.
4. Up or down arrow to plugins. If it is closed, press right arrow to open it.
5. Down arrow to output.
6. Press tab twice. You will probably be on Nullsoft DirectSound Output.
7. Down arrow to Nullsoft Disk Writer and press enter.
8. Press x and the file will be converted to wav rather than playing. By
default, the converted file will be in your music folder under users and your
name with a number such as 01 at the start. This can be changed in the plugin
configuration.
9. Follow the steps above again to set the output plugin back to Nullsoft
DirectSound Output. Otherwise, files will continue to be copied rather than
played.

If you need any more detail, please let me know.

Barry Chapman

Barry: I did try converting the original M4A (which does play in Winamp) to
WAV just now; no soap! It won't play! But tell me about this Winamp Disk
Writer output and how I either "get to it" or install it or whatever I need to
do? As I said in an earlier reply, I don't claim to know a whole lot about
this kind of stuff; am trying to do a favor for a friend and am having no luck!
If it's as simple as using this Winamp Disk Writer to convert it to WAV; then
converting that Wav file to an MP3, then I should be able to do what I want to
do, which is to take the part of the file that my friend doesn't need away.
First, I need to know more about this Winamp Disk Writer Output plugin!

Thanks,

Hi Tom,

If the original plays in Winamp, have you tried converting it to Wav using the
Winamp Disk Writer output plugin. That works for me. You can then convert the
wav to mp3 with Switch.

Georgina: I wasn't trying to criticize you (or anyone) am just simply stating
what I have done so far! As for Error messages from Winamp, none; only thing
is, Winamp isn't playing the converted version of the file. Admittedly, I am
not as well-versed about these things as many who are on this list. However,
to me, it seemed like converting the file in qu4estion to MP3; then using MP3
Direct Cut (a program that I have had good luck with for a long time now)
seemed to be the way to go. But that's why I put this query here in hopes
someone could point me in the right direction! I will check the bit rate of
the convert file; for now, I have seen that the original file (non-converted)
is 53KPBS. So next, I will look at the converted file and see what that says!
Again...I'm not being critical of your assessments and apologize if I came off
that way! Am sure that you (along with others on this list) have a much better
understanding of these things than I do!

Hello Tom,

I was only trying to bring your attention to what it is you are doing and
attempting to do. I don’t know these utilities that are obviously been created
to simplify the process. You appear to be looking for a quick no fuss utility.

I cannot guess why your workflow didn’t work on this occasion. The only way you
would establish why the file became corrupted. Or maybe it didn’t maybe there
is something that has been done to the file that Winamp doesn’t like. Have you
tried another player? Have you looked at the file-size to see how it differs
from the original. There are so many things with what you are doing to the
files that could cause Winamp to refuse to play it. What do Winamp error
messages say.

Have you considered getting a copy of something like audacity and learning
that? It will be a lot easier with such a program than taking the easy way of
using these little utilities that mangle your files. But

[all-audio] olympus recorders

2020-05-16 Thread David Mehler
Hello,

I am still in the market for a new recorder. I did look at zooms but
I'm needing menu accessibility with my recorder, I'm not really
needing an app or anything like that I am just looking for a
standalone recorder.

What are opinions on current Olympus recorders?

Thanks.
Dave.

Hello,

With regards goldwave6, jfw 2020, and the scripts, has anyone noticed
that pressing a key such as left bracket or pause doesn't give
feedback such as where the start marker is, or the status of the
toggle?

Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [all-audio] Jfw, scripts, Goldwave6, and loud noise in audio

2020-04-30 Thread David Mehler
Hello,

It is kind of a personal nature.

What I can do is provide a sample of the noise that resides in the
file. I've tried everything I can to filter it out, drop the volume,
tried some band pass/stop, low and high pass, but i'm either not doing
it right, not the right settings, but I have reduced it, but in doing
so the underlying audio the stuff I'm trying to hear gets really tinny
sounding. Part of it is I did not make this and I think the person who
did it did not do well with it, they encoded at 22050KHZ I think but
it's slow, so that the full file is over 27 hours long, changing the
rate to 44100 makes it intelligible and drops the file length to just
over 13 hours.

Here's the link to the interference pattern I'm trying to eliminate.
Again I can use Goldwave, reaper, or audacity, if anyone has
suggestions i'm open to them.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/r8qba57lib1z0db/noise.wav?dl=0

Thanks.
Dave.

[all-audio] Jfw, scripts, Goldwave6, and loud noise in audio

2020-04-30 Thread David Mehler
Hello,

I'm using Goldwave6 with Jfw 2020 and it's scripts for same. I've got
a piece of audio that has a rather loud noise in it. I've captured a
sample of this noise not sure I got just the noise as it's very
audio-overwhelming and i'd like to filter it out. Right now I'm trying
to open the audio, then I'm going to save it as a flac file so I don't
damaage the mp3 file by repeatedly working on it, I get a lossless
file in the flac. I'm going to try to listen to just the left channel
and just the right channel, see if one is clear and/or if one has the
audio completely. This audio is just speech so any suggestions as to
how I can filter appreciated.

Note, I am not opposed to using other tools, I've got the latest
audacity on this machine as well as have got the free-for-time thanks
to kovid19, reaper. I've also got NVDA as a second screen reader.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [all-audio] Looping With Audacity

2019-09-27 Thread David Bailes
Hi Robbie,
you can delete some audio from the start or end of the audio as follows:
I'm assuming that the track is selected, which it is by default if you open or
import a file.
To delete at the start of the track:
1. Press spacebar to start playback.
2. Press X at the start time of the audio which you want to keep. Pressing X
stops playback and moves the cursor to that position. You can make fine
adjustments to the cursor position using left and right arrows.
3. Press Shift + J to set the start of the selection to the start of the audio.
4. Press delete.

To delete at the end of the track:
1. Press K to move the cursor to the end of the audio.
2. Press Comma a few times to move the cursor back to a few seconds before you
want to the audio to end.
3. Press spacebar to start playback.
4. Press X where you want the audio to end.
5 Press Shift + K to set the end of the selection.
6 Press delete.

There's a guide to Audacity 2.3.2 for users of screen readers available at this
address:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.3.2-Guide.html

Hi!
If you have an Apple Music account you have the apple music for android to

Works like a sharm here.

No it wouldn’t as the M4P files are digitally protected.
I’m wondering what do you want to convert these files for in the first
place? They play just fine with iTunes or your IOS devices right.

M4p files are protected and have long since been illuminated from iTunes
so

download the correct M4a versions and see how you get on.

[all-audio] Audacity 2.3.0

2018-10-01 Thread David Bailes
Audacity 2.3.0 has recently been released. One of its new features is punch and
roll recording, which enables you to easily correct mistakes immediately after
you've made them.
This is a link to the Windows installer:
https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html/audacity-win-2.3.0.exe

I've updated my Jaws guide to Audacity to cover this release, and it's
available here
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.3.0-Guide.html
Nearly all the guide is also applicable to users of NVDA and Window-Eyes.

Note that if you're using the Jaws script for Audacity, some parts of it don't
yet work with this latest version of Audacity.

David.
