[sc-issues] [Issue 33723] Ability to turn off Number Recognition for incomplete dates in Calc

There may be some users that prefer this behavior, but it should be optional, and preferably off by default. By the way, often ordinary numbers or texte + numbers is reformatted as dates when it doesn't even match any of the registered date formats. I've also encountered entries being unexpectedly converted to currency. (My locale is fr-CA.) e.g., if the calc date format is -mm-dd (using - as separator), entering 1.1.16 will be incorrectly formatted as the date 2001-01-16, even though it does not have the correct separators. Then changing the format to texte will result in some bizarre number, totally unrelated to what was entered. If someone wants a date format, they should be prepared to format the field as date before entering. Similar for currency. Or at least make this sort of behavior optional. If the solution is restricted to only dates, the problem is only partially solved -- a complete solution involves the same section of code. However, explicit directional embeddings or overrides could affect number presentations - remember, numbers are weak characters in the bidi algorithm. If you have a look at the section on resolving weak characters, the so called context setting comes into play in how Arabic Numbers and European Numbers are changed to fit the text run. The spec, however, allows implementations to reset numbers to be all Arabic or all European (Section 4.3). Open Office for windows so far has ignored the number formatting behaviour in the standard. With all due respect, I think there is no need to invent a new spec but to use the standard itself as the reference. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 101629] 3.1.0: 100% CPU usage wit h Duden Korrektor 5.0 extension
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=101629 --- Additional comments from m...@openoffice.org Fri May 8 13:05:33 + 2009 --- Just a general comment to Grammar Checking, maybe also as a reference for future discussions. GC is a very time consuming process and so it is absolutely normal that the Checker fetches a lot of CPU resources. How much that will be and how this influences the time other tasks will get depends on the machine and the implementation. OOo implements Grammar Checking as a real background task, means: a separate thread. If you have a multi core CPU, the Grammar Checker will take a full CPU until the checking finishes. So in case of a dual core CPU and OOo itself (or other apps) just idling while the GC works, you should get ~50% CPU usage. If OOo or another app is also busy, this can give up to 100% of course. But even the single core CPU case not necessarily must impose a problem on the user. Here GC will take up to 100% CPU, but as this work happens in a thread, the operating system will automatically give CPU time to other threads if required. So once you start typing in OOo, OOo will process the input as usual. Due to some synchronisation between the threads the performance will be slightly worse than without the active Grammar Checking thread, but OOo will never block and the performance won't be as bad as 100% CPU for GC might let you think. I have used Duden Korrektor on a Core 2 Duo Notebook and on a Pentium IV Notebook (single core), both with 2 GHz. On both machines I didn't see any performance problems. The P IV machine was slightly less responsive at times, but it was always bearable. Once the document has been checked completely, the CPU usage wasn't a problem anyway as only modified paragraphs are checked again. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I would say that a program that changes a number like '13.2' into a date and a postcode into a currency value must not just be enhanced but corrected... and by the way if this issue is corrected according to the interpretation of andr55, you can also close issue 87999 (marked as DEFECT). @egle what would Lithuanians type that they expect to be interpreted as their currency? same question regarding zip codes. would it be case sensitive? aren't there in Lithuania people who -like me- seldom use capital letters? exponential notation is something that makes me cautious: maybe in the solution to this series of bugs it would be best to offer switching on/off automatic interpretation of formatted data per format. maybe also offer adding/removing formats (I mean: list of formats has variable length) and allowing the user to specify the conversion rules. selecting national settings would activate the standard list of rules for that nation and no other (built in) rules would be applied. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Though we got the stream asynchronously before the SfxMedium is constructed, we now have a synchronous server access in SfxMedium::GetMedium_Impl() caused by GetInitFileDate(). For several reasons this is superfluous here, as we don't want to edit this file and we don't want to lock it. Besides that we are loading it from a web server, though this doesn't help us as it could be a webdav server also. So either we skip GetInitFileDate() here or we get the necessary information in the thread downloading the stream also so that we don't need to ask the web server for it. I wonder whether the SfxMedium is created readonly here. In case it is, I don't understand why we should call GetInitFileDate() at all. If it isn't, we should make it readonly here. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=101682 Issue #|101682 Summary|Linked sheet not updating from url on remote server Component|Spreadsheet Version|OOo 3.0.1 Platform|PC URL| OS/Version|Windows XP Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|DEFECT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|open-import Assigned to|spreadsheet Reported by|tasker --- Additional comments from tas...@openoffice.org Fri May 8 13:59:36 + 2009 --- This problem appears to be specific to OOo on Windows. Linux users in the community forum do not experience the same problem. I am trying to link a sheet to a tab delimited file accessed through the internet. I create an externally-linked sheet through 'Edit - Insert - Sheet from File' with the 'Link' box ticked. A browse window opens to select the file. I enter the url of the file in the form 'http://www.website.com/folder'file.xls' with filetype 'Text CSV(*.csv;*.txt;*.xls)'. The 'Text Import' window appears displaying data from the source file. I click OK and the 'Text Import' window closes, leaving the 'Insert Sheet' window. The linked file now shown in this window is located on my local hard drive in 'Documents and Settings/User/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE/F2UIVQCW/file.xls' ie it is a local copy of the file on the remote server. If I click OK on the 'Insert Sheet' window, the data from the source file appears correctly on the sheet. However, when the 'Update' function is invoked, either on reopening the file or through 'Edit - Links - Update' the data on the sheet is refreshed from the copy on the local drive and not from the source file on the remote server. The copy on the local drive is not synchronised with the original source file prior to the update function being performed. The only way I can force a true update is by clicking 'Modify' in the 'Edit Links' window and re-entering the url of the source file ie by recreating the link each time I want to update. Since this behavious does not occur under Linux, I assume it is a defect, rather than an enhancement. I appreciate I could use a program such as WGET to synchronise the local file with the source file outside OOo, but this should not be necessary. This type of linkage to an external text file is very straightforward in Excel. I will attach screenshots showing what I have described. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. We will extend the filter dialog with a preview, like in Calc where you always can see how the first few rows will look with the current settings. We will have a text engine in that dialog that displays the first few thousand characters of the document using the current settings. This will enable us to test the text in a sandbox. Even if the user presses OK though he just sees garbage, we can still run a detection over the previewed text and reject it in case it does not match our criteria. Once the text is in the Writer core it is close to impossible to handle all the problems that might appear deep inside the text formatting or the VCL text output caused by text garbage. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sc-issues] [Issue 98025] OO causes corruption in Ex cel files with combo boxes
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=98025 --- Additional comments from mos...@openoffice.org Fri May 8 15:45:47 + 2009 --- I seem to have hit this bug as well. 1. I started with an Excel 2003 .xls file which included combo boxes. 2. Made extensive modifications including deleting and duplicating sheets. 3. Saved it in OO format. 4. repeat steps 2 and 3 a few times 5. saved it in Excel 97/2000/XP format 6. Opened it in Excel 2003 which resulted in the error described with the same lack of formatting. To debug this I systematically deleted sheets and elements to narrow down where the issue lies. I found that the combo box was an issue. With that knowledge and Google I found this issue was open. My final test after reading this issue, was to start with the step 6 document and just delete out the combo boxes (there were about a dozen). Just that allowed excel to open it. I did an undo of one combobox delete, saved, and excel puked again. Definite confirmation. Unfortunately the nature of the data in this spreadsheet makes it impossible for me to share. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
