Ah, interesting that even MS-WordViewer has problems with the equation. However,
as long as it just squeezes the equation, the content is at least not lost. A
problem with OOo's treatment of the equation is that if you doubleclick the
equation, then it will be destroyed beyond repair. Quite interestingly, if one
transforms the Word document to ODT format, then OOo 2.3 (Windows) also squeezes
the equation like WordViewer BUT one can enlarge the object to its proper size.
Theis is for onknown reasons not possible within OOo 2.3 (Linux).

I agree that the problem is mostly on the MS side. My Word 2000 even suggested
via a wizard not to use MS-Equation 3 but some other equation editor (which I do
not have). If they only had relied on TeX for mathematical formulas!

The issue for OOo would be to decide whether or not to support equations like
the one in my test file. Word 2000 (and I guess other versions) can

Equation objects do not render well when imported from MS-WinWord to OOo 2.3.
The original document is created by WinWord-2000 using MS-Equation 3.0.

The problem apparently depends on the existence of the MS-Equation component: if
one opens the document on MS-Windows with OOo 2.3, then everything is just fine.
However, the rendering of the equation on OOo 2.3 under Linux (Ubuntu 7.10) is
almost unreadable.

Besides the rendering problems, there are a few more defects demonstrable with
the example Word file test-equation.doc (under Linux):

1- The size of the equation object cannot be changed under OOo 2.3 (Linux);
there is no such problem with OOo 2.3 (Windows)!

2- Opening the equation object (by double-click) and then closing the equation
editing window (ESC key) will change the equation completely; practically it
destroys it (both under Linux and Windows). Apparently, OpenOffice cannot
interpret the equation's internal representation). Converting the Word file to
ODT format does not help.

I agree that the document can be opened with OpenOffice 2.2 on some platforms
(incl. Windows XP). I only have problems opening it under Ubuntu 7.04 (AMD64).
So, it is platform-dependent.

OpenOffice 2.2 under Linux apparently cannot import SDA files, i.e. StarOffice
5.0 drawings.

My Linux configuration:

Ubuntu 7.0.4 (64bit)
OpenOffice 2.2.0 (as provided by Ubuntu)

When I doubleclick an SDA file (which I had created some years ago with
StarOffice 5.x), OpenOffice starts up but asks me to select a filter. I tried
all reasonable variants, but in all cases the system reports 'General Error.
General input/output error'.

When I try the same under Windows XP with OpenOffice 2.2.1, OpenOffice
flawlessly opens the file ans displays it.

I added an example SDA file. When I try to open the file with the File Open
dialog, it would present me a list 'Filter Selection'. I tried all reasonable
choices (to my knowledge reasonable). They all yield the general input/output
error.

The sample presentation text-move-bug.odp has two text objects. The one at the
buttom can be selected and ther will be a box displayed around it that allows to
move the text object around. The other one cannot be moved so easily since no
box bill be displayed around it when it is selected.

The un-movable text object was copied from an SXI presentation (Oo 1.1.4) which
in turn had been imported from PowerPoint 2000. The problem has been with
OpenOffice 1.1.4 as well.

Thanks! That works perfectly. Obviously, some text boxes from PowerPoint got

When one tries to insert a chart for a column of more than 10 values, then only
the first 10 items are displayed.

Autoformat will display all items only when switching to chart type Pies and
then back to the original chart type.

Steps for reproduction:

1) Create a column with more then 10 cells filled with numbers

2) Select the cells and invoke 'Insert - Chart ...'

3) Press 'Next' in the pop-up window of Autoformat Chart

== only the first 10 items are displayed

Switch to chart type Pies and back to the original chart type to circumvene
the bug.
