I acquired a new computer with an 1.9 MHz AMD triple core cpu and 4 Gb of
memory to recalculate a spreadsheet I attached previously. I wish I could send
the spreadsheets that are linked to it too, as the problem appears when it asks
if the links should be updated.
With the new computer, Windows 7, the symptom is different. When responding to
the question should the links be updated? the box with the question
disappears, the keyboard does not respond and after a while the program just
closes down. No error message, nothing. Next time you start it up it asks if
you want to recover. If you say yes to update links it repeats the same thing.
Links are never updated.

I am really desperate to know if there is a fix to this, else I have to look
for some different software. I have not been answered any of above problems and
feel left alone. I am certainly not very happy. My email is wmg...@gmail.com.
Please let me know how I can upload all linked files so you can see for
yourself. If you know there is a problem please at least let me know when you
may have a solution.
Kindest regards
Werner

After clicking on yes to update the spreadsheet which has links to 14 other
files, the pointer does not change to an hour glass. However the program
updates the spreadsheet (noticeable only by the eventual change of values in
the spreadsheet). The question box This file contains links to other files,
should they be updated, Yes/NO? does not disappear and it is not possible to
save. When pressing yes again (which still does respond), nothing happens.
Pressing yes again the box may disappear and the save button becomes available
to save (colour changes from gray to blue). On one occasion the program crashed
while doing this.

Pressing no on the question box (after you pressed yes and the update took
place as described above) fortunately makes the box disappear and the save
button turns blue for saving. Like that it is possible to work, but not
acceptable.
If possible in the next step I will attach the 15 files involved so you can see
for yourself. the main file is stored in c:\distribution
\dezentralised_distribution\werner, the 14 other files in the name of each
author.

Further to my report sent during the startup of the program I like to attach
two files in order to see for yourself. The first file contains all the
formulas. Caution, if you ask it to be updated during startup it will screw up
and you can't use it any longer! The other file is the result of that,
answering yes during startup, to update links. You first get a JRE defective
message. After aknowledging that error for 66 times it will let you onto the
spreadsheet. When you scroll down it will stop working and after a while give a
runtime error. Try it with the second file I attached herewith.
Hope you can help me. I am struggling with this program for a couple of weeks
now. I am not getting very far. I found out that I can use linking rather than
refering to cells in other spreadsheets. That seems to work better. There are
other issues, however I don't want to report with this message.
Kindest regards
Werner

Thanks for responding so fast, I am really in the dumps. Things worked fine for
some time and I trace it down to the fact that I use spaces between names of
folders (directories). However it still crashes and I noticed that an
apostrophe in my sheet names is causing problems with find and replace. It does
not work but comes to a runtime error. I attach the spreadsheet involved for
you to try. I do for example a find $'Book Nook' and ask it to replace it with
$'Bosun's Locker'. It will crash. However even with sheet names that have
spaces only, it will crash. Not during the find and replace but when you like
to save. Sometimes when you do the next find and replace.
I am now changing all folder names and sheet names to not have spaces nor
apostrophe (folder names never had apostrophe) and start new. I am in a time
crunch and need to work around the problem. Hope my assumption proofs right.

I have a spreadsheet with about 100 sheets, all empty. I set up 120 cells to
calculate from 14 other spreadsheets. I set up the first sheet of the 100
sheets. All works fine. I save it. I copy the this sheet to the next one of the
100 and save and exit. I load the program again and do a find and replace on
the new sheet just created to change formulas to reflect new sheets in the 14
external spreadsheets. All works fine. However, if I do not save and exit in
between the program crashes and exits on its own, no message but very
frustrating.

When I call up the spreadsheet it asks if I want to recalc. I say yes. It does
so for some time and shows the new values. All is there. I move the pointer to
press save. After a while I get a runtime error and after pressing the only
option OK it exits the program. When I call the spreadsheet up again and do
not a recalc (as it would crash again) the sheets are all recalculated and
fine. However I can not work like this. I want to enter 98 more sheets.

There is also problems with folder names having spaces. The spreadsheet can not
deal with it properly. At first it worked fine but as I added more formulas
that involved cells from other folders/spreadsheets the crashes occured every
time. Does that also apply to sheet names, I wonder?

I have a spread sheet that is adding up about 93 sheets each from 14 files.
When I start the file it tells me that it is linked to others and if I want to
calculate it. I say yes. It does the calculation and shows the proper values,
but the screen is frozen. As soon as I click to save or like to scroll the
screen it gives me the message
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\program\soffice.bin

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information
OK
When I click the OK it crashes, closes down. When starting the program again it
likes to restore the file.
Eventually it asks if I want to calculate it. If I say no the sheet is shown
with the proper values and I can work again.
If I say yes the above repeats consistently.

Please Make sure that the help screen does mention that you need to use the +
function if you need a sum over more than 30 sheets!! It is very frustrating to
use the sum function and to find out that all is gone next time you load the
spreadsheet.
Thanks you for an otherwise very great program

I want to use the Sum command to add one field (in the same location on the
sheet for all sheets) on lets say 52 sheets. I put the cell with the result on
sheet 53. That works fine and I save the document. Next time I call up the
document and the value in the cell on sheet 53 is now #N/A. The formula which
was in there and was saved is gone! This is the formula:

=SUM('32 Books'.G24;Armchair.G24;'Bacchus '.G24;'Beryls
Sorrento'.G24;Blackberry.G24;Blackbond.G24;'Blue
Heron'.G24;Bookingham.G24;'Bookland Kamloops'.G24;'Bookland Vernon'.G24;'Book
Nook'.G24;'Bosun''s Locker'.G24;'Cafe
'.G24;Cash.G24;C_Burnaby.G24;C_Coquitlam.G24;'C_Granville_St.'.G24;C_Kamloops.G24;C_Kelowna.G24;C_Langley.G24;C_Richmond.G24;C_Surrey.G24;C_Victoria.G24;Coho.G24;'Curious

Crow''s Nest'.G24;The_Good_Planet.G24;'United Library'.G24;'The Travel
Bug'.G24;'Volume One'.G24;Wanderlust.G24;'Wild Heather'.G24)

I tried to find the problem and narrowed it down to the fact that if I have
more than 28 cell references it will not work anymore (it will work as long as
you don't reload the saved spreadsheet). So I did 3 sums each with less than 28
cell references, add them togeter and it works. It also works iif you just use
the + function. However I did use the Sum function and became quite frustrated.
It would be nice for other users to know about this. I could not find anything
in the FAQ list or bug reports so I like to report it here. And I feel the SUM
function should not be limited to a certain number of cell references.
Take care
Werner Gysi
