I completely understand the complexity and difficulty of the problem. It seems
no
one working on this issue. :)

I think your idea can help to determine the language of the unified CJK missing
characters more accurately. That's great. The language of the characters in the
blocks (such as U+3400..U+4DBF) you mensioned can not be known only from the
value of the code point, though they are more biased to be comprised in a
Chinese document. :) Thank you.

@hdu: I'm not sure if there is a node for certain language to match with
LANGUAGE_DEFAULT_CJK in vcl.xcu. if no such a node available, none font could
be
hit when the missing characters is in the range mapped back to
LANGUAGE_DEFAULT_CJK. Actually, Few font can cover all the characters of CJK
which are so many that uses the most part of Unicode encoding space. :)

As known well, there is not a accurate map from language to the block of
Unicode
encoding space. So the map I composed is just to meet the requirement of font
fallback in OOo in accordance of the config file vcl.xcu.

I have made a little change. Please see the attachment I just submitted.

Yes, it's not a serious problem for Latin script because most fonts contain the
glyphs of Latin character. So font fallback would not be heavily depend on to
display Latin character. But it's not so fortunate for other script because most
fonts are available only for a single script except Latin. So font fallback is
really significant for other script. It's not a good idea to expect users always
select the right font to display the text. Anyway, it should calculate the text
height depending on the actually used font.

Thank you for your explanation of my point.
It's a UX design problem essentially. From my viewpoint, I prefer actually-used
font to request font in the edit-field of the font-selection box. On the
other hand, it's incorrect to depend on the request font but not the
actually-used font for text height calculation. Please refer to the issue
107030 I filed.

Please submit a new issue for your last problem. It is not good to mix several
problems into one issue. Thanks in advance.

No problem, I will file another issue for the last problem. But I think the two
problem are introduced by the same root cause. So don't ignore the other while
fixing this one.

Moving the caret into the text which is displayed by the fallback font, the
family name of the fallback font will not be selected in the font list box.
Please refer to the graphic in my attachment. The font used to diaplay the text
should be consistent with the one in the list box as the behavior of MS office.
It's time to re-consider the font setting during text formatting. Please refer

Line size calculation is very important for text formatting. The glyph is not
allowed to extend outside the size of the line in order to avoid conflict
between two lines.

For the individual problem I showed in the attachment, the root cause is that
fallback font is used to display the glyphs while original selected font is used
to calculate the height of the clipping area. That could be proved by debugging.
And it's also confirmed by a simple experiment. When selecting a right font for
the Devanagari character, the chracters can be represented correctly. But when
another font is selected, the problem occured.

My proposal solution is to re-implement the calculation of height of line in
consideration of fallback font. I think the best way is to calculate the width
and height of line at the same time after calling OutputDevice::ImplLayout(...).
That means merging OutputDevice::GetTextHeight with OutputDevice::GetTextWidth.
The current implementation ofOutputDevice::GetTextHeight is really too naive.
:)

The problem was found from a defect associated with Devanagari text output.
Please see the screenshot included in the attachment, the bottom part of a glyph
is gone. It is caused by a fatal mistake during calculating text height which
always be got by the matrix data of the font selected in advance. If the
selected font can display the characters correctly, every thing is OK. When the
selected font is unable to contain all the characters, a fallback font would be
used to display the characters, but unfortunately, the text height is still
calculated by the original selected font. It's very hard to fix the problem
because of the process of text formatting in sw module. Please refer to the
implementation of the function OutputDevice::GetTextHeight(). What's important
is that sw doesn't know the fallback font when calculating text height.

I think sd and sc have the same problem too. It would be particularly
significant for the quality of text format to fix the problem. A reasonable
solution is to calculate the width and height of the text at same time after
calling function OutputDevice::ImplLayout(...). Anyway, the change of the text
format would not be avoidable, so need the input from sw, sd even sc.

@hdu: The latest implementation totally changed the way of font fallback under
windows. It really works well and be integrated into code stream of symphony
development. In most scenarios, the best fontface could be got from the fallback
algorithm. What's more, the font fallback algorithm can be refined by update the
font configuration file vcl.xcu. Performance also can be benefited from the new
implementation. Would you please take a look the patch I just deliverd? Thanks.

@hdu: In consideration of performance and text output quality, I designed a 2-
level font fallback algorithm for windows platform based on the implementation
before. Pseudo-code below gives a great simple description:

input: missing string
output: font face

//First level fall back, be fast and cover most cases
determine the language of missing string
get UI default font face df with language type of missing string

if df contains the characters of missing string
  return df;

//second level fall back, slow but only a few cases need
for each fontface in ImplDevFontList {
if fontface contains the missing string
return fontface;
else
next;
}

The advantages of the above algorithm is,

1. 1st level fall back is quick, and a approriciate font can be got for the
missing characters in most circumstances.

2. Though 2nd level fall back seems awkward and stupid, but useful in a very
few
circumenstances. For example, some non-bmp Chinese characters can be presented
in controls with 2nd level fallback.

several experiments show it really work well. I will submit a patch after the
implementation being refined.

Hi Eike,
Actually, the OOo locale data in xml files offer various patterns, for example,
DD/MM/YY for date text or HH:MM:SS for time text, which can get by OOo APIs
easily. These patterns could be used as parameters by icu to output formatted
text in accordance with given locale. And I think this solution would not lost
more fine grained format or pattern control of OOo. Now our work begins with
replacing date/time formatting with icu.:)
I will creat a CWS as soon as possible.
Thanks.

The newest ICU 4.2 includes data from CLDR 1.7 and supports 468 locales. So I
think most locales that OOo supports would be covered by ICU. OOo could provide
a unified way to supported a new locales by means of ICU. So far adding a new
locale to OOo seems a little confusing and complex.:) Anyway, the locales which
not covered in ICU could be support by patching to ICU. So merging ICU data and
OOo data is really meaningful for refining i18n framework of OOo.

OpenOffice.org is a leading open-source office software suite which is
available
in many languages and works on all common computers. Some of the features
related to locales, such as character collation and text boundary analysis are
implemented by means of ICU (International Components for Unicode) but others
are not, including lacale data formatting and class of string. ICU is a mature
and widely portable set of C/C++ and Java libraries providing consistent
Unicode
and Globalization support for software applications on all platforms. In order
to provide a language experience with same result for our users acrossing
different platform, it would make sense of improving usability to re-implement
locale data formatting and class of string with APIs of ICU. And it will be
never nessarary of maintaining the language, contry, and cultural specific data
which is defined in XML format so far. Meanwhile, OpenOffice.org will
potentially support new features and new languages with the upgrade of ICU.

My implementation is the simplest solution which only focus on resolving missing
codepoints. A better font match algorithm in accordance of style really makes
sense of text output quality. Maybe a windows-specific font managing library
simiar to fontconfig should be developed, but it would cost a large amount of
efforts. :)

@hdu: I submitted a new implementation which traverses WinFontData objects by
using ImplDevFontList directly as your suggestions. And before read CMAP table,
ImplWinFontData::GetImplFontCharMap is used to test if CMAP data is available.
It works much better. Thank you. And now I don't think performance is still a
concern. Maybe sometimes it likes that a river passes a small stone for user
experience. Would you please take a look again?

@hdu: Many thanks for your suggestions.

I use UpdateFromHDC() just for getting CMAP data. I think the function
ReadCmapTable() may be more appropriate to do the same job, but it's a private
member function of class ImplWinFontData, so can't be accessed from external
calling. Anyway it's a good idea to test if ImplWinFontData object know the CAMP
before reading it.

@hdu: I have just implemented dynamic glyph fallback with another way by
traversing each ImplWinFontData item in ImplDevFontList as your suggestion.
ImplDevFontList indeed contains ImplWinFontData item, but unfortunately there's
no ImplFontCharMap cached in each ImplWinFontData. Would you please take a look
the patch I submitted and give me more suggestions again? Thanks.

@hdu: Many thanks to your suggestions.

For your point 2 and 3, I will try another way to implement the function
WinGlyphFallbackSubstitution::FindFontSubstitute by traversing ImplDevFontList
as you suggested.

As your point 4, 5 and 6, There is really a lot of work to enable the text
output ever smarter with the dynamic font fallback. I think the goal is much
clear: represent text with the most appropriate font hosted by the operating
system.

yanminjia-hdu: Many thanks for your suggestion. I implemented a class
WinGlyphFallbackSubstitution in vcl/win/source/gdi/salgdi3.cxx. It can work
indeed. Please see the picture I submitted. Maybe it's the first time that
non-bmp Chinese characters represent in OO dialog correctly on windows.:) But
the performance is impacted as expected. The source code snippet is just a naive
experiment. Would you please take a look and give me more suggestions? Thank

I have tried to implement a class WinGlyphFallbackSubstitution inheriting from
ImplGlyphFallbackFontSubstitution in vcl/win/source/gdi/salgdi3.cxx as the class
FcGlyphFallbackSubstitution using fontconfig on linux platform. And the Windows
API EnumFontFamiliesExW was used to enumerate fonts in Windows system. But the
work was blocked because I failed to find a win API to determine if the missing
characters contained by a specified font on. So I'm not sure if this feature
could be add on?

how to overcome the difficulties caused by the historical reasons: the former

Under windows system, OOo only uses a static font list (pls refer to function
ImplDevFontList::InitGenericFallback in vcl/source/gdi/outdev3.cxx) for glyph
fallback. Evidently, it's impossible that the static font list contains all the
fonts included in all the user's windows system. So in some circumstances, the
missing characters cann't match a right font even the system has that font. For
example, non-bmp Chinese characters can not present in a dialog box even there
is a font in the system that contains those characters.

Suggestion: improve the glyph fallback mechanism and support dynamic glyph
fallback, as done in linux leveraging fontconfig, develop a class
WinGlyphFallbackSubstitution inherited ImplGlyphFallbackFontSubstitution.

When would a CWS be generated for this issue. I think this enhancement could
help decrease many text representation complaints from users. In addition, a
large improvement has been made on Linux by leveraging fontconfig lib.

Making clear the what's cause of the defect would be very helpful to fix it. As
mensioned in one my previous comment, the difference between Windows and Linux
is,

On windows, the bidi text is seperated into runs each of which contains only
single language characters before being reordered by uniscribe bidi algorithm.
That why no problem is on windows.

On Linux, the whole multilingual bidi text is delivered to icu with the
parameter UBIDI_DEFAULT_LTR, so the initial direction or paragraph is determined
by the first character with bidi-strong character. Unfortunately, the editfield
in English UI should use LTR as paragraph direction to layout text.

So the paragraph direction of bidi text in editfield should depend on the
attribution mnTextLayoutMode in class OutputDevice. But the LayoutMode
TEXT_LAYOUT_BIDI_LTR seems be ignored or mixed with TEXT_LAYOUT_DEFAULT because
they have same binary value. What's more, there is no value of mnFlags in class
ImplLayoutArgs responding to LayoutMode TEXT_LAYOUT_BIDI_LTR.

Solution: make difference between LayoutModes TEXT_LAYOUT_BIDI_LTR and
TEXT_LAYOUT_DEFAULT defined in vcl/inc/outdev.hxx at first; and then set mnFlags
according to mnTextLayoutMode; finally assign the nLevel with correct value
according to mnFlags in
vcl/source/gdi/sallayout.cxx::ImplLayoutArgs::ImplLayoutArgs(...).

On windows, the Arabic character is always at the left of English letters in
editfield because the dialog direction is left-to-right with English UI, no
matter the bidi text in sw is left-to-right or right-to-left. I think that is
the correct behavior. On windows, before reseting the visual order by
bidi-algrithm, Unscribe divides a sequence of bidi chracters into runs each of
which only contains characters in single language. However, on linux, icu
bidi-algrithm reorders the sequence of characters as a whole without
considering the GUI direction by the parameter UBIDI_DEFAULT_LTR.

Hi hdu,
The reason you describe is right. But for the example in my attachment, the
editfield should use LTR direction to layout bidi text in English UI. On windows
platform, OOo use uniscribe process bidi text, and the visual order in editfield
is consistent with the case in writer in default.

Thanks.

Open a dialog such as Find and Replace from menu Edit-Find Replace. Then
Type some Arabic character with a few English letters following up in search
for box. The English letters at the left of the Arabic characters incrrectly,
which is not consitent when copy the input text to the writer doument.

This defect only occurs on Linux platform.

Maybe fixing the defect need to modify the source code:
 vcl/source/gdi/sallayout.cxx: ImplLayoutArgs::ImplLayoutArgs(..)

I'm not sure how to submit my update to community. Any suggestion would be
wecome. Thanks.

I have connected to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with ssh, but the server answered with
Permission denied when I entered the password. I tried serval times, it just
can't work. Perhaps I forgot the passphrase which I used to generate the ssh
key. So sorry. I had to generate a new ssh key and attached it to this issue
again. The file name is id_dsa.pub. thanks
