On starting openoffice:
$ openoffice
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
  what():  std::bad_alloc
$

I have no idea what's causing this problem. No log entries are written.

I used lsof to find all open files and then reinstalled the packages containing
those files:
