Thanks for the diagnosis.

I imagine this is a common scenario; a Linux user
is frustrated that his distribution doesn't have
the latest OpenOffice, so he downloads one directly
from OpenOffice.org.

I suppose a version check on the file might add to
user happiness, but if the problem's really going to
go away on its own, fine.

By the way, one can delete .../user/uno_packages completely. It will be
automatically recreated but all extensions are deleted as well.

The reason is that you used in the past an OOo which you got from another site
than www.openofffice.org. The vanilla build (www.openoffice.org) uses an older
version of berkeley db which cannot read the .db files created by a newer db
engine. You have possibly run an OOo with a newer db engine, that created
user/uno_packages/caches/uno_packages.db.

OOo3.2 is planned to have the current version of Berkeley DB which is also used
with many other builds. Then this problem should not occur anymore.

ab->jl: This really seems to be ExtensionManager related in the first place.
Please have a look.

Having what appears to be same problem w/ 3.1 in Jaunty. Would not run under
GNOME or KDE 4, but WOULD run under LXDE.

Was able to run under GNOME useing "open as Administrator" context menu on the
desktop icon. Appears to be an access issue.

cd->ab: This looks very similar to a problem we investigated for OOo 3.0. The
problem there was related to the copying process for the user configuration.

MRU->CD: could you please have a look? The attached config causes a crash when
trying to create any new document. I tested this with OO 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1 and
300m48 on Linux. Maybe it deals with the Extension manager; after launching OOo
it was NOT possible to open the extension manager (just nothing happened).
The crash report stated the following:
dp_manager::PackageManagerImpl::create(com::sun::star::uno::Reference const&,
rtl::OUString const&)
/so/ws/OOO310/ooo/desktop/source/deployment/manager/dp_manager.cxx:343

I've attached the .openoffice.org directory that led to
the crash. Note that OOO 3.0 didn't have any problems
with this directory! I think this is still a real problem.
