I confirm this is still happening in 2.4.1 (under Ubuntu 8.04). However I noted
that the saved word document only failed if the imported image is above a
certain size. I'm attaching two files to show this. The first contains an
imported image from a 5 megapixel camera. The second is the same image reduced
in size by 50%. If you save the second to a word file then it all works fine.
Most users however will probably just import the photo straight from their album
and will get the fail.

Created an attachment (id=55645)
This is the file originally posted but with the image resized down 50%. When 
saved to office xp and reloaded it works. The original one still fails.
