There is a very helpful suggestion made regarding the issue in the first mention of the bug. Superscript footnotes that are inserted by Insert| Footnote should not allow continued superscript styling. If, at any time, I hit backspace on a line of text until the cursor is flush with the endnote superscripted number, then all the future text I type becomes superscript. And, curiously, when clicking on the superscripted text, Writer detects it as Default text.
