@cmc: Would it be OK for you to directly copy the attached AutoSaveRecovery.xcu
(which I think contains a typo---the property name should be Enabled instead
of AutoSave) to directory
.../openoffice.org/basis3.0/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/Office/Recovery/
(the Recovery segment has to be mkdir'ed) instead of using configimport? If
yes, I would like to completely drop configimport for OOo 3.0.

(That the copy to share/registry/modules does work can be observed with a simple
Basic script. Starting OOo after copying the file,

Sub Main
pro = createunoservice(com.sun.star.configuration.ConfigurationProvider)
dim arg(0)
arg(0) = createunostruct(com.sun.star.beans.NamedValue)
arg(0).Name = nodepath
arg(0).Value = org.openoffice.Office.Recovery/AutoSave
acc =
pro.createInstanceWithArguments(com.sun.star.configuration.ConfigurationAccess,
arg)
print(acc.getByHierarchicalName(TimeIntervall))
End Sub

will print 5 instead of the default 15.)

yeah, those work, here's another one though for reference that I haven't figured
out quite yet how to handle without configimport. e.g. to override an
InternalPaths value

@cmc: The problem with the attached libtextcat.xcu (assuming you want to
replace $(insturl)/share/fingerprint from Paths.xcu with
file:///usr/share/libtextcat, not have both) is that Fingerprint is already
mandatory in the Paths.xcu, so the replace is effectively ignored. What works
is to explicitly remove the old value and add the new one:

  node oor:name=Fingerprint
   node oor:name=InternalPaths
node oor:name=$(insturl)/share/fingerprint oor:op=remove/
node oor:name=file:///usr/share/libtextcat oor:op=fuse/
   /node
  /node

aha!, I don't think I'd have puzzled that out. So all my use-cases can be
achieved without using configimport.

So, configimport seems to be one of the things I wanted to get identified via
http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=devmsgNo=19840. Never having
used it myself, question is: How do we want to handle it? Is it an application
intended to be called by end users (in which case it should be moved to the
brand layer, on the principle that all end user facing entry points to OOo are
in the brand layer program directory)? Is it an application intended to be
called only by maintenance staff or from other programs (in which case it could
be left in the basis layer)? Or is it an obsolete application not intended to
be called at all (in which case it should be removed)?

For myself, all I want to do is to easily tweak system-wide configuration keys
on the command-line. My use of it is basically that of a system-administrator
who wants to e.g. turn on or off the default values for all users. I have no
specific need for configimport if there exists an alternative mechanism.
