This is the OSS driver (audio).  Put the line
audio
into the file /etc/hotplug/blacklist to prevent it from loading (or
deactivate it in the kernel config).

This made no difference. I completely disabled hotplug and loaded the 
modules manually. First the usb controller module, and then the

WHen the unit is plugged in, it doesn't even appear in /proc/asound, 
although snd-usb-audio is loaded. I tried it with and without hotplug.

Oops, that's sad: I thought, this was almost the same device as the
other Maya's which worked out of the box,
