I am using 2.6.18 (debian stock kernel) and the appropiate modules are

 working.

Each notebook wires its sound connectors differently.

Please tell us which notebook you have, and show the contents of

When i try to play midi files with e.g. pmidi i can't here anything.

The wavetable synthesizer of this chip isn't supported by ALSA.
You have to use a software synthesizer like Timidity.

do you get the same effect of the built-in speakers sound dying and

  a little bit ;)
my speakers work after the first reboot after purging alsa-utils and
alsa-base. but after the second they don't give a sound anymore.

have you already tried aplay? on my maschine it always works, even if
all other alsa applications don't want to start.

i know, the results of my problem differ a little bit from yours. but in
my opinion, the solution should be the same.

On machine, all apps start without problem, I can see them playing. I
just don't hear them. How do I purge alsa-utils and alsa-base? And
  what does that mean?
  # aptitude purge alsa-utils alsa-base

this means that config files will be removed, too.
Purge did not do anything for me. Built-in speakers are still not
working. I think this is also a BIOS issue in my notebook.

When playing sound, I hear occasional crackling from my speakers; like a
popping sound. The strange thing is that it ran fine at first with
Ubuntu dapper (2.6.15 kernel) and after an upgrade to edgy (2.6.17)
things are this weird. The thing that worries is me is that when I boot
with dapper, things are still weird. Could it be that my sound chip is
in some inconsistent state, or should I start fearing that my hardware
  is failing?
no, i think it is just the codec...

Just to make sure, I think I will have to install windows ... :-S

Any results, yet?

Well, the crackling went away again and I can use my speakers again. I
think it happens when I try to use programs still using OSS instead of
ALSA. One such example is cedega. I am not sure however, and I think a
bios update would do a lot of good in this field.

[Alsa-user] click click click

2006-10-24 Thread Geoff Beasley
using 3 c-port cards (ice1712) with pcm_multi and netjack i get click after
click after click. i can't get any response from torben as to weather his
soft should work or not with pcm_multi...maybe he's on holidays. anyone here
shed some light on this ? any tools to find where these could be coming from
and why ? the network is a gigabit intel and seem to be working fine. could
the cards themselves be slipping out of sync somehow or dropping samples
somewhere.how to test ? i've tried jumbo packets and the like but to no
avail. there's also some light distorion on occasions too; but that comes and
goes.

using spdif to sync, under alsa 1.0.13, jack 102.20 on a 2.6.18.1-rt7 amd
athlon64 running 32-bit gentoo. the host will sit there all day without
clicking, only when i use netjack (which was the whole point of the
excercise) do i get the clicks.

thanks for any suggestions,

best,

g.
