Re: [Alsa-user] Do must Linux users just live without sound?

2009-06-11 Thread Daren Krive
Hi everyone,

I have found this discussion quite interesting and informative. However
(and I don’t mean to sound negative) but I am **really** hoping someone can
help me out with my particular case:

1) Sound DOES work for the first few minutes after rebooting particularly if
I have not run Linux for a while (either computer has been off or booted
under Windows).

2) Support for my particular laptop (the LG S1) is mentioned specifically in
the ALSA changelog way back in 1.0.12

Is anyone able to help me with my particular case? I have posted the output
from the alsa-info.sh script here:

http://www. goog_1244726256041alsa goog_1244726256041
-project.org/db/?f=9e5b4548ded9b389661b0e669ecb5cd7364ff973

Please let me know what other information else might be needed as well as
how I might be able to get that info (if I need to download a script, run a
specific terminal command, etc).

Thanks very much,

Daren Krive

Yes, this seems to be the case with some vendor drivers. And ALSA now
supports setting HDA pin configs from userspace so this info along
with trial and error can be used to get sound working, then report the
info back to ALSA developers so it can be made to work OOTB.

I am running the latest version of Ubuntu 9.04 - so whatever version of Alsa
comes with that I have already run the script you mention. The output
is here:

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=9e5b4548ded9b389661b0e669ecb5cd7364ff973

I have a Realtek ALC883 soundcard.

What happens is that if I haven't run Ubuntu for a while (several hours) and
I reboot into Linux I get sound for a few minutes. The sound soon has
static in it and then slowly gets more static and quieter at the same time.
by the time it becomes too quiet to hear it is all but static. At that
point it continues to work using the headphone jacks.

Weird eh?

I have two laptops running Linux over the years, and sound has varied
a lot as I upgraded and updated the distro. It works with some kernel
versions, doesn't work with some kernel versions, with some of them it
works but the sound is distorted, and with some of them output works
 but recording does not.

Every time I ask the question i get pointed to the same 6 URL's that

I am really starting to wonder if getting sound to work is a pipe

Intel HDA seems to be particularly awkward. It's the one I've had
most problems with - so many different behaviours with each kernel
 version, as described above.

I understand that Intel HDA hardware is wired up in lots of different
ways in different laptops, unfortunately, so there needs to be some
special code for many laptops in addition to the HDA driver.

But that doesn't explain why new kernels every few months behave so
differently on my Intel HDA laptop.

Hopefully someone will produce laptops that use standard-ish USB sound
internally sometime, like they already do with Bluetooth, Wifi and
 memory card readers.

Certainly I'll be testing my next laptop with distro CDs before buying
it, if the next one comes with Intel HDA. In theory HDA is a good
idea but it's a mess in practice.

 Hi everyone,

Sorry in advance if this type of question does not belong on this list. I
 am new to this.

I have never been able to get sound working properly on my laptop under *
any* Linux distro. I have the LG S1 (model QB01A9). The sound works fine
on the headphone jack but not on the internal speakers. I have read tonnes
of suggestions with similar problems but none of the suggestions has worked
for me. I have an hda-intel sound card.

After much digging I think I am finally on to something. I found on the
alsa-project.org site that support for the LG S1 laptop was added between
versions 1.0.11 and 1.0.12. You can see the change log here:

 http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Changes_v1.0.11_v1.0.12

Ubuntu 8.10 has Alsa 1.0.17 so presumably this problem has been resolved.
The change log (only says *Add support for LG S1 laptop* and then later
A*dded the model entry for LG S1 laptop*. This fills me with hope but
no where (that I can see) does it say what that model entry is. I know that
this has to go into my alsa-base file but what is the model entry to use?

Perhaps I am not reading the change log correctly? Can someone help me out
here? Perhaps I can email one of the developers?

So close and yet so far

Does anyone have any idea about how to get sound working on the LGS1
notebook? When I first boot it works for a few minutes but then quickly
disappears (although it continues to work through the headphone jack).

Sometimes it lasts longer then others. I am certain there must be something
else that is loading and causing some kind of conflict. I found the
information below a long time ago.

Any advice on how I can resolve this or what other information I can provide
would be a great help. I find it encouraging that the ALSA change log for

particular laptop.

versions 1.0.11 and 1.0.12. You can see the change log here:

http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Changes_v1.0.11_v1.0.12

Ubuntu 8.10 has Alsa 1.0.17 so presumably this problem has been resolved.
The change log (only says *Add support for LG S1 laptop* and then later A
*dded the model entry for LG S1 laptop*. This fills me with hope but no
where (that I can see) does it say what that model entry is. I know that
this has to go into my alsa-base file but what is the model entry to use?

Perhaps I am not reading the change log correctly? Can someone help me out
here? Perhaps I can email one of the developers?

So close and yet so far

Best regards,
Daren Krive
