David, afaik the disconnect option never got implemented on linux. You
might want to get a confirmation from the list though (CCed).

Congrats David! About twenty years ago I was getting the HDSP+Multiface

PCMCIA card. Your efforts reminded me of these days.

[Alsa-user] (sys)default? usbstream plugin?

2020-04-29 Thread Peter P.
Hi list,

I am trying to understand why is there a 'default' PCM device and a
'sysdefault' PCM device on my Debian system? Furthermore, the
libasound2-plugins package installs a usbstream plugin but I can't seem
to find out what it does or why it is needed in the first place.

Thanks for all pointers about these two questions!

I am replying to my last thread here to tell that I finally managed to
make a non-jackified application (jitsi meet application image in my
case) use jack. I did this by installing the libasound2-plugins Debian
package, which provides a jack plugin for alsa. Then I created an
.asoundrc with the below contents which points to the built-in soundcard
hw:0 as a default, but permits any environment variable (ALSAPP for me)
to change this assignment

pcm.!default{
type plug
slave.pcm {
@func getenv
vars [ ALSAPP ]
default "hw:0"
}
}

With jackd running I can now start any application prefixed with that
variable pointing to the jack plugin
 $ ALSAPP=jack ffmuc-meet-x86_64.AppImage

If anyone sees something I could improve here I'd be glad to know.
Thanks for the help on this list!

Thanks Clemens, just to make sure I get you right: Some applications do
not allow me to set "PCM devices" but only cards? In that case I can
only redefine default by changing/creating a .asoundrc?

I am just making my way through alsa terminology, let me ask you if you
mean a "PCM device" called hw, not the hw as a protocol for accessing
cards?

[Alsa-user] alsa-only applications (such as jitsi) via jackd

2020-04-11 Thread Peter P.
Dear Alsa-list,

I had asked this on the Linux-Audio-Users a few days ago but am still
waiting for replies. I figured this question might even better suit this
list here, so please allow me to ask it here again

I am trying to use jack for alsa-only applications (jitsi application
image, chromium for videochat in my case) over jack. Following the guide
on https://jackaudio.org/faq/routing_alsa.html I installed the
libasound2-plugins Debian package, which includes the jack pcm plugin
for alsa. This plugin is activated by
/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/50-jack.conf as a hardware plugin without
conversions, meaning that it is tied to jack's sample rate and bit
resolution. I was able to create a "plug" device which takes care of
this conversion in an otherwise empty ~/.asoundrc as follows

 pcm.jackconv{
type plug
slave { pcm "jack" }
hint {description "jack plugin with software conversions" }

aplay -L then lists this device. My next question is, how can I tell
applications to use this device? I want to avoid declaring it the
default in .asoundrc with an
 pcm.!default{
type plug
slave { pcm "jack" }
hint {description "default jack plugin with software conversions" }

I found out that there is an environment variable ALSA_PCM_CARD= but
this can only set hardware devices but not pcm device names such as my
jackconv. Then I discovered ALSA_PCM_DEVICE and tried to start jitsi
with
 ALSA_PCM_DEVICE=jackconv ~/bin/jitsi-meet-2.0.0-x86_64.AppImage
but no device "jackconv" shows up in jitsi nor are any jack ports
created for it.

Is there something I am doing wrong? Can I set pcm device names per
application as defaults?

Thanks for all ideas!
cheers, P

Thank you, but the device has at least 16 (with ADAT) or even 18 (with
SPDIF) in- and outputs, do you know if these are available?
Or is it that you are using the device as USB class compliant device,
which I suppose is limited to 8 I/O channels?

 Hi,

 I'm trying to get a Presonus AudioBox 1818VSL to work on a Raspberry Pi
 2 Model B V1.1. This sound interface works out of the box on both my
 linux desktop and laptop running Arch Linux with a kernel version of
 4.0.0 and 4.0.3.

Sorry to hijack this thread a bit, but I am interested in how well the
1818VSL is supported under linux. How many channels are you able to get
as a maximum? Is the mixer on the soundcard accessible?

Thanks,
Peter

[Alsa-user] Lenovo X201s microphone input

2014-02-25 Thread Peter P.
Hi Alsa-users

I am using a Lenovo X201s under Debian and wonder why I can't seem to
amplify the (minijack) microphone input to be usable with external
microphones.

Alsamixer gives me the following controls for capture:
Capture
Analog Mic Boost
Digital

The Analog Mic Boost does work with the internal mic, and it also
amplifies the external mic input (or mainly its noise floor), but the
external mic level is still too low.
The external microphone itself is tested and works very well on other
computers. It doesn't sound like / seem to be a faulty connector.
So I am wondering if there is any software control that is not
displayed for the external mic input in alsamixer, but that would help
me getting a clean signal at decent levels. The chip indicated is
Intel IbexPeak HDMI.

Anyone having similar experiences with that type of hardware?

Thank you all so much!
best, Peter

[Alsa-user] Strange change of sample rate upon connecting mixing desk

2014-01-29 Thread Peter P.
Hi all, now here is one of the weirdest problems I have come across in
the past years. Actually it is halting my current production even, but
I am primarily interested how this error is caused (and how it can be
solved):

The sampling rate of my RME HDSP Card is set from Internal 44.1k to
Internal 48k upon connecting a Yamaha DM1000 mixing console via usb!

The console does not provide a USB audio interface, but several midi
ports over USB, using the snd_usb_audio module.

cat /proc/asound/cards:

 0 [Intel  ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
  HDA Intel at 0xf252 irq 43
 1 [DSP]: H-DSP - Hammerfall DSP
  RME Hammerfall DSP + Multiface at 0xf000,
irq 19
 2 [DM1000 ]: USB-Audio - DM1000
  Yamaha DM1000 at usb-:00:1d.0-1.2, full
speed
29 [ThinkPadEC ]: ThinkPad EC - ThinkPad Console Audio Control
  ThinkPad Console Audio Control at EC reg 0x30,
fw 6QHT26WW-1.07

From HDSP's alsamixer I can see that upon connecting the DM1000 the
control Sample Clock Source Locking gets set to [Off], and the
sample rate is set to 48k as described above.

The change is also reflected in the 'hdspconf' software that
configures some properties of the card.

cat /proc/asound/pcm does not list the DM1000:
00-00: CONEXANT Analog : CONEXANT Analog : playback 1 : capture 1
00-03: HDMI 0 : HDMI 0 : playback 1
01-00: RME Hammerfall DSP + Multiface : RME Hammerfall DSP + Multiface
: playback 1 : capture 1

This is on a Debian box runnig kernel 3.2.0-4-rt-amd64

Can anyone imagine what causes this strange behavior?

Thank you so much for all hints

best, P

Let me add here, that upon starting any audio application using the
same card under alsa can (re)set the sampling rate to the correct
value.
If the mixer is re-connected, after that audio application was
launched, the sampling rate of the HDSP card is changed to 48k,
causing an audible transposition.
