Sometimes things get screwed up big, I remember my transition from Mandriva 10.0 to 10.1 (IIRV the versions) - sound-wise it was horrible, had to revert, Lee Revell acknowledge that realtime functionality was screwed up. Newer is not always better. I also mind it and want to see earlier kernels and alsa. The bug also presented at kernel 2.6.24 and alsa 1.0.16.
