Security Issue
Hi, reffering to the mentioned Advisories I would like to know what the latest stable version of Amanda is, that is not affected. I thought that 2.4.2p2 is the latest, as mentioned a week or so ago on this list. Below, only 2.3.0.4 is mentioned. But this wasn't shipped with FreeBSD 4.5. Thanks for info, a confused Tom http://online.securityfocus.com/archive/1/274215 Package: AMANDA Version: 2.3.0.4 Date: 26/05/2002 Issue:Local and remote overflows Risk: Medium since this is an old package Credits: zillion[at]safemode.org http://www.safemode.org http://www.snosoft.com The Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver (AMANDA) is a backup system which is available for many different Unix-based operating systems. Several setuid and setgid binaries which are installed by this package contain buffer overflow vulnerabilities that can be used to execute shellcode with elevated privileges. Additionally, the amindexd daemon contains a remote overflow bug that can lead to a remote system compromise. The affected version of AMANDA is an old package but is often used due to compatibility problems with newer versions. For example, this package was until recently shipped with the FreeBSD 4.5 ports collection.
setup amanda again
Hi, I'm planing to rebuilt the machine where amanda server is running, cause of heavy segfault problems. However, how do I accomplish that not all the administration data of amanda is lost? I thought of copying /usr/adm/amanda/ files and the disklist and config files to another host and after the amanda server is reinstalled copy them to the same location and hope that then everything is working as ever with. Any comments? Thanks in advance Tom
Re: Partitioning for amanda
I would say that it depends on your storage space :-) The ration, if compressed should not be calculated 1:2. A better estimate would be 1:1,5 or even lower. I would do my calculation on the amount of the disc not on the capacitiy utilised at the moment. Greets Tom

Check to see if amdump is still running (ps -u amanda-user). Assuming it isn't, run amcleanup. Run amcheck and make sure it's happy. Then run amdump and if it fails, report everything it had to say. If it does not fail, look in your holding disk area again. Sorry if you're reciving the mail a second time, but it didn't pop up in the mail list, as far as I can see. I included the relevant log files of the run. everything worked, without the creation of the holding disk files. Holding disk
Hi, I defined a holding disk in amanda.conf, but if no tape is present in the dat drive, amanda won't write the stuff to the holding disk. Am I missing something? I thought amanda would backup on the holding disk and I can write it later with amflush on the tape? Thanks Tom Amanda Tape Server Host Check - Holding disk /big/amanda: 20220852 KB disk space available, that's plenty WARNING: skipping tape test because amdump or amflush seem to be running WARNING: if they are not, you must run amcleanup Server check took 0.003 seconds
Re: Holding disk
That's correct. If there is no tape, Amanda will write backups into the holding disk. Before running amcleanup I checked the content of my holding disk. It contained a subfolder with the date of the normal run, but the folder was empty. I'm running Amanda version 2.4.2p2 Greetings Tom
