Up to 100 watts peak transmitter power (20 watts peak ERP) would be used. Our group has been operating on 600 meters since last fall with zero interference issues. We are hoping to get that spectrum assigned as an Amateur Band one day. 2200 meters 135.7-137.8kc is another Part 5 band being used the past few years with the same intentions. 1750 160-190kc is also being used by Part 5 stations with the same intentions although there are fewer licensed stations on that band. The Part 15 Lowfer's primarily operate on 1750 meters. I was thinking of a 450T or 450TL amp on 1750 would be lots of fun in CW too. Our power limit so far on 600 meters is 20w ERP which can take a kilowatt to get as antenna efficiency is ha ha down there. But the little antennas do radiate and the signals go far with easy. Still plenty of room for big tube's. In the winter it only takes 25-35w output power to cover the whole lower 48 states with regular CW. Way further using QRSS of course. Rudy N7LF was seen in the South Pacific Alaska. Summertime takes more power. EU CW may be possible this coming winter with the guys running larger tube amps as they get experience with the equipment and antennas. A 250TH was on my mind lately... Re: [AMRadio] 505kc (was 450T amp)
If I recall correctly the FCC is going to have a bunch of spectrum available down in the lower part when the NDB stations are mandated to cease operation, what 200-500 KCy. All those airport approaches are supposed to switch to GPS approaches in the near future, 2012 sticks in my mind as the terminal year for NDB operation, but it may be a bit sooner. In the meantime there is quite an active SWL group who monitor the NDB stations. They have a website for logging the reception of the stations and anyone can view the reception reports and log theirs. http://www.classaxe.com/dx/ndb/rna/index.php?poll=show In years past I maintained a couple of NDBs in the 200 range and they used short vertical antennas not over 25 ft. tall without radials. You should have seen the loading coils on those. Some stations had horizontal center fed antennas that were about the same height and under right conditions they could be heard many miles. The long range NDB covered out to about 300 miles reliably. I wonder if anyone is pressing for some of that spectrum or are they going to save it for something stupid like BPL? A good way to get the ball rolling would be to apply for a Part 5 license for that freq or others or even a band. www.fcc.gov/oet is the place to go. The form is a 442 and it costs 55 bucks for a application the last I heard. Yes AM would sound cool down there. Don't be shy in asking for mad power output either. You would interfere with all the AM radios in the neighborhood by getting into their IF's :-). One must NEVER interfere with Swap and Shop on AM stations under chance of being killed by irate housewives!! Or even as an AM CHANNEL?!!! Now THERE is a cool idea! You could easily detune the old tube AM broadcast band receivers to use them on that frequency! Pad those caps down from 530 kc. to 455 kc. An idea whose time has COME! My friend Bob Raide, W2ZM (aka cueball!), has one of the experimental licenses, and a station running up there. He had an article describing his transmitter in the most recent (April) AWA Journal. Also Conard (not misspelled!) After reading all these posts I suppose that the single 803 in a 100W MO circuit, TBW-5 CAY-52238 350-1000Kc, would be a good candidate if xtal controlled. It's a classic piece. High Power on those low FRQ's would shure start the bed springs and Electric Stove talking!. Starts the fluorescent lights talking for sure...hi hi...Darth Vadar style light sticks...I mean fluorescent light sticks...hi hi Best to use a DDS VFO or other adjustable freq source that is rock solid. There are crystal controlled transmitters on 600 meters (505-510kc) though and they sound just fine!!! Re: [AMRadio] 500 Kc (was Re: 450T amp)
If the M.O. output is stable, with and without keying, then it would be just fine, for CW anyway, one of my transmitters is the RCMA ET-8010A pair of 211s in the final 807 driver, 807 M.O. and is extremely stable for that era, remarkably so. There are those who would say you need the latest digital whiz-bang Gimcrack but that is not necessarily the case. One way to find out if 500 KC might be of interest to you is to dust off a receiver tune to the freqs. and see what you hear, mind it will be mostly CW, and CW beacons for now, but this is just the first round. Signals are being monitored and you can see if/when folks are transmitting over the internet by going to http://www.lowfer.us/grabber.htm or for Buffalo, NY http://eshop1.chem.buffalo.edu/Buf-Grab.html or for Kellog, Ohio http://ne-ohio-grabber.kn8azn.com/NE_Ohio_Grabber.html or for Seneca, Missouri http://www.lowfer.us/mograb.htm There are lots of opportunities for development work, (homebrewing) antenna work, (a 30 to 40 foot vertical works), and testing your skills against band conditions.
