Al, Thanks for your comments regarding all hams. I didn't meant to get a small fire going the other day when I made my comments regarding the extra waiting at 7160 with nothing going on down there. I've been on this list for some time, and with the recent changes in the B'cast stations on 40 all you would see were comment about the old a.m. freq of 7160 and let's all hit it and get going with A.M. again. Well looking at the March issue of QST page 59 shows that there are 207,000 general and advance licensees, and 115,500 Extra's. One would think that we all would not want to leave out the 207,000 general/advances potential a.m. op's in our conversation. I've made comments about this in the past and received the comment about up grading. Now I understand that in these new day's when it's NOT Fair to keep someone from doing what they want and in time the FCC will issue tickets like a fishing lic. It's still not there yet. I plan to up grade in time, Sorry for my run on mouth here. I'll be on 40 tonight running all the power I can ( 100-120watt a.m.) calling c.q. 7190 to 7180. 7 p.m. est I'm in Jacksonville, Fl, but I do throw a good signal up the east coast and out towards Alabama and Mississippi. Al, I think that most Hams realize that the knowledge gained by advancing to Extra has nothing technical to do with the band priviledges you gain by advancing. You need no additional skills to be on the extra portions of the bands than what you already have for General. If you have the ability to memorize then go ahead and do it and then have use of those additional frequencies. I was not in the hobby when the incentive licensing was put into place but the government should have licenses and tests based on technical needs, not on enticing you with greater band priviledges. But...it is what it is and you have to play the game. Thank you for the coureous reply. If you'll remember we had the same situation when they eliminated the code. I guess I am just looking at it from the standpoint of the Govt. in all there infinite wisdom selling off or giving away our frequencies. I have many AM friends I left in Maine and we had this discussion many times at club meetings. Right now all I have for an old AM rig is a G-50. I gave away several old rigs as we moved to TN and had to much to ship so will be looking for another rig to use on AM 80-40. I was not going to waste my time with a reply to this silly thread, but I'm at work and not much else to do so here it goes. This hole thing got started because some silly extra starting using 7.160 not THINKING that he was cutting out a bunch of other guys with general class tickets, that's it. As far as upgrading from General, as it already been said. The class of ticket you hold has nothing to do with how much you know or how good an op you are. I know many extras that could not twist to hunks of wire together, and many more who are poor op's. As far as someone said, I listened up and down the band and heard nothing, try speaking the words CQ into your mike and then listening, all of a sudden there will AM activity on the band. Calling CQ on a clear frequency for your class of license is probably the best source of action. The band isn't that big to tune around for contacts, and, if tuning around for contacts and/or calling CQ seems to cause you dismay, maybe you need to get on channel radio and leave the real radio operating to amateurs who have a tuning knob on their receivers and a VFO for their transmitters.
