What's the grid square for the SDR in the UK that was mentioned in this

I think it's at the university of South Hampton.

[amsat-bb] FOR SALE YAESU FT736-R FULLY LOADED

2014-08-08 Thread Dave Marthouse
I am selling a Yaesu FT-736R. The radio is in great shape and includes
the standard hand mic, speech synthesizer module, ctcss module, 50MHZ
module, and the rare 220MHZ module.

The rig's internal power supply works great.

The equipment was operated in a non-smoking environment.

As the radio is in mint condition I am asking $1200 and I'll pay the UPS
shipping.

It will be sent in it's original packing box.

I'm selling it because my new QTH unfortunately won't be practical for a
tower and weak signal satellite array.

If anyone is interested and has any questions please feel free to E-Mail
me at the address below.

[amsat-bb] Digital Satellites Question

2014-07-22 Thread Dave Marthouse
I have been following the digital satellite discussion with great
interest. Both sides have valid points.

I would like to pose a strictly engineering question. Keep in mind that
I'm not an engineer but consider myself reasonably well read on the
amateur satellite

world.

A digital satellite would imply loads of processing power on the
satellite. I would assume that with this additional activity that there
will be more
hardware on the bird with more complexity as this won't be a bent pipe
system.

With more physical hardware of much more complexity in orbit what about
the radiation hazards to this more complex and physical hardware heavier
system? Wouldn't a software based system be prone to radiation induced
hardware and software glitches?

What about shielding etc?

[amsat-bb] Mystery Satellite Question

2013-12-20 Thread Dave Marthouse
I forgot that one of the rigs here was on. It happened to be set for
145.825mHZ in FM. A few minutes ago the squelch was broken by what sounded
like 1200BPS AFSK. It almost sounded like the old UOSATS. Checking my
satellite tracking program I determined it wasn't CAPE-2, TRITON-1 or
DELFIN3XT. What birds are up now that have downlinks on or around
145.825mHZ fm? Maybe I have a set of erroneous keps. Any information on
this would be appreciated.

[amsat-bb] General Telemetry Question

2013-12-09 Thread Dave Marthouse
I noticed over the years that satellite beacon downlinks transmit their
telemetry in a form that must be translated by a telemetry app to their
engineering values. Since the information is transmitted from the satellites
why not provide the engineering values in the downlink without the extra
step having to be done on the ground? What is the logic of doing this?

[amsat-bb] Funcube AO-73 Heard On Hand Held

2013-11-22 Thread Dave Marthouse
I just had the pleasure of hearing the 0236UTC pass of Funcube AO-73 on my
TH-F6A with nothing but a Comet tri-band antenna on the radio. I was
standing in my living room. For an extremely minimalist receiving setup
like that it was a real trip! Signals were strong from the beacon on
145.935mHZ. My kudos to all involved in the project.

[amsat-bb] Theoretical Question

2013-10-13 Thread Dave Marthouse
This isn't a question regarding amateur satellites but it is an interesting
theoretical one to pose here and the same laws of physics apply. I know
that the higher the frequency that is transmitted from a satellite the
larger the Doppler shift will be. The Iridium satellites transmit at around
1.5gHZ. At that frequency I know the Doppler is large. How do they manage
to keep the portable handsets on the ground locked to the signal? Are the
handsets frequency agile to an extent? How do they achieve frequency lock
so that the digital signals are decoded?

[amsat-bb] Orbits Questions And Satellite Safety

2013-04-28 Thread Dave Marthouse
I know that the earth is surrounded by radiation belts that have the
potential of damaging satellites. How dense are they and around what
altitudes do they have their most harmful affects? I am going to hazard a
guess that this is why higher leo satellites (let's say over 1500 miles
high) haven't been launched over the years. Any information would be
appreciated.

[amsat-bb] SO-67 Question

2009-11-21 Thread Dave Marthouse
I have a question about the timers on SO-67. Their configuration to drop out
after a few seconds unless you transmit immediately after or upon a previous
station, was that done purposely or is this a software configuration issue.
What would be the purpose of setting the transponder to act this way? I am not
stating this to criticize but get the answer to this puzzling question.

I must say that signal levels are great with this new bird. I have heard it
using my TH-F6A with nothing more than the standard rubber antenna which is a
radiating dummy load.

Congratulations to Amsat SA on this great addition to our satellite fleet.

[amsat-bb] SO-67

2009-11-08 Thread Dave Marthouse
Just for fun I attempted to hear SO-67 on the 1416UTC pass this morning. It
was orbit 790 with a max elevation of 79 degrees. I was using my TH-F6A with
stock rubber duck antenna. A few minutes into the pass out of the noise came
the signal. For this minimal setup signals were rather strong. I knew I would
have no problem hearing the bird with my crossed yagis on the tower but I
wanted to see how I could push the minimalist envelope with just a stock ht. I
was pleasantly surprised with the strong signals. Congratulations to amsat sa
etc on a fine new addition to the amateur satellite service.
