John,

I have, lightly, tested SATPC32 on my Surface Pro with WIN8 64 bit. It
installs and runs without difficulty. I have a different rotator
controller, so can't comment directly. I tried a variety of USB-Serial
dongles, and all the ones which use the FTDI chip loaded a new driver and
worked perfectly.

As you may know, the Prolific chipset is the choice of pirates, and many
knockoffs have counterfeit chips. The latest Prolific drivers detect these,
and refuse to run. At least that is the explanation I have seen. I have a
USB GPS like that, but was able to find an older Vista/WIN7 driver which
runs perfectly on WIN8 64 bit.

Myself and another local ham have verified that it is the combination of

I have an old GPS unit, a Magellan explorist 210. It's fairly accurate
determining position. After it has acquired about eight to ten satellites
the position error averages between 20 to 35 feet. Now the question, the
other day I was looking at one of the information pages the unit can
display and on it, it gives the time in UTC. Just for fun I thought I would
see how close the time was to WWV. I was surprised to see the unit was
between one to four seconds off over various tests compared to WWV. IS
this typical of all GPS units or do some display the time of day more
accurately?

years ago. I love the project, but until I hear a little more positive
about what's currently going on over there, my money will continue to go
to Kiwisat, FunCube, and first and foremost, Fox. I am the proud sponsor
of a solar cell on Fox, and hope to be able to do more this year.

Have you heard we find out if we (AMSAT-NA and Fox) get one of the NASA
launches on Monday?

Hi Drew et all,

indeed all money donated to the P3-E project goes into the P3-E project
and we are grateful for all those direct contributions and support in
particular from many individual AMSAT-NA members and indeed many other
hams from around the world. Due to ITAR, unfortunatly AMSAT-NA had to
stop all it's official support (including money, which hurts) for P3-E
several years ago, as you wrote.. For example, we had to re-build and
continue the IHU hardware and software development on our own resources.
The same for the original SDX development, etc. The S/C is still
sitting in our clean room in Marburg and waiting to be finalized. Having
no firm launch date yet, activities slowed down in some areas, while
other activities and groups are highly active and well alive. The
biggest problem is indeed having no firm launch date yet.. this is
frustration for everyone involved. We all put so much volunteer work and
time into it...

When I read "Forget P3-E, build an MEO" (that's how I read it first) I
was indeed very concerned.. should we really forget all the hard work,
time and money which already went into the project and scrap it??? And
what than?No - I'm not giving up...

OK, reading the second time I understood that Dave meant we should put
P3-E on VEGA and use it's propulsion to go to MEO...

Unfortunately things are not so easy.. P3-E was designed to go from GTO
into HEO. For example, all the magnetic attitude control won't work in
MEO anymore, etc..Thus we were looking for GTO, but would it fit on
VEGA? Indeed, we could try an elliptical orbit with a much lower
apogee, but than we have to carefully study the effects of orbit
resonances which caused AO-13 to burn-up too soon. However, I do
sympathize with the idea and we thought about it in the past, but
discarded the idea for reasons I have almost forgotten now.So,
perhaps we should look again at it.. do some orbit and fuel
calculation, study orbit perturbations and orbit stability again and see
what the impact will be on the S/C design.Any volunteers for that?

As Nitin wrote, we contacted AMSAT-India to help with contacts to
ISRO, we are in contact with SpaceX and I recently had a personal
letter exchange with the CEO of Arianespace. If a launch possibility
arises, we will be on it. It is not always a matter of money, but also
a matter of compatibility to slip in. Ariane-5 for example is a real
workhorse now with standard launch configurations. Any change on that
costs them a lot of money. If there is an "unusual" configuration were
they have to ask industry for a configuration change, than it might also
be easier for us to slip in..
That simply means we have to wait for the right moment or finding new
qualification flight.. Ariane 5ME is such opportunity we are actively
working on, but this will not be before 2018.

In the last several month our work and priority was mostly focused
regarding our funding situation and to improve it. Although most people
still did not understand it, but the P5-A project is one these
opportunity we need. It is well alive and currently heavily discussed
within the highest ranks inside of our government organizations. Apart
from this, we are currently working on another project to fly an hosted
payload on a GEO satellite... A decision is not made yet, but if we get
the opportunity it will provide some neat communication capabilities.
Our previous heritage and P5 will help here too..

I'm currently having some serious family matters to take care off, so
please be patient if I do not reply quickly..

Other than a few amateur radio satellites that have piggy-backed into space
on commercial or government launches, what amateur satellites have been put
into "orbit"?

Should the hackers manage to actually get one or more satellites into space,
I suspect that they will make great targets for anti-satellite weapons.
Oops, sorry that we just destroyed Comstar-9, we were aiming for Hacker-3
:-)

There aren't any amateur efforts that I am aware of that are capable of an
orbital launch as far as rocket technology goes. I'm involved in a
multi-year effort to get a sugar propellant based rocket into space. Orbit
is not currently possible for amateur rocketry efforts so unless they can
weasel their way onto a commercial launch it ain't happening.

Back in late 1997 or early 1998 I was using a Kenwood TR9130 on 2m SSB.
One morning I was tuning from the FM to the SSB portion of the band, and
heard a station just below 146mhz. I tuned them in, and it was a station
from Wales! Obviously going thru a satellite as the 2 meter conditions
weren't that good that morning. I am now wondering what satellite it
probably was. Hearing it was enough to motivate me to eventually get into
satellite operations-that took a few years though.

Anyways, what satellite was I probably hearing? I am guessing AO10 or
AO13 but were they operational at that time?

73s John AA5JG

Hi John, AA5JG

OSCAR-10 was launched in 1983 and it started to get problems with the
main computer in 1986

OSCAR-13 was launched in 1988 and reientered because of drag in 1996

Between 1997 or early 1998 OSCAR-10 was operating time to time with
low level signals in Mode-B, 2 meters downlink while OSCAR-13 was died.

If you are sure about the time of your reception back in late 1997 or early
1998 I guess that probably you was hearing or OSCAR-10 or mostly RS-12
a powerful LEO satellite in Mode-KT with uplink in 15 meters and downlink
in two bands at the same time i.e.10 meters in the Mode-K and 2 meters in
Mode-T exactly from 145.907 to 145.953 MHz

BTW at that time 23 april 1996 OSCAR-10 was still well operational in
Mode-B because I have the QSL card from i8KRO for a QSO made through
two satellites OSCAR-10 and RS-12

The uplink on RS-12 for i8KRO was in 21 MHz and the uplink for me
on OSCAR-10 was in 435 MHz while the downlink for both of us was
in 145 MHz

Nice to remember !

Space Weather News for Sept. 26, 2011
http://spaceweather.com

GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A strong geomagnetic storm is in progress following the
impact of a coronal mass ejection (CME) today, Sept. 26th, at approximately
12:15 UT. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab report a "strong
compression of Earth's magnetosphere" and the possibility that satellites in
geosynchronous orbit have been exposed to solar wind plasma and magnetic
fields. Mid- to high-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras after
nightfall. Observing tip: The hours around local midnight are usually best
for spotting Northern and Southern Lights. Check http://spaceweather.com for
images and updates.

DON'T MISS THE STORM: Would you like a call when geomagnetic storms are in
progress? Storm alerts are available from http://spaceweathertext.com (text)

BIG SUNSPOTS: After more than a week of quiet, solar activity is picking up
with the emergence of two large sunspot groups on the sun's northeastern

So far none of the eruptions has been squarely Earth directed, but that

our planet. Visit http://spaceweather.com for images and more information.

Subject: [amsat-bb] SatPC32 ==> iPoint

Hi,

I recently completed a project that someone on the board might find
interesting. One goal was to make it compact so it could be taken and used
outside the shack. It weighs 4 lb 5 oz and connects to your computer through
a USB or serial port. Another goal was no knobs, switches or any other
controls - there is only a reset button on the circuit board that I have
never used. It would be a great thing to take along when making
presentations on ham satellites. It would also be fun on field day since it
runs off 12V and is portable. It works with SatPC32 by emulating the Yaesu
GS-232 controller. It should work with other tracking programs but I have
not tried them (SatPC32 works great for me and AMSAT needs the money).

You might want to check out the youtube video that gives a little demo. It
is full HD and looks very cool in full screen HD. I guarantee there is
absolutely no footage of me waving my Arrow II antenna around.

[amsat-bb] question about the Space Station

2011-07-05 Thread George and Cheryl Abbott
Hi All:I observed the Space Station pass over this location(Hopkinton,RI) a
couple of nights ago.The sky was relatively clear at the time. However,I
observed a slight wobble( >.05 degrees ) as it passed from NNW to SSE.I have
observed multiple Space Shuttle passes and I have never observed any wobbles in
its orbit. Is the Space Station having any troubles with its gyroscopes?Could
atmospheric conditions or the way it reflects sunlight explain my
observation?Comments welcome!

George and Cheryl,

So who is complaining? You? Harvey and I signed using our call signs.
I've never complained about hams getting more privileges, voice, WARC
bands, digital modes, LF, etc. Leaves more energy to be concerned about
hams possibly loosing privileges.

In Texas we have "Radio Plates". I heard that you can have the same call
