[amsat-bb] Working the Transponder Sats

2010-11-10 Thread Kent Frazier
It has been suggested to me that I try the transponder sats. My question is
what type of equipment would I need for this. I'm currently unable to run
any type of mast mounted antenna(s) and would prefer it be portable or
mobile if possible.

My current setup is an Icom W32-A handheld with an Elk antenna. Am I
correct in my belief that I can't work the transponder sats with an FM
radio?

Thanks

[amsat-bb] Re: AO51 pass this evening 0039UT

2010-11-09 Thread Kent Frazier
Would this apply to using a digital voice recorder also, in your opinion?

I operate handheld (using an Icom w32a and an Elk antenna) I'm unable to
write down ANY information during a contact.
I'd hate to think I'm somehow disqualified from an award because I listened
to my recordings to log my contacts after the pass is over.

The OP only missed the call by one character, and they sound similar. I'm
not sure what equipment both parties were using, but I remember having a
very hard time making out calls with my gear. Especially on AO-51 pileups.
One of the reasons I quit for awhile is I got tired of competing with the
big guns.

I've been off the air for about a year now. I'm looking forward to getting
back on the birds.

I may be hated for this but I have to ask, if you make a contact and you
get the call wrong so you would not get a QSL card because you can't mail
the right person is it really fair to use another medium to search out the
correct call in order to secure the contact for award reasons? I always
thought the QSO had to be a successful exchange of at least the call signs
over the air to count as a contact. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

In my opinion you are 100% correct. Make a second contact to make it legit.
If you just want to find the right call for your own reasons or to arrange
another contact, cool. If you want to use the busted QSO for an award, not
 cool.

[amsat-bb] Stealth Satellite Station?

2009-10-28 Thread Kent Frazier
I currently live in a rental house and an outside antenna is out of the
question. I asked about putting up a satellite TV dish at my own expense
last year and received and flat out NO. So, my current options are as
follows:

1. Going out to my car and working the FM birds with my Icom 2720H and 19
whip.
2. Working the FM birds from the back/front yard or possibly inside the
house with my Icom W32A and Elk LP antenna.
3. Setting up my 2720 in the house with some sort of stealth antenna and
give a try at satellite APRS.

Obviously options 1 and 3 still allow for option 2.

Has anyone tried any form of stealth antenna for Satellites. I am really
interested in the idea of combining the satellites and aprs together.
