[amsat-bb] Re: Frustrated -- not hearing ARRISat

2011-08-19 Thread Mike Schaffer
Burns:

Make sure your receive mode for frequency 145.950 is FM on your
Kenwood F6A handheld.

Before you upgraded with additional hardware could you receive
ARISSat-1 signals using the stock antenna inside your shack?

If you can, the next step is to remove the Diamond 2m/70cm
duplexer as it might be blocking the amplified signal from your SSB
2m pre-amp.

If that does not help, then it could be that the satellite signal are being
degraded more than 75 percent or blocked entirely by the orient strand
board (OSB) radiant barrier roof sheathing which is backed with a
specially designed aluminum foil. The same goes if your dwelling
exterior is fabricated with aluminum siding.

It that is the case, then your only hope is to mount the antenna outside.

What is the official AMSAT/ARISSat1 team finding on the ARISSat-1 70cm
quarter-wave
receive antenna on the bottom of the satellite? I have not heard updated news
about that
since the jettison occurred.

Was it the dummy load or was the dummy load taken off and the flight antenna
installed to
deployment while in the ISS ,but later accidentally broken off when the
cosmonauts hand
carried it through the Pirus hatch?

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 Heard Over Merritt Island, FL

2011-08-16 Thread Mike Schaffer
ARISSat-1 heard on 145.950 FM on Tuesday, August 16 at 2341 UTC. Nothing was
heard from AOS to Zenith
point (overhead my QTH). I initially thought the satellite battery had failed.
Then to my surprise I heard very
weak voice ID while it was tracking over Merritt Island, FL. My satellite
program showed that the satellite
was: AZ: 69 EL:+58.

[amsat-bb] Re: Secret Word question

2011-08-14 Thread Mike Schaffer
James:

ARISSat1.org are getting hundreds of reception reports flooding into the
organization.

I reported my secret word to them four days ago with no pdf certificate
received to date.

With the Aug 11 delay in high power mode while entering sunlight and then the
Aug 12 battery failing has caused a shift in priorities, less time devoted to
generating pdf certificates is my guess.

We all need to be extra patient on this one.

Mike:

My Cushcraft Oscar 2M/70cm elevation rotator had a aluminum crossboom at 50
inches in

I would recommend a fiberglass crossboom vice aluminum to keep detuning of both
antennas to a minimum.

Hi,
what could be the critical height (closest to the earth)  for the satellite,

Answer:

Giulio:

The Karman line lies at an altitude of 62 miles above the Earth's sea level,
and is commonly
used to define the boundary between the Earth's atmosphere and outer space.

[amsat-bb] ISS Packets QRM ARISSat-1 - Update 1

2011-08-07 Thread Mike Schaffer
I misstated the UTC time in the original message. It should have been 0423 -
0443,
which is 12:23 - 12:43 am local EDT.

On the latest pass, August 7, 1243 - 1247 UTC ISS packets are still coming
through the 2M downlink on 145.950 FM interfering with reception of the SSTV
and voice transmissions.

Two packet signals occurred while over the U.S.A. and one while south of Pinar
del Rio,
Cuba.

2011-08-07 Thread Mike Schaffer
ISS packets are coming through the 2M downlink on 145.950 FM interfering with

There were two ISS packet signals noted on Saturday, August 7 at 1223 - 1243
UTC at
AOS - San Luis Potosi, Mexico to LOS - New York/Vermont border. Both packet
signals occurred while over the U.S.A.

Not sure if the source of the packet signals are from the 145.800 worldwide
crossband FM repeater downlink channel or the 145.990 packet uplink channel.
