[amsat-bb] Fw: Field Day 2014

2014-06-25 Thread Peter Portanova
Hello,

I’m hoping to be writing an article about FD and the activity on the Amateur
Satellites. It would be helpful, to the story, if the stations operating
provided me with the call sign you will be using along with your operating
class and ARRL section. I will be on all the available satellites using the
call W2GSB, 5A, NLI and W2TOB for the GOTA contacts.

Good Luck, Have Fun and talk up AMSAT, thank you.

[amsat-bb] KySat Dashboard

2013-11-22 Thread Peter Portanova
Hello,

It’s been some time that I linked my TNC to a dashboard output, and I honestly
forgot the setup. I know that the TNC needs to be in KISS mode and there might
be a serial port emulator in the setup. If anyone can give me some guidance on
the required steps to allow the TNC to talk to the KYSat dashboard I would be
very grateful, thank you.

[amsat-bb] Elections- Hudson Division

2012-09-27 Thread Peter Portanova
My Apologies in advance, this is off topic, however this is an important
election, Mike was part of our team that spoke with Rep. Pete King on HR 607,
thank you. WB2OQQ

AMSAT- HUDSON DIVISION ARRL MEMBERS

I am supporting Mike Lisenco N2YBB for the position of Hudson Division
Director. Mike has a long history of service to the Amateur Radio community. He
is currently the Section Manager for the New York City/Long Island Section.

Mike has demonstrated that he understands both the hobby and the service
aspects of Amateur Radio. He is an active ham who participates in Emergency
Communications. He was an ARES District and Section Emergency Coordinator and a
RACES Radio Officer. He also enjoys operating in contests, chasing DX, and just
plain ragchewing.

His extensive field experience gives him the knowledge base to understand the
policies that need to be instituted by the ARRL. I believe he will bring new
ideas and a fresh approach to the League. He listens to the opinions of the
membership and incorporates their ideas into his plans

There are 15 Directors in the ARRL. Their purpose is to develop policy that
affects all hams for years to come. Leadership from the Hudson Division
Director is crucial to the future success of Amateur Radio. . I know that Mike
is strong enough to represent the interests of the Hudson Division in
Newington. He has the time and the ability to best represent all of us. In my
opinion, he is the right choice for the job.

It is important that you vote. Starting October 1 balloting will be open for
ARRL Hudson Division Director for those who have an email address on file with
ARRL. You will receive instructions on how to vote electronically. Paper
ballots will be mailed for those ARRL members who don't have an email on file.

Join me in voting for Mike N2YBB when balloting begins next week. If you would
like more info about Mike, go to his website www.hudsonhams.com

receive a Certificate of Confirmation, visit http://www.nw2c.org/911.html,
for all the details, NW2C will also be operating on the general bands, check
clusters for frequency updates.

I look forward to demonstrating the enjoyment amateur operators have using
the satellites and it's potential as another communications possibility in a
crisis, so let's put on a good show
for the very special people that will be invited to this 911 event, thank

[amsat-bb] Re: FM satellites

2011-07-06 Thread Peter Portanova
Dave,

I'm not about to convert you to the FM satellites, you were very fortunate
to operate during the halcyon period for amateur satellites. However, we
want to keep amateur satellites in space, and we must deal with the current
economic situation. It is a thrill for me to teach someone how to operate
thru an FM satellite with an HT in their yard and experience that excitement
thru them.

Dave, I can understand your position on how easy it is for you to operate an
FM satellite, it may be that you have an Oscar station which would make it
boring and too easy for you.

Here is a challenge, Tim Lilley, N3TL earned the Oscar Satellite
Communications award using only 50 mW and a hand held antenna for all his
contacts, give it a try and report back how easy that is to accomplish.

[amsat-bb] Re: I'm missing something

2011-07-05 Thread Peter Portanova
John,

What do I know, but the FM satellites in addition to providing grids and
awards have evolved into another type of social media, after making many
contacts and a few friends on the FM satellites, I continue to visit,in
spite of the crowds, to say a quick hello to Rick, Tim, Marc, Allen etc. not
as often, spending more time on the Linear satellites, which we all should
and can evolve to. A lot of us are interested in building our grid count,
or working a station in Mexico or Brazil or someone on a grid expedition. I
can fully appreciate others who cannot embrace any of this and are bored
with the congestion, so they move on. But for many of us, the thrill and
goose bumps we get working thru a satellite spinning in space never gets
old, so we accept the situation and feel that the positives outweigh the
negatives and plan for another pass.

[amsat-bb] FD- 2011

2011-06-27 Thread Peter Portanova
Hello All,

I too was disappointed by the pileups on all the satellites, our FD
location, W2GSB,is part of our Town Hall facility, it is a great location
for the public to experience what we do as amateur radio operators. However
it is a very poor location for satellite activity, too much RF leakage from
the cell towers buildings and large trees. I was using a hand-held antenna
and low power and didn't have a chance. It was the type of chaos we see for
a rare DX station or in one of the popular contests, having a mix of CW and
SSB in the same space on the linear satellites was an additional challenge.

I had visitors during all my passes, we had groups from the Scouts, the
Explorers etc., unfortunately they heard what I heard and it was not a good
demonstration of what Field Day should be. I really don't know what the
solutions if any, to fix it for us. What we do is a challenge during the
best of times when you add the FD fuel, with less structure that terrestrial
radio has, chaos ensues. I wonder if it's feasible to have a few satellite
stations, around the country, that have a good FD location, act as the DX
stations and set up a call in by numbers for a few designated passes, to
demonstrate to the public why we love what we do and maybe interest them
enough to join AMSAT and become a satellite operator.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 Failure to Transmit

2011-04-16 Thread Peter Portanova
Hello,

I don't possess any inside information on what the cause was of ARISSat-1
not to be heard, however I have a theory. We know that Packet
transmission's ended and began soon after the posted times for ARISSat to be
powered on/off, this action was done because they agreed that the satellite
woke up.The power on sequence for ARISSat-1 is visual, meaning that if
their was a battery failure they would not have seen the satellite power up.
If we believe that this occurred a possible reason for not hearing the
satellite was that it was connected to the wrong antenna, and seeing the
coax in this area it is conceivable that this might be the cause. I know we
will learn what actually occurred, at some point, it's our priority not
theirs, perhaps we can have a contest, pick the cause and the winner can
win a good night's sleep in a motel of their choice, satellite equipment not
permitted.

[amsat-bb] ELK Antenna

2011-01-12 Thread Peter Portanova
Ron,

My Pleasure, this is their site, http://www.elkantennas.com/ feel free to
talk with Ray the owner and you can mention my name and that you read my
posting as a result of Ham Radio University, if you have an interest. I
always used an Arrow antenna, by default, until Tim, N3TL was invited to do
a Satellite Forum, he asked Arrow if they would give some support, they said
NO! He never used an ELK but asked them for a donation and they gave him an
Antenna to raffle.

He then purchased an ELK and began to do many side by side tests and the ELK
was very impressive at AOS/LOS and it seemed to respond very well to the
polarization changes as we twisted it. The Arrow does not publish any gain
numbers on the antenna, some have come up with their own values but not
official, ELK publishes the normal numbers you would expect, good luck and
most of all Enjoy the Satellites, NOW, nothing is forever!

2011-01-12 Thread Peter Portanova
Drew,

That's funny, I was thinking that too, we just associate Arrow with
portable Satellite operations. I was just so impressed that Ray would just
give me an antenna, and I didn't even own one, that was special.

As a result of the publicity of giving away an ELK antenna in my Satellite
forum, the room was packed and people outside looking thru the glass, but
they had a raffle ticket! Drew, at that point I knew that we don't get many
opportunities to talk about the work AMSAT does and the need for membership
and donations with bigger groups, I spent five valuable satellite minutes
connecting my talk to AMSAT and if I added value then you need to transfer
that feeling to your AMSAT involvement. I hope my message got thru to just
a few.

[amsat-bb] Fw: Lighthouse/Lightship Special Event 8/21-8/22

2010-08-24 Thread Peter Portanova
Hello,

On behalf of the Great South Bay Amateur Club, I want to thank all the
terrific satellite operators who participated in Lighthouse/Lightship
weekend, with the W2GSB/LH call. We made a total of 63 contacts, 15 States
and two countries on FM. I had a terrific time in spite of the occasional
rain and wind, we had good crowds on some of the passes that were in awe of
a small antenna and radio talking in space, thank you very much, pictures
will be in a future Amsat journal showing this beautiful location.

The event under the leadership of our President, W2HCB, John, a satellite
convert, was fun for all..

If you want a very nice QSL of your contact, go to www.gsbarc.orf, for

[amsat-bb] Re: =13 original colonies ?=

2010-07-20 Thread Peter Portanova
Robert,

We did have the Original 13 Colonies event, here is what was posted. I was
WB2OQQ/K2A and I made over 108 contacts in the three days. Dave, took over
for Tim, see you next year!

73's Pete
WB2OQQ
www.massapequanyweather.com

Hello,

We have ten out of the thirteen colonies represented.. You can make up
special QSL cards for your station to send to whoever you contact if you
choose. As far as callsigns go, I was unable to get special calls for us due
to time( selling house, buying house, and 8 week old baby), so we will do
like we did last year, using our own calls with a /K2A, /K2B, /K2C and so
on.

 Here are the calls-

NY- Pete, WB2OQQ/K2A
VA- Steve, NL7VX/K2B
RI ---
CT- Paul, K1PL/K2D
DE
MD- Bruce, WA3SWJ/K2F
GA- Tim, N3TL/K2G
MA- Dave, KB1PVH/K2H
NJ --
NC- Mark, N8MH/K2J
NH- Rik, N1XED/K2K
SC- Art, K4YYL/K2L
PA- Rich, K3BFS/K2M

Here is the email I got from Ken with more details.

Hi Dave: All I need is just the number of contacts each colony station made
with other stations for the special event. Like I made 1285 contacts from NY
as K2A during the SE with other stations in 2009. We are going on the honor
system as far as the contact logs are concerned. It is just to much to check
for each certificate request. 12,500 in 2009. I believe most hams are honest
:) .. So each Sat.operator representing a Colony State must email me with
only one number-the total contacts made on Satellite..for the special event
only July 1st to July 5th..It doesn't matter if you cant get all 13 colonies
on Sat, you got 10 already. So if an operator gets 10 of the Sats, he can
get the other 3 on HF! for a clean sweep. Go to my bio KU2US on QRZ.com and
read all that is there. An operator is eligible for a certificate if he
makes one contact or in between to all 13. If YOU the Colony station would
like to also contact all 13 for a certificate, then YOUR state is counted
automatically, so you would have to only get the remaining 12. THIS log
needs to be sent to me for a certificate. The cert. is free to all colony
operators.

Thanks-Ken

I think that is all, but if I missed something, give me a yell.

Have fun on the birds If anyone has questions, feel free to email me.

Dave - KB1PVH/K2H

[amsat-bb] Re: FIELD DAY SCORING/ Hamfest

2010-06-07 Thread Peter Portanova

Dee,

Yes Dee good point, now that a station can make FD points on all the
Linear Satellite's it might encourage Clubs to increase their AMSAT
visability and run a complete station. It will be another opportunity to
help DARA add more matching funds towards our goal of Getting Back into
Space.

I had a fantastic Hamfest hosted by LIMARC, we had a very visable location,
next to the well designed Great South Bay ARC's communications trailer,
which brought more visitors to our AMSAT Booth. I want to thank K2TV,
AB2ZI, W2JGH, K2IZ, W2HCB and KA2CAQ, all graduates of my satellite classes
who helped with the non-stop visitors to our booth.

I also want to thank, Richie, K2KNB, who headed the LIMARC Hamfest and the
other volunteers for making AMSAT so welcome, you always run a big succesful
event. I will be making a satellite presentation to the club in November.
I have attached a few pictures of the day..

[amsat-bb] FIELD DAY SCORING

2010-06-05 Thread Peter Portanova
Hello,

I was in contact with the ARRL, after I read 7.3.7. and 7.3.7.1. in the Field
Day Rules. I mentioned to the League that I would like them to point out where
in those rules it would prohibit scoring the same call on multiple Linear
Satellites. They listened to my point's and agreed that even though the rules
refer to satellite contacts as a separate band there is nothing in those
rules that prohibit the aforementioned scoring. In conclusion Field Day and
the AMSAT scoring are now in agreement, have fun.

2010-05-20 Thread Peter Portanova
Frank,

We were forwarded, via the AMSAT-BB, from Mineo the FO-29 telemetry that you
captured and anylyzed. As an observer and avid user of FO-29 I found it
very informative. If the solar array output continues to deteriorate
perhaps the control operators might consider a PL tone to open the
transmitter to conserve the battery when not in use, which is what they are
doing with AO-51. I agree with you Frank that FO-29 is a wonderful high
orbit LEO however I must disagree with your statement
AMSAT seems only interested in FM single channel repeater type satellites
which are very boring to me.Amsat is just as interested as we are in
launching a HEO Satellite, it is the financing of such a project in this new
global economy that is holding the launch back, thank you.73's

2010-05-04 Thread Peter Portanova
Ron,

I really like your message, if it was easy it wouldn't be as fun. All to
often some satellite operators build taller and bigger having unrealistic
expectations and stop smiling after a pass. I've been helping a club member
who has been a ham over 40 years, he was timid about what it took to make a
satellite contact. I put an Arrow in his hands, taught him about frequency
steps for Doppler, and how to use his wrist during a pass. A week later,
John how did go, well haven't had the chance excuse. John, look I will pick
a pass for you 40 degrees, just listen, he did and the smile started. The
next day, he had three confirmed QSO's, would of had more but his pencil
broke in the excitement, digital tape next, his smile is not going away!
keeping it simple and remembering if it was too easy it wouldn't be as
much fun, thank you Ron.
