The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and 9M2RPN. The contact should be audible over Malaysia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Our first ARISS contact was made in 2007 when, Malaysia's first Astronaut Shiekh Muzapher went on board ISS. We made 5 direct contacts when, some 80 school children to talked to him and asked questions. Since then it has become highly sought after yearly event which is tied up with the Prime Minister's Space Challenge Trophy. This year 2013 we would be making our 8th yearly contact. Since the schools do not have ground stations, they make use of Satellite Ground Station at National Planetarium established in 1995 under the call sign of 9M2RPN. The schools are the nurseries to produce future astronauts and space scientists. The forthcoming contact in October, 2013 provides the hands on experience and the seeding operation for tomorrow's space scientists. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How far do you have to go to escape gravity? 2. What is the escape velocity to reach ISS? 3. When you have achieved orbit what is the first thing that you do? 4. Is it hard to eat in space? 5. How does it feel to float in space? 6. How does one get treated in case of sudden sickness in space? 7. If there is air leak in ISS what emergency action would be taken? 8. Can you weigh yourself in weightlessness? 9. Do you sweat in space? 10. Can you grow seeds in space? 11. Can you see other satellites from the ISS? 12. What time zone do you observe in space? 13. How many sun rises and sun sets you see in space? 14. How often you get to speak to your families in space? 15. How is garbage disposed in space? 16. How do astronauts train for launch, orbit and reentry? 17. How would a candle burn in space? 18. Can you blow your nose in space? 19. If you sneeze in space do you float backwards? 20. Can you see stars in daytime when you are in space? [amsat-bb] Alpha Spid Big-RAS AZ EL Rotator
Dear All, I understand that the Alpha Spid Big-RAS AZ EL Rotator requires 4 control cables each for it Azimuth and Elevation control. However, I am not able to find out if the connector on the outdoor rotator end consist of 2 separate connectors for the AZ and EL motor (like the Yaesu G-5500) or if they are connected all together at one point. Also would be great if someone could advice if the connection point consists of screw on terminals or some kind of connector plug is used. This is in preparation of ISS HAM TV reception and would like to understand the above before deciding if I should purchase this rotor. Thank you. 73, Sion Chow Q. Hi Stefan, Thank you for the reply and also to those who have replied privately. I have taken a look the high resolution version and though I agree that this is a better option to go, cost is unfortunately prohibitive at this time. Anyhow will still re-evaluate the options and perhaps in a long run this would better, since I have intention to work EME in the future. 73, Sion, 9M2CQC, WQ2C Quoting Stefan Wagener wagen...@gmail.com: Hi Sion, Look at the images at: http://www.rfhamdesign.com/products/antennerotor/bigrashr/index.html there is one picture with the terminal box open on the rotor. Also, the rotors are now available with a high resolution option (0.1 degree). If you get a new one, might as well do that. We are planning on doing the same for a station here in Winnipeg. Also, compare prices for the rotor. Even with shipping and taxes the above mentioned source is still far less expensive then anyone in NA. [amsat-bb] Yaesu G-5500 Azimuth Motor Replacement
Dear All, Greetings from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I have a Yaesu G-5500 rotator that has a spoilt azimuth motor while the elevation motor works fine. Looking at the specifications published by Yaesu, the G-800 rotator seems to be very similar with the azimuth motor of the G-5500. Instead of purchasing a whole new set of G-5500 just to replace the spoilt azimuth motor (the control box is working and this has been verified with another working azimuth motor), I wonder if anyone has tried replacing the azimuth motor the G-800 instead? Will the G-5500 control box work with the G-800 motor, are there some modifications needed, or is this simply not possible? Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 73, Sion Chow Q. [amsat-bb] Re: Yaesu G-5500 Azimuth Motor Replacement
Dear All, Thank you for all the replies to this topic which is greatly appreciated. In conclusion, I guess I will have to either (1) Replace the azimuth portion with a G-800 using a seperate control box for azimuth and elevation or (2) try to replace the azimuth portion with a G-450 rotor. Has anyone successfully tried connecting the G-450 rotor motor directly to the G-5500 control box? 73, Sion Chow Q. C., 9M2CQC, WQ2C On 10 Jul 2013, at 05:10, Stephen E. From looking at the manual for the G-5500, the azimuth rotor is completely different from the G-800. The G-5500 (and the G-5400) azimuth rotor is an AC motor with two coils and three wires for the motor. The G-800 is a DC motor with only two wires. (Both systems use an additional 3 wires for the position potentiometer, so five wires for the G-800 and six wires for the G-5400/G-5500.) The G-450A rotor is similar to the azimuth half of the G-5500, judging from the manual. However, I'd look for someone who owns a G-450A who can verify that for you. The G-450A manual omits a schematic and some important specifications like the motor voltage. [amsat-bb] IC-910H with SATPC32ISS
Dear All, Previously we have been using the ICOM IC-910H transceiver with SATPC32ISS for doppler control for our ARISS school contacts. Due to ISS has both its TX and RX frequencies in the 2M band, we had to use an extra wire between the IC-910H's ACC jack and the PC's COM port to inhibit frequency changes while the radio is transmitting. Based on the What's New document of SATPC32ISS (http://www.dk1tb.de/What's%20New.txt), it is noted that the extra wire between IC-910H's ACC jack and the PC's COM port is no longer needed from version 12.8a onwards. However, when we did a simulation of this, we notice that should the frequency changes (due to doppler shift) while the radio is in transmit mode, the TX and RX frequency swaps (TX frequency becomes RX while RX frequency becomes TX) - as what used to happen during previous version when the ACC wire is not installed. I wonder if there are some configurations that we need to check? Or is there something that we are doing wrong here? The IC-910H is connected via a G4ZLP ICOM CI-V cable to the PC's build in COM port. Any pointers or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 73, Sion Chow Q. [amsat-bb] Re: Decoding wideband recordings
Mike, First of all, thank you for the very great software :) Just to clarify, in this case you will be tuning dopper at HDSDR instead of FCD control level? Which if I get it right will result in the I/Q of the pass being recorded without doppler control? 73, Sion, 9M2CQC Quoting Mike Rupprecht m...@mike-rupprecht.de: Sion, another point to the DDE aspect: just working on the DDE link between SATCONTROL and HDSDR. At the moment HDSDR supports only Orbitron (Doppler tracking interval 1s), HRD and WXtrack. If I change the application name of SATCONTROL to Orbitron, the link can be established and it works. The idea behind is to end the LO Frequency to the FUNCubeDonge once - and keep it fix - BUT change the TUNE frequency of HDSDR. This is possible in 1 Hz steps, so you can follow a narrowband signal (CW/BPSK) much continuously. (You can't change the LO Frequency of the FCD in 1 Hz steps). 73, Mike DK3WN If HDSDR could use the DDE output of WISP, it can start recording when a satellite name appears, and stop when '*** NO Satellite ***' appears. These are just some of my thoughts to make automatic unattended reception easier, but I must say that DK3WN's FCD control + HDSDR are really great pieces of software. Thanks and 73, Tom n4zpt Okay, everybody make and keep your wideband I/Q recordings and I'll work on an enhancement to my demodulation/decoding software to process them. It may not run in real time on slower machines because of the need to search a wider frequency range, but this won't matter if it can work on a recording. I can probably speed things up by including an orbit model in the modem to predict Doppler open-loop, but this will take time to implement and it will still be vulnerable to small errors in the elements and/or your clock, especially around closest approach. So record the date and time of your recordings and the current eleset at that time. For those who have not noted this feature, HDSDR will open a recording scheduler if you right click on the 'record' button. It saves files with UTC time appended. The tricky part is that you have to set the scheduler manually in local time. I've been thinking it would be a nifty hack to make a FCD recorder for a set of satellites using a very small computer, like the BeagleBoard. It seems to me that a daily cron job with 'Predict' would just about do what was necessary, especially now that we have a commandline tool for the FCD. The only part that would take some fiddling would be piping the USB sound card into a file with the proper headers for HDSDR. 73, Bruce VE9QRP I have to agree that HDSDR's recording scheduler is a really neat feature. However, two improvements that I believe can make this even better will be: 1. Although HDSDR can 'start' the receiving based on the start time of a scheduler record, it only stops the recording at the end time of the scheduler. It does not 'stop' the receiving - which will be good to save CPU resources if the SDR is used in an automated unattended satellite tracking station that has the PC shared with other stuff. 2. The need to set the scheduler manually could be eliminated if HDSDR can make use of DDE output of satellite tracking software. For example, in my station I use WISP + WISPDDE for antenna tracking while the FCD is controlled by DK3WN's FCD control software. If HDSDR could use the DDE output of WISP, it can start recording when a satellite name appears, and stop when '*** NO Satellite ***' appears. These are just some of my thoughts to make automatic unattended reception easier, but I must say that DK3WN's FCD control + HDSDR are really great pieces of software. Any pointers to this are truely appreciated. Thank you. 73, Sion Chow Q. C., 9M2CQC, Also: WQ2C /HL1, 9V1QC, JG1XHM, ex: 9W2QC, AB3IO ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat TLM soundcard selection ?
Hi Henk, I seem to have the same problem as you do, and how I overcame it is to ensure that the sound card that you want ARISSatTLM to use is the default system sound card. Perhaps the developer of ARISSatTLM can place an option in the software to allow us to select the desired sound card to use with it? 73, Sion, 9M2CQC On 7 Aug 2011, at 11:23 PM, PA3GUO pa3...@amsat.org wrote: Case: Using ARISSatTLM with the output of HDSDR (connected to FCD SDR). - using Win XP (by luck ?) [amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat TLM soundcard selection (and submission listings)
Hi Henk, I totally agree with your suggestion, and to make it easy student is the key to get the younger generation interested in all these. I also understand that the ARISSat-1 team is already working on a page to show the submission of telemetry, so we shall wait a while and see. 73, Sion, 9M2CQC Quoting PA3GUO pa3...@amsat.org: Hi Sion, Great suggestion. Another suggestion: Not for us experimenters, but for schools / teachers / others / .. : ARISSatTLM setup under Win7 worked fine, the assumed directory for the TLM storage was indeed used. For Win XP this did not work: I got an error message when starting ARISSatTLM, it looked for the directory on the wrong place (it was created somewhere else). So I moved that directory to the place it was looking for it, and it works. I know there is a heads up on this issue during the install process, but still. For those many new people we try to interest (those 1+ million AMSAT reached with the press release), it would be good to fix this. Just my 2 cents. Henk (btw: the SW overall looks good quite appealing (also important in this case), it seems to incorporate the best ideas of recent other space programs, including Delfi-C3, RAX, ..) Another idea (maybe this is already in place and I missed it) It would be nice to have on the ARISSat telemtry website (latest values) an overview of which stations submitted the data (they entered their callsign under 'tools'). That would highly motivate new people to contribute. Imagine you are a student, and build a receive set-up, and can show your teacher your name/call is listed on the official ARISSat website ! Projects like RAX and FASTRAC do this already: http://fastrac.ae.utexas.edu/for_radio_operators/users/phpBB3/topuploads.php Henk -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: Sion Chow Q. C. [amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 over West Malaysia 07 Aug 0202 UTC
Dear All, Had a 20 degree elevation pass in sunlight of ARISSat-1 over West Malaysia at 0202 UTC, 07 August 2011. Managed to copy and forward 21 telemetry and kursk frames to the ARISSatTLM server, and this time I had SATPC32 adjust the doppler in 10 Hz steps. Although the doppler correction seems to be a bit too frequent, but it made the CW signal stay on the yellow marker fairly accurately. However, due to fading only 21 frames were copied. I guess the copying would be better if the fading rate is reduced. Still experimenting with this mode, and hope that the above will be useful to someone. Also noticed from previous observations that it is difficult to get a lock when the satellite is in low power eclipse mode, as the TX gets turned off too quickly. Have a great weekend to all. 73, Sion Chow Q. C., 9M2CQC, Also: WQ2C /HL1, 9V1QC, JG1XHM, ex: 9W2QC, AB3IO ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] Wisat32 Question
Dear All, I am trying to use Wisat32 for unattended automated satellite tracking and have some questions if anyone could help me clarify: 1. Is it possible for Wisat32 to run a normal .bat batch file say 20 seconds before AOS and 20 seconds after LOS? This is used for power on and off to the satellite equipment. Previously WISP used to be able to do this, but I do not see the settings in Wisat32. 2. Is there any setting to ignore passes below a predefined elevation, for example below 5 degrees. Thank you. 73, Sion Chow Q. C., 9M2CQC, Also: WQ2C /HL1, 9V1QC, JG1XHM, ex: 9W2QC, AB3IO ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 over West Malaysia
Dear All, It was great to receive ARISSsat-1 over West Malaysia during 5th August 2011, 0223 UTC pass. Maximum elevation was 89 degrees. The downlink of both 145.919 MHz USB and 145.950 MHz FM was 59+60db, very strong but with huge QSB observed. A total of 3 SSTV pictures were forwarded to the ARISS SSTV gallery and some telemetry/Kursk data were forwarded by ARISSatTLM. Congratulations to all those involved with ARISSsat-1 and we look forward to trying out the transponder on the next pass. A few questions I have if someone could please help me clarify them: 1. Is it possible to have the callsign and forwarding telemetry option always set in ARISSsatTLM? This way, we do not have to manually enter the callsign and enable telemetry forwarding each time the program starts up. 2. Does the CW beacon needs to be really +/- 100 Hz of the yellow line? The reason for this is that I would like to see how much offset should I apply to doppler control, for possible automated reception. 3. In low power (eclipse) mode, how often does the BPSK1000 telemetry transmits? Thank you. 73, Sion Chow Q. C., 9M2CQC, Also: WQ2C /HL1, 9V1QC, JG1XHM ex: 9W2QC, AB3IO ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Repair of SSB Preamp/Downconverter
Dear All, I remember asking on this list before about sources to repair a fault SSB SP-7000 70CM Masthead Preamp and SSB UEK-3000 2.4 GHz - 144 MHz downconverter a while back (should be about 2 years ago if my memory serves me right) and got a reply from someone in Japan who does provide this service. Would be glad if that person could kindly e-mail to me off the list as I have some inquiries to make about the repair service. Unfortunately I lost his email address and could not trace back that e-mail. Thank you, and please accept my apologies for the bandwidth. 73, Sion Chow Q. [amsat-bb] XW-1 over Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Dear All, After a long time away from the satellites, I am pleased to report the reception of XW-1 over Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Time was 1416 UTC to 1435 UTC and I had a maximum elevation of 68 degrees. Managed to copy the beacon on 435.790 CW +/- with a very good signal of S9+. Tried to work the FM and Linear transponder, but unfortunately could not get the downlink. Is the transponder off during this pass? Time permitting, will try out again 1.5 hours from now. Congratulations to the China team for the very successful launch. 73, Sion Chow Q. C., 9W2QC, WQ2C. ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author.
