[amsat-bb] FM birds
I hope someone can launch a 100 of them, single channel ,pileup ,total chaos ,someone keying down on the entire pass what more would you want. All we need to bust a crazy pile up is a 300 watt mfj amp right? Lets all work to the good of the satellite part of the hobby. SSB/CW birds are the only way to go and if you build it they will come . Now if someone can build a multi channel FM bird then do it. Lets face it guys ,everyone got mad trying to work AO51 and AO27. Was it fun making a call to a grid you wanted only to have someone key down on him coming back to you, Is this what you want , Then go to 20 meters DX. Single channel FM birds are obsolete, Damon ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? Join now to support the amateur satellite program! [amsat-bb] W5KUB live web cast of field day
I have been asked by ICOM to webcast field day this year. We have scheduled 3 locations that will be webcast. 1. Memphis, 2. Olive Branch field day, and 3. Northeast Mississippi gang in Fulton, Ms. My schedule would be Memphis on Saturday morning, Olive branch on Sunday morning, and Fulton, MS on Sunday afternoon. Because of travel times, I will probably have only a couple hours at each of the MS locations but should have much more time for Memphis. I need your help. Can you find me someone that can speak about field day at Memphis and that person will be interviewed. Also are there specific stations in the Memphis field day you want to show more or highlight? Rick and Damon will you be there and are you planning to work any satellite? I think that would also be good content that people will be interested in. [amsat-bb] Amsat satellite
OK this really gets me. Go to space weather.com A dummy obama can get a free ride into space and tons of cube sats can get into space, but Amsat has to wait another year and half. All the cub sats are doing is gathering comm data and they will later ask the FCC and the gov. to sell them the 70 cm band for there LEO's Remember a few years ago the ARRL had an artical about hams losing this band to companies that wanted it for LEO bussiness communications, the same way we lost part of the 220 band This is not the way people. A dummy obama in space come on. AMSAT you have to do better Im sorry but this is how I see it WA4HFN ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Well all this sounds great , BUT does Amsat have the money to put anything in space If so why has it not been done. As I said once before the cubsats that go beep beep have not helped me or anyone get a single new grid.. Can anyone at Amsat convince the schools or the rocket folks to let a ham satellite ride along with any launch? Im am sure that there are alot of satellite users out there who careless about the beepers. Looking to the future I would think that Amsats support may drop off some without something positive for the supporters to lock on to ( A DATE ) I just don't understand the need for beepers Im sorry Damon - Original Message - From: Gus 8P6SM 8p...@anjo.com To: Gordon JC Pearce gordon...@gjcp.net Cc: amsat-bb@amsat.org Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2012 9:55:01 AM Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: OH2AUE P3E transponder demo video On 10/18/2012 02:47 AM, Gordon JC Pearce wrote: On 18/10/12 03:28, Gus 8P6SM wrote: On 10/17/2012 05:38 PM, Gordon JC Pearce wrote: We're going to have to try coming up with clever satellites, rather than flying a bent-pipe box the size of a fridge. No-one is going to want to lift that, without us paying full price. I may not be 100% on the 'bent pipe' definition, but if it means hams 'talk' on the UP and other hams 'listens' on the DOWN, then that's what What I am referring to is linear transponders. They're heavy and consume a lot of power. We need to either devise a new way of doing that, that doesn't involve heavy inefficient linear amplifiers, or stick to something like FM or GMSK where a little lightweight PA that doesn't dissipate most of the input power as heat will do the job. A full-duty-cycle FM transponder that eats up the entire bandwidth of the satellite to allow a single ham to communicate strikes me as far less sensible than an efficient linear transponder that allows multiple simultaneous contacts and does not run the PA at full duty cycle. But never the less, I don't really care what the operating mode for communication is, so long as there actually *IS* an operating mode for communication. Satellites that DON'T allow hams to communicate are not of any interest to me, and (IMHO) are not relevant in any discussion of AMATEUR satellites. we need. Whether it be the size of a fridge of a matchbox, if ham radio operators can't use it to communicate, then it's pretty pointless. It If it's big it won't fly, unless you pay for the whole flight. Have you noticed how airlines have stopped carrying children for free, too? And most people have long ago stopped whining about it and now simply pay for their children to fly. So let's pay for a flight and stop whinging about how we can't get a free one. don't matter how much telemetry it sends, how many LEDs it blinks, how clever the beacons, or what purty pictures it downlinks. If hams can't use it to QSO, then why bother? It depends what you're trying to achieve. I'll respond to Domenico's comments here, too. Most satellites are not built by radio amateurs. They're not there so you can talk to your friends. They are built so the engineering students that will build the satellites and spacecraft of the future. Most satellites have nothing whatsoever to do with the engineering students of the future. But we don't get all goo-goo eyed over the launch of some military spy-sat because it has nothing to do with amateur radio. And neither do most of the cubesats. Like it or not, amateur radio is a secondary service on 70cm. We don't own that chunk of band. If you want to work a band free from beep sats, stick to 2m and good luck with your build. Uh-oh! As a recent posting leads us to understand, UMSATS TSat-1 uses 437 *and* 145 MHz amateur radio bands. excuses excuses, sounds like obama blaming Bush .Lets face guys It looks like the future of the ham satellite is almost over due to cost of a launch. We can all type fancy excuses all day long about this subject and still get no where . It is up to the people that the 22% have voted into the Amsat positions to lead us into the future of ham satellites and up to us as the users to support Amsat the best we can with money and ideas that can be productive to our cause. I do not support the school beeper birds , but if they would add a repeater to their bird that would change the entire problem. Here is the plan: - First, 15h10 to 15h20: WE WISH and RAIKO from POD #1 - Second,16h30 to 16h40: TechEdSat, F-1 và FITSAT-1 from POD#2 All time in UTC. The event is planned to be broadcasted live on the following websites: http://iss.jaxa.jp/iss/jaxa_exp/hoshide/library/live/ http://www.ustream.tv/nasahdtv 30 minutes after deployment from the station, F-1 will begin transmitting beacon alternatively on its main and backup channels. Telemetry and beacon data from F-1 contain critical information about the satellite’s health (battery solar cell voltages, temperature readings) and they are very important to us, especially in the first week of operation. Thus, we would like to ask the amateur radio community to help in tracking and receiving data from F-1 CubeSat. Here’s a quick summary of F-1’ frequencies: - 145.980 MHz: main channel, 1.0W RF output, FM, AFSK 1200bps, one telemetry packet every 30 seconds, operates in the dark by default (but can be commanded later to operate in sunlight as well) - 437.485 MHz: backup channel, 0.2W RF output, FM, PWM CW beacon, each beacon transmission lasts about 20 seconds then 60 seconds delay, only operates in sunlight More information and guide to download F-1 telemetry decoder can be found at http://fspace.edu.vn/?page_id=27. Decoded data can be submitted to us via the telemetry decoder or by sending to me directly (th...@fpt.edu.vn), audio records are highly appreciated. Wont work because there would be a 1000 ops calling 1 station, and field day is about contacting many stations but on staellites only 1 contact is needed for 300 points. Make the 1 contact and shut down your satellite station and let the rest of us have our 1 contact and shut down also. I hope the BIG GUN Satellite Stations will not use there amps to cut through the pile ups. I thing the satellite stations should not use any thing over 50 watts max on FM or better yet only use 5 watts and a hand held. After all Field Day is about emergency comm. and not blasting everyone out Thats my thoughts . I'm going to make sure that my audience knows that too. One hands-on activity that I came up with (and I was already contemplating letting someone else use the Arrow, maybe a repeat visitor who has already seen my song and dance) - I have printed some copies of the grid-square map, and I'm hoping the children especially mark their map during the passes as they hear the grid-squares. I was astounded by how many grids I heard on just ONE AO-27 pass on Wednesday! There are very few hams in the area where we're doing FD, which is one reason why we chose that location, to stir up interest. Philip N4HF On Fri, Jun 22, 2012 at 6:50 AM, Mark L. Hammond marklhamm...@gmail.comwrote: Hi Philip, Happy to hear you are getting active again! Great. One small precaution, based on personal experience during Field Day---be careful about creating expectations that can't be delivered...in other words, using the handheld system to listen to an FM bird is pretty easy, but on Field Day, it might be impossible to get a signal into the bird for a real contact. When I've done demos on Field Day, I warn my observers that it's going to be quite busy, and while we certainly will hear the bird, it's unlikely with 5 watts that I'll make a contact *today*. But letting them hear the busy bird gets them interested, and has led to invitations to give a presentation/demo at a local club meeting---which CAN more easily lead to making some contacts (especially if you announce the event here on the BBS. People will look for you specifically, in order to make your event successful). If you're going to have both the TS-2000x and the little radio, you could have somebody else waving it around to listen, while you operate the transmitter. It's fun to have audience participation! Not sure I'll be on the air on Field Day, due to work---but best wishes for a great day. Mark N8MH At 11:03 PM 6/21/2012 -0400, Philip Jenkins wrote: Thanks, Drew. I didn't realize AO-27's status, and I wasn't really looking forward to getting up in the middle of the night anyway :-) (although SO-50 has an excellent pass around 330 am :-) ) I did play around with AO-27 and SO-50 most of the day Wednesday, but yeah, I haven't really been active on the sats since a 1993 AO-13 DXpedition to VP2M. The reason I'm planning on using the HT and Arrow is to show them the (nearly) minimum equipment that can be used to work a sat - that they don't have to have a fancy radio (IC 910, IC-9100, TS-2000) and a big antenna array to work the birds. (I do have switchable CP yagis on 2M and 440 at home, with an az/el rotor, but transporting all that would be too much logistically AND I thought it would be overkill and too intimidating for an audience whom you're trying to attract into ham radio.) A solar flare will disrupt all HF and some satellites,While the flare is hitting the earth ,it can cause the VHF bands to open up .After the flare passes then the HF bands will be very active for F2 and maybe even some on 6 meters too - Original Message - From: Ted k7trkra...@charter.net To: wa4...@comcast.net Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 1:00:58 PM Subject: RE: [amsat-bb] ALERT Does that help HF? -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of wa4...@comcast.net Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 6:23 AM To: AMSAT Subject: [amsat-bb] ALERT INCOMING CME: Active sunspot 1401 erupted yesterday, Jan. 19th around 16:30 UT, producing an M3-class solar flare and a full-halo coronal mass ejection (CME). [amsat-bb] Re: Very Interesting Radio - Possible Sat Use (maybe not)
You get what you pay for.2 watts on a satellite would be tough to use and be heard anyway with all the big guns out there. But it still maybe good enough to use .Full duplex is not necessary if one knows how to use a HT. I have used the wouxoun 144/440 on the birds with great results. WA4HFN - Original Message - From: Geert Jan de Groot pe1...@amsat.org To: amsat-bb@amsat.org Sent: Friday, January 13, 2012 5:00:24 AM Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: Very Interesting Radio - Possible Sat Use (maybe not) I purchased an interesting radio that might be an inexpensive way to operate full duplex on the FM sats. The radio cost $65 including shipping and all accessories. It runs 2W on both 2M and 70cm. It has almost all the bells and whistles you would expect on a dual band handi. 99 memories - tone squelch ... http://www.tomdoyle.org/UV-X4.jpg There have been various postings and publications in QST and Funkamateur about the brother of this radio, the Baofeng UV-3R, and it's very poor harmonics filtering on the 2m band. Harmonic suppression was something like 15-20dB. I recently measured an UV-3R mark 1 (single frequency on display) and confirmed that the very poor filtering was indeed the case. Since these things transmit from 136 - 174 I tuned frequency a bit and found that suppression is OK at 165 MHz and above, and gets worse as the frequency goes down. On 136 MHz (on which I don't transmit except on a dummyload of course), I found that harmonic suppression was *negative* in some cases. Some of the publications confirm this, so my measurements are sound and it's not an incidental case. On request of the owner, I did the capacitor mod (adding a capacitor to the lowpass filter) and found that the suppression was still inacceptable. I purchased an UV-3R mark 2 (dual frequency on display) and established that while it was mark 2, the harmonic suppression was as poor as a Mark 1 radio. I have not voided the warranty yet on this radio to do the capacitor mod on the Mark2 radio, but I'm not hopeful. While some people claim that it may pass the specs because the Mk1 radio comes with separate antennas for VHF and UHF, the mark2 comes with a dualband antenna and for sat work, with an Arrow antenna or similar, harmonic attenuation of the antenna is nonexistant - we sat hams use good antennas! Mail sent to the manufacturer address in the manual on this issue remains unanswered. The Dutch regs specify '-36 dBm or -60 dBc, whichever is highest' and this radio doesn't even come close. FCC regs may be less tight, but I think our transmissions should be to the highest standards and frankly, this radio doesn't come close. My conclusion so far is that the thing may be good enough for listening, but when you want to transmit then this radio is only useful if your table tips and you need something to remedy that, but not for making QSO's. I have not measured the UV-X4 but have been told the internals are the same - the controls are in the same position, in any case. 73, Geert Jan PE1HZG PS: the separate charger does not have any protection circuitry in it and depends on the protection circuitry in the battary itself to charge (and protect) a dangerous LiIon cell. Personally I would not use this unless I have it in sight and a way to remove power quickly - these cells are temperamentful when overcharged, and the battary protection circuit is not intended to replace a correctly designed charger protection circuit.. ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org.
