[amsat-bb] Re: XW-1 0815 UTC over Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

2009-12-26 Thread Sangat Singh
Congratulations Sion,

Unfortunately I was not at the station to take advantage of HO-68
switched over Malaysia. Beacon can of course be heard from AOS to LOS
with KCT keeping the doppler adjusted properly.

2009/12/26 9w...@9w2qc.net 9w...@9w2qc.net:
 Dear All,

For the first time this morning (26th December 2009 at 0815 UTC, 45 Deg
Elevation), the linear transponder of XW-1 / HO-68 was turned on over Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia.  The transponder was sounding very well, with a couple of
high speed CW stations and JAs heard on SSB just after AOS.

Unfortunately, had too short a window to find my uplink and work the JAs.
After the JA window has passed, managed to have a nice contact with E21EJC.
As published, the linear transponder shut off at 0819 UTC, and after this
the following CW telemetry was recorded:

 http://www.9w2qc.net/amsatbb/HO68_1120MYT_45DEG.mp3

Great sounding satellite, and hope to see the linear/FM transponder
activated more often over this part of the region.  BTW, is there any
particular e-mail address (maybe from the control team) that we should use
 to send telemetry recordings to?

Would also like to wish all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2010.

 73,
 Sion Chow Q. C.,

2009-12-26 Thread Alan P. Biddle
A good question. Some people seem to get in effortlessly, others seldom if
at all. I fall into the seldom category, though I had better luck today.
Someone suggested that perhaps my dilithium crystals needed realignment, so
I pulled out my calibrated deviation meter, and verified the PL is set as
recommended for the FT-847 at 700 Hz. Next, I pulled out my counter with
GPS time base, and measured 66.961 Hz for the tone. I am pretty certain
that an accuracy of .06% should be good enough. ;)

I am wondering if it wants significantly more or less PL audio level. It
shouldn't be too hard to rig up an external injection when the operation is
more frequent. You have got to love satellite ops. Always something
interesting to consider!

OK so what is the trick to work the FM repeater on WX-1 ? Using TS-2000 and
set to :

Uplink: 145.8250 MHz FM, PL 67.0 Hz.
Downlink 435.6750 MHz FM
 I have no problem working
Linear Transponder.

I think that the whole problem is the sheer number of stations trying to get
into the bird at the same time... destructive interference occurs between
all the differently-phased PL tones, and NO ONE gets in most of the time.

I would love to see how much easier it would be to use with the tone turned
off. Either that, or leave it in linear mode all the time.

Thank's Alan for the schedule.
It 'very interesting see that the FM repeater and the linear transponder works
simultaneously.
I hope that the transmit power is equally distributed.

 Hi Alan,

XW-1 is extra-ordinary stable with its CW Beacon.

Using the current kepler set, I can set the filter of
my Kenwood TS2000 to 50Hz, and XW-1 stays nicely within
during the entire pass (15..20 minutes). Well done !

 This is just 55 seconds:

Nice recording although I think I'm hearing 60Hz hum. I shudder the think
what the Europe pass will be like later today. You are very disciplined on

Again, many thanks to our friends in China for this excellent Christmas

2009-12-21 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Hi,

I missed the transponder pass, but managed to catch the FM/BBS pass last
night. As others have said, it was a real kick. I had Wisp running, but
with TX off, and was able to see part of N8MH's connect efforts.
Fortunately the deviation of the packet downlink was not so high that it was
unbearable. Still, at some point I hope they will, at least for a test
period, separate out the voice and packet modes, as well as drop the PL if
possible on the packet.

A great new project. Congratulations to CAMSAT!

[amsat-bb] Re: XW-1 QSO and packet attempt

2009-12-20 Thread Sebastian
I think Drew (KO4MA) and I had the pleasure of completing the first QSO on the
FM repeater of XW-1 tonight from North America. Signals were extremely strong,
yet unfortunately very few stations were heard on the downlink.

Just seconds after Drew and I chatted, we heard/worked Jay (AA4FL), Rick
(WA4NVM) and John (K8YSE). Luc (VE2DWE) has some magic in his antennas, as I
consistently heard him pretty much all through the pass.

I heard Drew mention that perhaps due to the PL tone and the large number of
stations trying to use the repeater, very few stations were able to make a QSO.

The satellite rose from the south, and since I'm probably the southernmost USA
fixed station active on the birds, I had the opportunity to be in the right
place at the right time I guess.

All in all, XW-1 is a great addition to the ever growing fleet of ham radio
satellites, and I offer my thanks to all the hams in China who made it possible.

clear on all stations I heard.

I was able to get connected to the BBS, but unable to upload a small file. A

John K8YSE wrote: It could have been that the BBS stops the voice
repeater but there were times that VE2DWE was making it (although
noisy) and my signal was not there at all. Maybe the amount of
deviation on the tone makes a difference when there are a lot of
competing signals on the input.

As the bird sank low on the horizon on the way north, it was again
possible to get into it. Normally there are not many who get
into any satellite that is in northern Canada. Less congestion on
the input gives you a better chance.

I heard Drew mention that perhaps due to the PL tone and the large number of

 QSO.

Three problems: as with AO-51 the CTCSS tone is blocking a lot of station it
was the same when ISS cross band repeater was on too. When XW-
1 was over central USA his footprint was covering nearly all the Northern
continent including central america and the Carribean island with
all the Northern satellite station in the same footprint it should be a
challenge at the satellite receiver to have one station able to
make it through that's the second one and for the third one the packet BBS also
is competing at the receiver and i'm guessing at the
transceiver too as i never heard the packet transmission over a phone
transmission. Without any knowledge of the ways the transmitter is
voting or who's got the priority first it is hard to tell if this packet turn
over is not also a contributing factor as many of my
transmissions where shut down to just get a packet burst afterwards?

I missed the linear transponder but i'm guessing it will be The mode on XW-1
as per what i heard from the recordings.

It is a great sat and as i wrote a nice christmas gift with SO-67 as a
suggestion the FM/BBS mode can be put in service in light traffic
pass as it is permitting less traffic than the linear transponder, but it can
be an alternance of both. Let see what the european pass will
give as the whole europe will be in the same footprint!!!.

For the magic in my antennas there is none that i know but operating in full
duplex is a big help as you can choose when to key the TX but
as we cannot get a constant TX from the satellite we probably often transmit
over each other Letting the receiver only activated by the
carrier will at least make us hear through the capture effect and it will tell
us when it's time to TX? It will not solved the tailgating
problem but it will help.

P.S. There is also a trick on XW-1 as there was one on SO-67 i will have to
check it again but he's not much nicer than the one i discover
on SO-67 fighting against the 3 seconds timer... Just remember i wrote
fighting!

It is quite a nice christmas gift for the amateur satellite community who was
offered by China. XW-1 will make possible transatlantic
contacts when he will be over central atlantic ocean. In North America the
following grids will be in range for EU contacts: FM 27-28 FN
04-05-10-12. In my grid FN36 i will have a 5 deg elevation at max and it will
be lower for the grids i mentioned.

Congratulations Alan and for all of your team. You are the proof that our
amateur satellite future will be more and more internationally
driven XW-1 and SO-67 and all the other project in the making is and will only
lead and guided the next satellite builders to redefined
their next steps.

Is a new HEO capabilities can emerge? i believe yes and it will probably come
from unexpected new launchers sources.

The global world warming effect and the greenhouse gas effect will need new
measurement tools. A strong pressure will be put on ways to
measure those greenhouse gas and satellite will be the ultimate tool. It is a
new potential where amateur radio satellite builders can
exploit? At our local level here we use the emergency communication argument,
with this global warming potential disastrous consequences at
an international scale the amateur radio community will have to shift the usual
emergency communication focus towards emergency global
warming communications.

Satellite monitoring and international greenhouse gas space watch will
represent a lot of new openings. The amateur radio satellite world-
wide network is able to handle a lot of data downlinks, data who can be
transferred through internet at any point on the earth. APRS and
DPRS is already monitoring and sending weather reports from all over the world
is a pollution index can also be transmitted aside of all
the other weather data parameters? What about a PC screen showing the global
pollutants evolution on a day by day basis live data coming
and relayed by amateur radio satellite. The possibilities are endless will we
be able to positioned ourselves accordingly???

Some will say it is fiction but what's it's call fiction today often became
tomorrow reality.

2009-12-19 Thread George Henry
Each telemetry channel encodes a 3-character value. TTT represents a
telemetry value of 000, which would be normal for certain circumstances...
when the Channel 2 telemetry value is 000, it indicates that only the beacon
is operating (most of the time, for now). When the transponders are not
operating, it is normal for the telemetry channels associated with them (7 -
13) to read 000. The telemetry format can be found here:

Hope this helps!

Glad to hear you're trying an omni antenna. Was this in a rural or
urban area? Did you use a preamp with this?

Alan,

Tried on the 15.46 UTC pass on Dec 18th with the 67Hz PL but was unable to
trigger. Wonder if the FM xponder was on at that time. My ICOM 821H does not
have the CTCSS optional unit installed and I was using an application called
comtekk to inject the 67Hz tone from my PC using the acc socket in the

[amsat-bb] Re: XW-1 Schedule on Dec 19

2009-12-18 Thread P.H.
Hi Alan,

First of all I'd like to thank you and all those involved in the XW-1
project, so far it appears to have been very successful indeed.

Would it be possible when publishing schedules that you do it in a
similar format to that Jan-Albert uses for SO-67 ?

i.e. include the continent being covered. - I'm sure everyone would
find this helpful.

Example:

 Sat 19 Dec 2009
 00:06...Japan
 00:24...Australia
 01:43...Asia
 07:56...Europe

I don't wish to sound ungreatful for your hard work, just pointing out
how much easier it would be for everyone. If for some reason this
isn't possible, then I (and im sure others) won't be offended.

Thanks once again

 Dear All,

After a long time away from the satellites, I am pleased to report the
reception of XW-1 over Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Time was 1416 UTC to 1435 UTC and I had a maximum elevation of 68
degrees. Managed to copy the beacon on 435.790 CW +/- with a very
good signal of S9+. Tried to work the FM and Linear transponder, but
unfortunately could not get the downlink.

Is the transponder off during this pass? Time permitting, will try
out again 1.5 hours from now.

Congratulations to the China team for the very successful launch.

Is this correct that the higher mass satellite travels faster than the lower

OK, I'll revise my earlier question and suggest a reply.

The physically larger satellite will have more atmospheric drag which will
spiral it into a lower
orbit. The lower orbit, the higher the velocity and thereforeit crosses
your horizon earlier.

The influence of the drag force also depends on the mass since F=m*a,
so the same drag force will cause less deceleration on a heavier
satellite. You have to put this together with F=pressure*surface_area
to take both the size and the mass of the satellite into account.

By the way, is there any significant atmospheric drag at 1200 km
altitude?

I don't know but something is causing the two satellites to drift apart.
Knowing the rules helps to sort out the keplerian elements of the two.

Keep in mind they were in all likelihood deployed at different

Hi,

YAOGAN 8 traveling faster could be due to possible initial orbit

Had to follow down during the pass until TCA, then up again.
Used an additional - 2.1 kHz at TCA.
Keps may be a little off.

2009-12-15 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Just copied a nice pass over the eastern US. Signal was very loud. Using
Object A, USB, I had to tune down 1000 Hz. SATPC32 tracked the signal
throughout the entire pass with no manual tuning required. AOS and LOS
frequencies were the same, with TCA being about 200 HZ higher.

Attached are some software copied CW. The spacing was a bit odd, and some
of the strings of Ts are most like Os.

The high orbit will make this a good one to work if all the transponders
come up.

Congratulations,

Alan

If my numbers are correct, this bird is certainly much higher than AO-27 and
AO-51. At an orbit 800 miles above earth, this will stretch the footprint a
bit further east for those needing KH6 on the birds. Let's hope for more
activity from KH6!

 All,

I managed to operate the special event station BT3WX to work several
E2, BY, VR2, XX9 throughout the evening pass of XW-1 using the FM
transponder. It was the 1st test open of this bird's transponder.
 Everything works just great!

This is really exciting, Michael! We're delighted that the FM
transponder is working. With such a big footprint it will be a
remarkable experience for newcomers and oldtimers alike.

For my part, my QTH in Maritime (Eastern) Canada will have a 3 deg.
elevation view to the XW-1 at the same time that Moscow, Russia has a
3 deg. elevation view. Imagine that FM to FM!

Not quite yet. The Yaogan launch was from a different facility and on a
different vehicle. I have seen a few posts on space forums rumoring that
the launch may be next week sometime. It is supposed to launch on a
CZ-2C from Taiyuan.

I heard XW-1 will launch with HJ-1C by CZ-C2 launcher. If
 this is true,
 NASA Space Calender http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/calendar/calendar.html
shows its launch date is March 2010.

The IARU Amateur Satellite Frequency Coordination page for XW-1 says December
20.
http://www.amsat.org.uk/iaru/formal_detail.asp?serial=108

but dates of launches always seem to change.
I think we won't be certain of the launch date until it's actually in orbit.

Wow, this is shaping up to be a worthy successor to FO-29, whose orbit
is about 900 x 1300km if I remember correctly. 1200 is just great!

Moreover, with both FM and linear transponder on board, it will make
an excellent satellite to help people transition from FM to the linear
birds, since only one variable, the mode of the rig, will have to be
changed in one's setup.
