Just to expand on what others have said:

Cost seems comparable betwen a devphoneand a retailphoneat full

  technical question.

  Reasons for a devphone

-sim unlocked (some such as tmobile may? do that if you pay full
retail or eventually on a plan)
-can change linux and system libraries
  -can change pre-installed applications
-tmobile myfaves application sends periodic sms which costs money on
  any other network

Reasons for _not_ getting a devphone

-only one older devphonemodel generally available at present
-dev phones can't buy paid applications from the market (including
  your own)
-if you sell apps, you need to restrict yourself to the capabilities
of your users phones (and test on such a device!)
-various preinstalled proprietary applications missing (+/- depending
  on your interest)

The not being able to change preinstalled applications is in my mind
the least anticipated, and most annoying, problem. There are many
areas where very small decisions of questionable wisdom in default
applications really hamper the user experience (even in the using it
just to make calls sense), but these can't be very readily changed on
a retailphone, particularly the parts most closely involved in the
   telephone functionality.

As of this moment, I believe most of the retail phones are probably
still shipping with an easily rooted linux kernel, but that probably
will get closed up (already fixed in google's tree) and they will be
limited until another hole is found.

T-Mobile has not yet announced plans for Android 1.6 for any of their

 announcement.

I have seen no evidence that HTC makes firmware upgrades available
directly. They always handle that through whoever distributed the device
(e.g., T-Mobile for the T-Mobile myTouch3G version of the Magic). So, if
you got your device from your carrier, I would expect the carrier will
say when and how to upgrade it, assuming they support such an upgrade.

This is one of the many, many reasons why I hope Android spawns a robust
market for devices not tied to a carrier, where you get the device from
a device manufacturer and use it with a mobile carrier.

So if you get your phone SIM unlocked you should be well underway.
What I can not tell you is whether flashing new SPL and i.e. the Ion

and save you some €, but I suppose you have nothing to lose by trying.
But perhaps you should consult http://www.xda-developers.com/

 Whats a g2?

So far no android phone has enabled OTG support, and nobody has gotten
the 'magic bits' out of google/htc/qualcomm to enable it. (Its not
determinable what bits in which order need to be set.) If that info
becomes available, it will likely need a hardware hack (5V supply on
both sides) similar to what the Nokia 770/N800/N810 uses.

[android-beginners] Re: Screen pointer

2009-06-02 Thread Rafa Perfeito
Hamy,
Thanks, that was the type answer i was looking for...

Pretty ingenious, too.

 Rafa,

Just a thought - I have seen iPhone apps that use a little trick to
 help out with this:

Have the user place his finger on the screen at some location, say 0,0
 for example purposes.
Draw a crosshair at like 0,30, and actually use that as the drawing
 location.

The point is that your finger is no longer in the way of where you are
drawing, so it becomes slightly easier to draw in tight corners.

Give me your thoughts on this, please.

[android-beginners] Re: Prevent image stretching in backgrounds

2009-05-22 Thread Rafa Perfeito
Good one...
By the way, i've been trying to use setBackgroundDrawable() but when i
create the drawable i cant connect it with the respective file path. Can
someone post an example? Somehow i feel like im doing a really dumb
mistake...

Thanks

I'd like to use setBackgroundDrawable() to set a background, but

   the background color (from setBackgroundColor).

It goes nowhere. Don't use it. Use android.utils.Log for all your
logging needs, which will be available in logcat.

Actually, System.out and System.err should get redirected to the log
 file.

 See frameworks/base/core/java/com/android/internal/os/
 RuntimeInit.java, zygoteInit(), where it does:

System.setOut(new AndroidPrintStream(Log.INFO, System.out));
System.setErr(new AndroidPrintStream(Log.WARN, System.err));

The stdin/stdout/stderr file descriptors are redirected to /dev/null
during app framework startup, so a printf() from native code won't do
 anything.

The android.util.Log calls are preferred, since you can tag the
messages from your app and filter them.
