Funny, today I tried it again and it only showed its own logs. Yesterday,
it showed all logs which I verified by starting another app's Activity.

There is probably a bug somewhere where the permission is still granted
somehow.

[android-developers] Does it make sense to recycle views in a pager with not scrollable grid views?

2012-07-14 Thread user123

I'm wondering if it makes any sense to use recycling functionality in this
case: ViewPager, where each page is a fragment with a GridView, which fits
in the page (all items are visible, no scrolling).

The reason of the question is that I would like to switch between 2
different (similar) XMLs to inflate the items in the grid view. And, using
recycling, it's probably not possible. But I think recycling is not
necessary in this case.

[android-developers] Re: Forcing lower resolution drawables on phones with big screens and small RAM

2012-07-14 Thread Nobu Games
How many items are in your animation list? If it is really, really huge I'd
add some streaming logic to your animation player, so older frames get
recycled while future frames are loaded in the background. That way you
have absolute control over a moving window of frames and you could size
that window according to the available amount of free memory. You wouldn't
risk OOM crashes on any device with that technique.

Alternatively you could create a video based on your frames and play that
one back instead.

 state. I have an animation that I'm using a big list of drawables to
 display, and while it works fine on phones with enough RAM, I get VM out
 of memory crashes on devices with basically 512 MB RAM and below.

 I've found the getMemoryClass() function, which seems to report 32 for a
 device with 512MB. I tried overriding the density value, which
 successfully avoided the crash, but also resized my whole view! All I want
 is to be able to programmatically tell the view framework to default to the
 low-res images.  Is this possible?

I know they will - but what can we do? The navigation bar is already there.
Not having a menu is another option (our iPhone version use shake to show
menu), as other options you mentioned...we have tried.

1st option still take up space in canvas. The trigger part is interesting.
Tried shake but user does not like. Gesture will interfere with the
painting as the kids constantly use their fingers to draw stuffs, so you
can't be sure whether it is a dot or long press, a multitouch gestures (to
draw lines) or trying to execute a command.

Anyway, do you know whether it is possible to show Action Bar only on
tablet? That's the solution I am currently looking for.

[android-developers] Maybe I am going about this all wrong.

2012-07-14 Thread Cythes
Let me put an idea out there that I am thinking about in my head,

What are the odds of an app running all the time in the foreground only
minimized rather then as a service. Kinda like a clock or antivirus. I know
for a fact that these things can be done since you need to look no further
then (almost) any screen on your android to see the clock ticking away.
Still there is a physical app behind it. Something you can go to and view
in a bigger scale. That is all I am trying to accomplish.

Re: [android-developers] Showing Action Bar ONLY on tablet?

Put it there anyway.

 Anyway, do you know whether it is possible to show Action Bar only on
 tablet? That's the solution I am currently looking for.

Your solution is unsuitable for production apps. It may not work
reliably today. It will not work reliably in the future. You were
already told, personally, by a Google engineer, not to do this --
quoting Ms. Hackborn:

 The menu at the bottom is for compatibility with old applications. You
 should not be relying on it with new applications.

 Put an affordance somewhere in your UI to invoke this thing. The menu button
 is no longer a guaranteed affordance.

You even claim to have read what she wrote, as you replied to her message.

Many well-rated finger paint applications for Android, specifically
for use by very young kids, use on-screen controls, as you can tell
if you research your competition.

[android-developers] creating a progressbar programmatically

2012-07-14 Thread firebreather
i'd like to create a progressbar programmatically, that is not using a
layout file. my app uses no layout files and runs with the layout folder
deleted. all the progressbar examples i've seen involve a layout file,
including responces to this question by others on stack overflow? i don't
think the answerers knew what programatically meant. it means no layout
files.

That is not a good idea, but you are welcome to do so. Just do not

Mark, with all due respect, don't go this way. Don't succumb to the
arrogance of thinking you can design limtc's app for him.

I have experience with a broadly similar type of app as his. I can
tell you you can't always stuff controls to the screen, just because
someone somewhere at Google made an arbitrary decision to exclude
off-screen controls. Sometimes on-screen controls get in the way,
sometimes they break immersion, sometimes there is no good way left to
bring them up if you hide them (this probably happens more often than
you think) sometimes there are other reasons neither you nor I have
ever thought of.

There are work-arounds but they are just that - work-arounds.
Bringing up UI is a fundamental concept, especially on mobile
platforms where screens aren't big enough for keeping UI displayed all
the time. It serves nobody if one app has an on-screen button to
bring up UI, another does it via a shake and yet another uses an
obscure gesture because it uses every other possible option for
something else.

The Menu button was a uniform way to do something that 90% of apps
have or want to do. Now everybody has been left to their own devices.
 As I haven't ever heard pretty much *any* reason for that, good or
bad, I tend to think dumping it was rather a boneheaded idea.

 Your solution is unsuitable for production apps. It may not work
 reliably today. It will not work reliably in the future.

The final call on this hasn't been done for us yet, but I'm telling
you - if need be, I'd rather have an app that works (and sells) great
for a year on a current Android version and possibly deteriorates
afterwards, than something that's clumsy and counterintuitive from the
get-go but can keep up its clumsiness unchanged to Android 38.3 or
whatever the current version will be in 2035. I'd hate to have this
decision pushed onto me but that's what I'd prefer in that case.

My question is; What are tokens and how do you create them? Does the server
create my token or who? I know that for the Facebook API Facebook makes the
token for you. So does every token creation work like that?

Hi,
thanks for your reply.
I know you are right and R class should be autogenerated, but it doesn't.
The gen folder is empty.

 Google for R cannot be resolved into a variable, there is a lot of

[android-developers] Wifi Only tablet missing NetworkProvider

2012-07-14 Thread RE
I bought this wifi-only inexpensive tablet (see the build.props below). It
has a fully operational wifi to get on the network and do what one would
expect. I wrote a bit of code to explore what location providers were
available on the tablet. According to the responses, the only available was
GPS_PROVIDER. However, I have never gotten a GPS fix. The tablet is Android
4.0.3. I ran the same code on my cell phone (Android latest 2.3) and it
worked as expected when the cell service was disabled. It showed location
and gps. I turned off gps and it just showed location.

Why is there no network_provider available on this tablet? Is there a
plugin/driver that is missing? I thought network_provider worked via the
network only (Wifi - i.e.: firefox on laptops). Since it is an inexpensive
tablet, why would it come with an additional radio for GPS and not support
a feature for the radio it advertises (Wifi)? Is there something I am
missing with regards to Wifi-Only tablets? Is it the ROM? This tablet is
from China (HK) perhaps it's disabled for export? I bought this thing
specifically to write a location based app without using my phone.

Thanks,
E

[android-developers] Different Screen Sizes and Resolutions

2012-07-14 Thread Bradx
Hey guys!

I am a new developer, and I have been working on my app the past week or
so. So far I have it looking good and working fine, but my employer wants
me to make it run on screen sizes from normal to xlarge and densities from
medium to xhigh. I found a document on the developer's website about this,
but it said that I should have different pictures and layouts if I want to
do it right.

I know it said that the phone will scale it up or down depending on what it
can support, but it didn't suggest that because of artifacts forming, which
I don't know what those are.

So, I was wondering if you all could help me out a bit, and lead me in the
right direction. I want to do some of the work, just so I can learn, but a
little help is nice every now and then.

Thanks!

- Brad

[android-developers] Before I start, a question regarding google maps traffic

2012-07-14 Thread CreepyD
I hope someone can help here.
I have an app idea, but want to know if it's possible before I spend lots
of time learning how to make apps.

Is it possible to 'plug-in' to google maps traffic based on a specific map
point?
e.g. If I want to check what the current traffic is at an exact point along
a road? (using code, not looking at the map manually).
So it would simply tell me if it was green/yellow/red etc right now based
on the position I gave it to look up.

Or is the traffic information literally just an 'overlay' that I can't
interact with with code?

If nobody knows, where would I find this information? Google doesn't seem
to have the answer.

Thanks!

[android-developers] Cheapo Chinese tablet missing NetworkProvider

2012-07-14 Thread RE

I wrote some code to discover the location providers available. I ran the
code on my phone (with cell off, gps off, and wifi on). It found the
NetworkProvider. Turning on GPS it found them both. (cell is v2.3.3)

So I thought that NetworkProvider would be valid for anything that has WiFi
or network connections. However, I noticed that the cheapo $100 tablet
(from China based on the build.props file) doesn't have NetworkProvider. I
understand if NetworkProvider is there, all we need is a network
connection. However, it reports that the GPS exists, but it's never
reported a fix. I understand that GPS requires a different radio, and if
they're as cheapo as they say, why include a GPS chip and not enable
NetworkProvider considering that they already have wifi built in. (tablet
is v.4.0.3)

[android-developers] Re: adk 2012 / usb accessory not connecting

2012-07-14 Thread Doug
Joe,

Well, the first thing that irked me was the fact that the board needs a USB
driver installed, or OSX won't even recognize the board's presence. This
was documented nowhere. I had to hunt it down myself.

No problems with Java here. The IDE launches fine and I can load source
files into it. It just couldn't compile the clock sample out of the box.
It could never find the first ADK include. It's been a while, so I don't
remember those details off the top of my head. I did have the board
selected in the menu, but I can't imagine that would make much of a
difference because the IDE is special for that board. On the ADK web site
there is installation step which made no sense to me:

Copy the adk-source-download/adk2012/board/library/ADK2 directory and its
contents into your sketchbook/libraries/ directory, so that you create a
sketchbook/libraries/ADK2 directory.

I didn't see anything at all about a sketchbook/libraries directory in the
real world. I'm assuming this step was meant to get the ADK libs into a
place where they will be used by the clock demo or whatever program you're
writing. I tried to make up a bunch of possible locations to put these
files, but no dice. Maybe they are assuming the reader has prior Arduino
experience, which I do not. I was eventually able to get the clock demo to
compile, but after deployment it locked up the hardware. I think it wasn't
actually building the ADK libs with the sample code.

So I switched to the command line tools. On the command line (using the
git source repo), when trying to build and deploy it told me I needed
bossac and gave me a url to find it. So I went and got it, but the OSX
exe never once recognized the board. The bossac exe that comes with the
IDE does work, however, so I wedged that one into the command line build
process. The command line build still had troubles finding the ADK headers
and sourced needed to build, so I had to copy all those manually into the
clock demo source tree, then I was finally able to build and deploy.

I'm on OSX Lion on a Mac Mini if that makes any difference.

Doug

On Tuesday, July 10, 2012 12:07:00 PM UTC-7, Joe wrote:

 Hey Doug,

 What problems did you run into using the Mac IDE for the ADK2? I just
 finished installing the ADK IDE and managed to upload the clock sketch. I'm
 using a Mac Air with OS X v10.6.8.

 Couple of things I found that were a little tricky:

1. For some reason, my Mac's Java installation got hosed recently and
I had to update to Java 1.6.0_33. After the update my Arduino IDEs (along
with the ADK 2012 IDE) started working again. Prior to that update, I
couldn't even get the IDE to run, error: No compatible version of Java
1.5*
2. Make sure to you plug into the Computer micro USB port (not the
Phone port)
3. Choose the correct serial port in the IDE, *Tools Serial Port* (my
Mac Air gave me 6 options) the correct port was
 /dev/tty.usbserial-XXX
4. Choose the board *Tools Board Google ADK2*, otherwise the
sketch won't even compile.

 On Wednesday, July 4, 2012 11:39:29 PM UTC-7, Doug wrote:

 This isn't the right place for ADK discussion, but as far as I can tell,
 there is no place set aside for it!

 I killed a lot of today trying to get the 2012 ADK to work and was mostly
 frustrated. I'm on a Mac and I found the IDE installation instructions
 very much do not work and I could not manipulate it into building and
 flashing a working image at all.

 On the command line, I had to jump through hurdles to get the clock demo
 to build and deploy. In the end, I could not get recommended bossac
 downloaded from sourceforge to work at all. Eventually I had to bypass the
 given scripts and reached into the Mac IDE app package to use its bossac to
 deploy a working image.

 All things considered, I'm very disappointed in the usability of the
 tools that were provided for the 2012 ADK (at least for macosx) and I wish
 I knew where to go to remedy this. Otherwise I pretty much give up now.

 recognized as an appropriate usbaccessory, but it doesn't and nexus reports

 Another question, how can I run adb from my android device while it is
 simultaneously connected to my arduino kit? I was optimistic that it would
 channel through the arduino and proxy to my pc, but that clearly isn't
 happening :) ... ADB over bluetooth?

2012-07-14 Thread Matthew Whitmer
You can create an Android library project which contains both resources and
code. They have been improving this capability with each update it seems.
 To see what you can currently do with a library project check out the
appropriate section on this page:

[android-developers] Re: Programatically setting Linear Layout parameters i.e. Wrap_content and match parent

2012-07-14 Thread marcpolo
Didn't realise that you can simply replace WRAP_CONTENT with a fixed width.
Problem solved.

On Wednesday, 11 July 2012 20:24:31 UTC+1, marcpolo wrote:

 Hi,

 I'd like to have two views within a horizontal linear layout and
 programatically align them as follows.

 View A should be of fixed width on the left hand side and View B should
 fill the remainder of the space. I tried setting the following layout
 parameters

 ViewA.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams(LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT,
 LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT, 0));
 ViewB.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams(LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT,
 LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT, 1));

 Whenever I set the weight of ViewA to 0, only ViewA is displayed. I
 expected a value of 0 to mean that ViewA doesn't get stretched.

 When I set ViewA::Weight = 4, and ViewB::Weight = 1, ViewA is a quarter of
 the size of ViewB. I expected the reverse.

 WRAP_CONTENT seems to have no effect.

 This seems straightforward when using the manifest file, however I am
 modifying existing code that requires me to set these values
 programatically. Could someone help me.

 Thanks in advance.

[android-developers] Jelly Bean Crash with Bitmap Recycle Sorry, an error has occurred: bitmap is recycled

2012-07-14 Thread Craigo
Hi Google,

My app that has been running for over 2 years without an update, finally
broke with Jelly Bean. The error: Sorry, an error has occurred: bitmap is
recycled.

The problem was with calling recycle on a bitmap:

Bitmap bitmapOld = bitmap;
bitmap = Bitmap.createScaledBitmap(bitmap, newWidth, newHeight, false);
bitmapOld.recycle();

Note: I never referenced bitmapOld again.

The fix was easy, I just don't recycle any more. However, it seems odd
that this would have broken. Maybe creating the scaled bitmap shares
memory with the unscaled bitmap?

Anyway, hopefully this information is useful to someone.

Cheers, and keep up the excellent work!

Re: [android-developers] Re: static vs non-static inner classes

2012-07-14 Thread Michael Rozumyanskiy
But what about a Handler.Callback interface which can be passed to the
Handler's constructor. According to the source code it is stored in the
Handler class as a strong reference, so if the Message lives in the queue
for a long time, the callback will not be gc'ed. And the callback may be an
Activity or an inner class of an activity. But I can't see any checks in
the source code and any recommendations in the documentation. As far as I
understand, there isn't any right way to use the Handler.Callback with the
Handler, is there?

On Saturday, April 4, 2009 9:52:06 PM UTC+4, Romain Guy wrote:

 I wrote that debugging code because of a couple of memory leaks I
 found in the Android codebase. Like you said, a Message has a
 reference to the Handler which, when it's inner and non-static, has a
 reference to the outer this (an Activity for instance.) If the Message
 lives in the queue for a long time, which happens fairly easily when
 posting a delayed message for instance, you keep a reference to the
 Activity and leak all the views and resources. It gets even worse
 when you obtain a Message and don't post it right away but keep it
 somewhere (for instance in a static structure) for later use.

 If you want to use the equivalent of an inner-class but not risk a
 leak, here's a simple pattern:

 class OuterClass {
   class InnerClass {
 private final WeakReferenceOuterClass mTarget;

 InnerClass(OuterClass target) {
   mTarget = new WeakReferenceOuterClass(target);
 }

 void doSomething() {
   OuterClass target = mTarget.get();
   if (target != null) target.do();
 }
   }
 }

  across this bit of internal Android debugging:

 /*
  * Set this flag to true to detect anonymous, local or member

  * that extend this Handler class and that are not static. These
  kind
  * of classes can potentially create leaks.

 private static final boolean FIND_POTENTIAL_LEAKS = false;

  There is some code further down that uses reflection to locate such
  subclasses if this flag is true.

  My handlers fall into the category of non-static member classes, so I
  am curious how such classes could cause a memory leak. My initial
  thinking was that handlers could perhaps accumulate in a collection
  associated with the MessageQueue. But handlers are never placed into
  collections, as far as I can tell. The reference to the handler is in
  the message. Clever! (And in any case if the memory leak is due to an
  ever-growing collection of handlers somewhere then that has nothing to
  do with whether or not the handler class is static or not.)

  Just wondering if someone can shed some light on this comment in the
  Android source code.

  There's no real difference between explicitly and implicitly passing

  Staticinner classes have some useful properties, e.g. you know

  If you're really curious, write it both ways in trivial source files,

[android-developers] Handler.sendEmptyMessageDelayed() unreliable on some versions of OS?

2012-07-14 Thread mapeters
I have a thread (guts implemented as a subclass of Runnable) whose job is
to perform an operation on demand from other threads or automatically every
two minutes if no other thread invokes the operation. The run() method of
this Runnable calls Looper.prepare(), creates a Handler object in a member
variable, uses that to call sendEmptyMessageDelayed(1, 3000), then calls
Looper.loop().

Other threads use a method in this thread's public API to invoke its
operation. That method just calls the handler's sendEmptyMessage(0) method
to invoke it. When the handler's handleMessage(Message) method is called,
it acquires a lock (ReentrantLock), calls the handler's
removeCallbacksAndMessages(null) method and performs its operation (within
a try/catch block). The finally section of that block calls the handler's
sendEmptyMessageDelayed(1, 12) method then releases the lock.

This works fine on every device I have tested it on, and by everything I
know, it is a valid way to do this that ought to work on every version of
Android OS. Recently, however, somebody claimed it wasn't running every two
minutes as it should, and gave me the log file it produces to prove it
(which it does). That log shows that sendEmptyMessageDelayed(1, 12) was
called, and then 11 minutes later, the handleMessage(Message) method was
called. I know this invocation of handleMessage() was in response to that
sendEmptyMessageDelayed(1, 12) call because Message.what was 1 (a value
used only by the sendEmptyMessageDelayed() call).

How is this possible? I could understand the timing being off by a few
seconds, but 11 minutes? In subsequent attempts to reproduce this, I have
seen that timing being off by 45 minutes and more. This problem has been
observed on an HTC One X running Android 4.0.3 and a Samsung Galaxy SII
running OS 2.3.6.

Has anybody else seen this issue? Does anybody have a suggestion for what
might be causing this? My current position is that this is an OS bug, but I
am loathe to just accept that and call it a day. BTW - just for kicks, I
temporarily re-implemented this using a Timer object instead, and observed
exactly the same problem (using Handler is a better solution anyway).

Thanks,

Mark Peters

[android-developers] Run application with system / root permissions.

2012-07-14 Thread Jordi Sayeras
Hi,

I've been searching about this topic but I haven't found a clear solution
yet. As far as I know, you can specify different *protectionLevel* in your *
AndroidManifest.xml*, those permissions allow other applications to
interact with the one you are developing. As an example, imagine that I
want to kill a processes, that is not mine (from another package) or that I
want to install a driver I've developed. In both cases the problem is the
same, those things need to be run as a system / root. How can I develop
programs that require system / root permissions, do I need an special
license?

*Note:* Please, note that granting the permission:

*uses-permission
android:name=android.permission.KILL_BACKGROUND_PROCESSES/*

Using *android:sharedUserId=android.uid.system* does not work either.

Also, consider that I cannot ask the users to have their mobiles rooted.

Thanks in advance.

Jordi.

me just the declaration.

Unfortunately I don't have a full setup to view the full call stack and
find out myself. Could any one point me where such objects are created? Is
there some code that is not part of the SDK that could be instantiating
them?

Thanks in advance,

There's no documented, approved way to read the log entries.

Having said that, if you just exec() logcat, as you did before, you'll

which log entries belong to others, and will only give you your log

[android-developers] Where to start?

I'm trying to put together a fairly simple application, but I'm getting a

Basically I have a Java application running on a server, which sends out
and responds to JSON messages over sockets.

The app needs to be able to send messages to the server, and also be
listening for update messages to update the gui accordingly.

Would the best way to do this to make a Service which handles a socket to
the server?

I assume the server would need a separate thread for reading from the
socket.

If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome.

Cheers,
Mitch

[android-developers] How to stop terminate the Android application when using the native code

2012-07-14 Thread Clark kent
Hello every body

I have this problem which can not resolve it.

I'm calling the native code(*C code*) from the android application. But in
the native code, they call function *exit(0)* so it makes the app on
Android terminate. Could any one know how to stop this one, because after i
called one method from native code , after it finished, it will terminate
the Android application.

I found a way is disable the method *exit(0)*, so it will not terminate
the Android app, but it meet error when i called the native method second
time, some error kind like this: *Invalid heap address in internal_realloc*.
I think that came from the re allocation the memory. So if any one know how
to free all memory of native call, please let me know. Thanks for any
comments

Thanks

Clark

Some of my users are experiencing the same issue. My suspicion is that the

they *did* give device manufacturers the freedom to skip off-screen
controls.

Now, if all finger paint apps for children on Android got low ratings
and had on-screen controls, I would at least entertain the notion that
correlation might indicate causality, and the on-screen controls were
the source of the low ratings. However, a quick glance at the search
results and examining the screenshots indicate that there are several
finger paint apps for children with on-screen controls *and* 4-star
ratings (and on 1000+ ratings, not just a handful). To claim that
on-screen controls are somehow impractical for finger paint
applications for children, therefore, seems to be inaccurate, and
creating an intentionally future-resistant finger paint application
for children just to avoid on-screen controls is not wise.

Furthermore, it is ludicrous to think that a child will somehow tap on
some on-screen control, yet not tap on a menu affordance in the system
bar nor click on a dedicated off-screen MENU button. If anything, a
well-designed on-screen control could be *less likely* to be
accidentally invoked than would legacy menu affordances, by making it
slightly more challenging to trigger than just a tap (e.g., physically
smaller, tap-and-hold, tap-and-slide). While it is impossible to
prevent a child from doing any of these things, you actually have
control over an on-screen mechanism that you do not have for anything
else and therefore can take steps to reduce the odds.

If the issue is aesthetics, make the on-screen control invisible,
perhaps appearing after a period of inactivity or after the screen has
turned off and back on. You could even make the on-screen control
simply be not there except after inactivity or a screen off/on cycle,
so that a parent can readily get to the control after retrieving the
device from the child. Or find other ways of solving the problems
formerly handled by an in-app menu (e.g., auto-save after inactivity,
so the parent does not need to explicitly save from the paint activity
but can go into a separate activity to review saved pictures and
remove them).

And so on.

Now, I cannot speak for your app, because I don't know what it is.
Perhaps you could consider submitting it for the developer relations
Friday App Review thing, specifically asking for ideas for how to
address your variant on this issue, and try to get Googly input on the
matter that way.

Who's to say how many 4-star ratings / downloads would a finger paint
app have that didn't have to clutter the screen? Sadly, Android has a
reputation for low-quality apps. People will sometimes give a good
rating just because an app to do such and such exists, no matter how
badly it does it.

Giving the user a good feeling about using a device/app is a very
tricky area. I worked for the official games industry for 7 years and
I saw the attention these guys tend to give controls. While not every
little Android app has to be as fine tuned as a twitch shooter, every
app should feel good - something Apple is famous for understanding.
You can't say that a painting app is good enough just because there
are still a bunch of pixels left for the actual painting after we've
rendered our UIs.

 and creating an intentionally future-resistant finger paint application
 for children just to avoid on-screen controls is not wise.

Again, that's for people who design/make a particular app to decide.
Very very few apps released this month will still get new downloads a
year from now, at least in entertainment which is what I'm interested
in, so risking that an OS version 3 years from now will break the app
might be a very sound business decision if the risk brings in
substantial benefits during the projected life cycle of the app.

 Furthermore, it is ludicrous to think that a child will somehow tap on

You might well be right on this, however the decision to leave out the
Menu button is of a much much broader consequence than just finger
paint apps for children. There are apps for which an off-screen
button is just *the* simple and natural solution, everything else is
kludgy work-around. If there were no such apps at the moment, they
would appear in the future.

Saying no Menu button should be enough for everyone reminds a
similar well-known statement that concerned 640kB of memory -
supporting such claims you run an acute risk of getting on the wrong
side of history. :-)

 If the issue is aesthetics, make the on-screen control invisible,
 perhaps appearing after a period of inactivity or after the screen has

This all depends strongly on the actual application. Based on my
experience, you can't make any blanket statements like this. As stated
above, this is not just about kids' paint apps - it's not even just
about paint apps in general, although if you consider something like a
simplified Photoshop in your phone, you start seeing immediately that
none of what you propose would work.

Although I'm no artist by profession, I took drawing/painting classes
for couple of years and I can draw, sort of - and my bro is an artist.
 I can tell you a painting app that kept UI stuck on-screen all the
time would likely be a no-go. The canvas belongs to the artist, it's
just ridiculous to make people paint around your UI. Also, when
you're looking at what you've done so far, any UI would be annoying as
hell. (I sat for some weeks next to concept artists a while ago (oh

createScaledBitmap() can return the *same* bitmap if the scaled copy would
have the same dimensions as the original image. The proper way to do this
is to write:

bitmap = Bitmap.createdScaledBitmap(oldBitmap, etc...);
if (bitmap != oldBitmap) oldBitmap.recycle();

 Hi Google,

 My app that has been running for over 2 years without an update, finally
 broke with Jelly Bean. The error: Sorry, an error has occurred: bitmap is
 recycled.

 The problem was with calling recycle on a bitmap:

 Bitmap bitmapOld = bitmap;
 bitmap = Bitmap.createScaledBitmap(bitmap, newWidth, newHeight, false);
 bitmapOld.recycle();

[android-developers] Keeping it fresh, back to service...

2012-07-14 Thread Cythes
Alright here I am after a good 8 hours of editing (Yeah I'm new..so sue
me...) I'm working on this service that starts on start up. Keep in mind I
am on my live phone so I DONT have logcat. On top of this it is a Rooted
phone so if that changes anything then I guess I will burn that bridge
after I cross it. Till then I could use a hand.

Here is the service code..once again:

import android.app.Service;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.net.Uri;
import android.os.IBinder;
import android.os.Vibrator;
import android.util.Log;
import android.view.KeyEvent;
import android.widget.Toast;

public class Monitor extends Service {

private static final String LOG_TAG = ::Monitor;

@Override
public void onCreate() {
super.onCreate();
Log.e(LOG_TAG, Service created.);
}

public void onStartCommand() {
Log.e(LOG_TAG, Service started.);
Toast.makeText(this, Test launch started, 600).show();
}
boolean dispatchKeyEventTake2(KeyEvent event) {
int action = event.getAction();
int keyCode = event.getKeyCode();
int ticker = event.getRepeatCount();
final Vibrator vibrator = (Vibrator) getSystemService(VIBRATOR_SERVICE);
switch (keyCode) {
case KeyEvent.KEYCODE_VOLUME_DOWN:
if (action == KeyEvent.ACTION_DOWN  ticker == 50) {
Intent MainIntent = new Intent(help.me.please.MainActivity);
MainIntent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
startActivity(MainIntent);
}
return true;
default:
return this.dispatchKeyEventTake2(event);
}
}

@Override
public IBinder onBind(Intent intent) {
Log.e(LOG_TAG, Service bind.);
return null;
}
}

As well as the manifest:
manifest xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;
installlocation=internalOnly
package=help.me.please
android:versionCode=1
android:versionName=1.0

uses-sdk
android:minSdkVersion=9
android:targetSdkVersion=15 /

uses-permission
android:name=android.permission.RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED /
uses-permission android:name=android.permission.VIBRATE /
uses-permission android:name=android.permission.CALL_PHONE /

application
android:icon=@drawable/ic_launcher
android:label=@string/app_name
android:theme=@style/AppTheme
service android:name=.Monitor
intent-filter
action android:name=help.me.please.Monitor
/action
/intent-filter
/service

activity
android:name=.MainActivity
android:label=@string/title_activity_main
intent-filter
action android:name=android.intent.action.MAIN /

category android:name=android.intent.category.DEFAULT /
/intent-filter
/activity

receiver android:name=autoBot
intent-filter
action android:name=android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED

/action
/intent-filter
/receiver
/application

/manifest

Basically the program runs starts the service but wont start the intent in
the service. Any ideas?
