[android-developers] Re: Grid view with proportional images?

2013-03-19 Thread user123
Thanks for your help, but I think you have no idea - how else would you
organize the views inside cells? You maybe have worked with list view? What
do you use there for the rows?

And I prefer not having to scale the bitmaps.

Am Montag, 18. März 2013 22:17:18 UTC+1 schrieb bob:

 I've never used GridView, but that sounds fishy using a LinearLayout for
 each cell.

 Why not just use wrap_content, wrap_content for the ImageViews and scale
 all bitmaps using this:

 public static Bitmap *createScaledBitmap* (Bitmap src, int dstWidth, int
 dstHeight, boolean filter)
 Added in API level 1
 Creates a new bitmap, scaled from an existing bitmap, when possible. If
 the specified width and height are the same as the current width and height
 of the source btimap, the source bitmap is returned and now new bitmap is
 created.
 Parameters
 src
 The source bitmap.
 dstWidth
 The new bitmap's desired width.
 dstHeight
 The new bitmap's desired height.
 filter
 true if the source should be filtered.
 Returns
 The new scaled bitmap or the source bitmap if no scaling is required.

 I 4 - colums grid where the items are an image on top and bellow a

 anything.

 My images will all have exactly the same size.

 Now I want that the height of the view adjusts to the width - to keep
 the images proportional. AFAIK this is not possible with Android's
 scaling
 types. So I put this code after I load the bitmap (it's feched from the
 web):

 imageView.post(new Runnable() {
 @Override
 public void run() {
 double factor = loadedBitmap.getWidth() /
 (loadedBitmap.getHeight());

 int width = imageView.getWidth();

 int newH = (int)(width * factor);
 LinearLayout.LayoutParams params = new
 LinearLayout.LayoutParams(width, newH);
 imageView.setLayoutParams(params);
 //convertViewFinal.invalidate(); //doesn't
 help
 //convertViewFinal.requestLayout(); //doesn't
 help
 }
 });

 It works for most of the images, but on some, it doesn't show any
 image (the imageview looks like GONE), and in some cases this also
 breaks
 the grid layout. Why is it? I know that the bitmaps are fine, because,
 in
 my testing application, I loop through the same bitmaps many times -
 they
 appear after x items in the grid again, and they are fine. And each time
 I
 load the grid, different items have the problem.

Yeah, it's definitely configured in the NDK Friendly way, as you say.
I basically just installed the NDK (back then) per the docs, right beside
the SDK under ~/Android, and included the jni directory in the project's
top-level.  Frankly, I didn't even know there's another way (and don't
know or care what that would be---it's easier to just do it the right
way, IMHO).  :-)

 You have two options:

 1. Create an ANT script that simply calls the ndk-build executable. For
 example:

 2. Configure an External Tool in intellij. Here's an example:
 http://cl.ly/image/3n020g1S1v1H

I'm not really interested in whether or not IntelliJ does the builds
for the JNI stuff, just debugging (preferably, as I mentioned, including
the OpenCV stuff, which is 99% of the JNI code so far). I'd LOVE to have
code completion, lint, etc., for that.

I do the NDK builds by hand anyways. Then I have an extra script that
copies the OpenCV libs back, since the NDK build seems to always want
to rm them. From what I've gathered, I could probably just put that
extra bit into a script in IntelliJ, and probably will...eventually.
Right now, I've barely scratched the surface, and have a LOT of RTFM
time to put in (or maybe it's simple enough that I don't ... we shall
see).

 As for the OpenCV question (assuming you're referring to the fact that this
 is C++) then this is where intellij falls down a little. I have a similar
 issue with Box2D and my solution is to run a separate eclipse for this, but
 the eclipse is a pure CDT flavor.

Yuck. No, ultimately, I only want one of the two in use. My brain
(since my first cancer) has enough trouble with one I'm also, btw,
hoping the editor in IntelliJ is better (no, please, no comp.editors
style wars here! ... this is just my opinion) than the one in Eclipse
(which had me doing the edits in gvim, and then syncing from Eclipse).

 If you ONLY run CDT (and download the

I should probably already know this, and I'm probably using it and just
not recognizing it by name, but what is CDT?

 work.. then don't, random crashes etc etc... but I just can't take it
 anymore.

 This latest version of eclipse (Juno Service Release 2 Build id:

 I love eclipse, but enough is enough.

 So.. is intellij for Android development a realistic option? Obviously
 Google make plugins for eclipse so this is always going to be the first

 from eclipse to intellij *specifically for Android work* please let me

 I also do a reasonable amount in C++ using the CDT (which is a whole other
 source of issues) and I understand that this is not a strong point for
 intellij (?)

 I really wish the folks at eclipse (whoever they are) would stop trying to
 build features and just make the darn thing stable... I mean 10 years..

http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screen-compat-mode.html

There are many different options to set up in the manifest, to make it
possible, to the user, to enable compatibility mode. This is not exactly
what I want, but anyways, maybe worth to mention, these options didn't
work. I couldn't find anything on the device to switch to compatibility
mode. I used a Nexus 7 with 4.2.

Now there's the part which I need - and I also can't get it to work. To
force compatibility mode, it I have to use this element:

supports-screens android:largestWidthLimitDp=320 /

When I let the value 320 there, my Galaxy Nexus smartphone goes in
compatibility mode. That is unwanted.
The Nexus 7 also does, this is good.
So I have to use bigger dp - But starting at 321, for some reason I don't
understand, the Nexus 7 doesn't go anymore in compatibility mode.

Is this normal? According to what I read the dp of the shortest side of the
Nexus 7 is more than 500, why then it stops on 321?

I would let it on 320, but I have optimized layouts for this screen size and
don't want these to go in compatibility mode.

Thanks.

I did. I changed some stuff to avoid out of memory errors --just for debug

the exception is thrown anyway. It seems like something outside my code is

 http://developer.android.com/tools/help/gltracer.html

 The tracer seems to load fine, and when I put in the package and activity

 Tracer says that it's tracing. However, the size always stays at 0MB and
 the trace file remains at 0 bytes. Occasionally I'll see a socket write

 Collect Framebuffer contents on glDraw*(), then I always see a
 Connection reset by peer: socket write error error message.

 I'd really like to get this to work. I played around with different
 settings in the Developer options to no avail. I even tried on OS X in case
 it was a Windows issue, and I had the same problems there.

 Thanks!

I checked once again. There were a couple of recycle() that I didn't find
the first time I searched --my Eclipse sometimes lacks of memory for this
kind of tasks, it seems. I searched for the call among my files with
another app, and find the culprit on the onPause() of one of de Fragments.
Thanks!

At least in headers, compressing data may be possible if what you're doing
is file oriented. Still many cases of this scenario aren't amenable to
compression...

What kind of data are you sending?

[android-developers] Making my app the only one that can run.

2013-03-19 Thread Tobiah

I'm not being unfriendly to users. I need to hand out
devices at an event so that people can walk around and
use my app. I don't want them to use other apps on the
phone.

So I put this in my AndroidManifest.xml:

intent-filter
action android:name=android.intent.action.MAIN /
category android:name=android.intent.category.LAUNCHER /
category android:name=android.intent.category.HOME /
category android:name=android.intent.category.DEFAULT /
/intent-filter

Then I get a choice of launchers from the home button. I choose my app
'Always' and everything
is great. The only problem is that if I reboot the device,
my app indeed comes up as the home screen, but it immediately crashes.
Is there some event or Intent I need to handle to do this? I can't figure
out how to debug this, because there are no logcat events, and when
I restart my app it works fine.

Also if there are any other thoughts on how to make a one app device,
I'd love to have suggestions.

Thanks!

Tobiah

[android-developers] Http Post failing on only one phone

2013-03-19 Thread g...@deanblakely.com

The code pasted below has been successfully tested on several phones
running Gingerbread, ICS, and Jelly Bean. However when testing on a
friends Samsung 4GLTE model SCH-1200 (verison) the code fails.
The post throws an exception and in the Catch, the log throws a null

I examined the contents of the myPost and it all looks valid.

What could be wrong with this phone? Could the owner have something turned
off that might cause this? The phone is not in airplane mode

[android-developers] Concurrency: Do you use Loaders? AsyncTask? or Runnables?

Android concurrency has always bugged me...

These are all methods to achieve essentially the same thing: mutli-threading

*I honestly don't see much difference between them*, except the amount of
code you need to write..

Which methods do you use?

Are there certain situations where you prefer one method over the other?

Or do you stick to one method and use it as a rule-of-thumb?

Thanks for reading.

Java: WORA.

The text files can differ in that Mac and Windows have different line-end
conventions.

Your source-code repository should manage that transparently for you. The
system should
ignore the differences anyway.

Make sure all XML and Java source (and really all text files) are encoded
in UTF-8.
This is easy with an Eclipse setting.

(Obviously the XML %xml... processing directive must specify the same
encoding as
the XML file.)

Bytecode is bytecode. APKs are APKs, and their compatibility is with
Android devices,
not Windows or Mac.

They really are fairly different. Loaders are managed AsyncTasks.
 AsyncTasks are (pretty much) managed Runnables. Use loaders if you can.

Where? What exception? What is the exact (copied and pasted!) message?

The log call actually shouldn't throw any exception. But since you don't
show us the exception
message it's really, really hard to diagnose your situation.

  Log.w(getClass().getName(), e.getMessage().toString());  ---THIS GETS
NULLPOINTER EXCEPTOION [sic]

*What* gets a NullPointerException? I see nothing in this code that can
throw an NPE.
'e' is non-null because it's in the 'catch' (and you shouldn't catch just
'Exception' anyway, usually).
Perhaps the message is null, which is very rare but I suppose it can happen.

Why do you call 'toString()' on a 'String'? You should get rid of that
useless call.

Give us data if you really want help.

Re: [android-developers] Concurrency: Do you use Loaders? AsyncTask? or Runnables?

2013-03-19 Thread Kristopher Micinski
There's basically one big difference:

- Loaders are supported on top of an Android minded concurrency
framework (the AsyncTask).
- Threads are more expressive (they give you more control), but
because of this it's easier to mess up.

It's not unheard of that you need fine grained control a la threads,
but if you can use Android specific facilities (loaders, tasks, etc..)
it's definitely a plus.

So I'd second Blake..

If you go through a few examples with each, you'll probably get a good
feel for when they are applicable..
