libs (ex: AdActivity of google, facebook login activity an so on). The most
important ones are
1. splash screen activity (launcher)
2. main app activity

The SplashScreen activity has this intent:

intent-filter
 action android:name=android.intent.action.MAIN /
 category android:name=android.intent.category.LAUNCHER /

while the main app activity has this:

intent-filter
action android:name=android.intent.action.VIEW /

action android:name=android.intent.action.SEND /
category android:name=android.intent.category.DEFAULT /
data android:mimeType=image/* /

because it can receive images.

The SplashScreen view is made of a relative layout with an image as a
drawable and three textview that each show some text (version, app name and
so on).
The drawable is a .png file of 960x640 (xhdpi).

I launched the app touching the icon (not by sharing an image with it: in
that case only the main app would be started and not the splash screen
activity) and it crashed.
I have absolutely no idea of what happened, but it seems to me that the
splash screen activity did not start at all.
Any idea?

because, we can check for list.isEmpty() which is better than
object!=null. not sure which one is better.

In your receiver, call startActivity.

However, I would recommend showing a notification instead. Arbitrarily
starting an application without knowing what the user is in the middle of
is a good way to get 1-star ratings and uninstalled.

[android-developers] Layout issues

2012-07-13 Thread Damien Cooke
Hi All,

I am having a problem with layouts. I am sure I have just missed something
stupid but if someone could point me in the right direction I would really
appreciate it.

I have build a navigation system which works very well for my application,

I have a scrolling tabBar which is a set of buttons inside a horizontal
scrollView. When one of the buttons is hit I load a new Layout into the
frameView.

So the idea is I have a LinearLayout which contains a FrameLayout and a
horozontalScrollView.

Pretty simple, and worked fine while I gave the frameLayout a specific size.
Now I want to support multiple device sizes I am having all sorts of issues. I
used patch9s to sort out the graphics but if I pop a layout like this:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
LinearLayout xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;
android:background=@android:color/black
android:orientation=vertical
android:layout_width=fill_parent
android:layout_height=fill_parent

ListView
android:id= @android:id/android:list
android:layout_width=fill_parent
android:layout_height=fill_parent/
/LinearLayout

Into my frame and I loose some of the rows ie they are there but are outside of
the scrollable area. In iOS I would alter the contentSize but I can find no
way of doing that.

My Tab controller adds the views like this

private FrameLayout frame;
private LocalActivityManager manager;

...

frame = (FrameLayout) findViewById(R.id.tab_content_frame);

if(manager == null)
{
manager = getLocalActivityManager();
}

Intent preloader = new Intent(this,SSDEventsActivity.class);
View childView = manager.startActivity(preloader.getAction(),
preloader.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP)).getDecorView();

frame.removeAllViews();
frame.addView(childView);

Here is the layout in question:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
LinearLayout
 xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;
 android:orientation=vertical
 android:layout_width=match_parent
 android:layout_height=match_parent
 android:gravity=bottom

FrameLayout
android:id=@+id/tab_content_frame
android:orientation=vertical
android:layout_height=fill_parent = if I set this it to a number it
all works but looks awful on all but the one size.
android:layout_width=fill_parent

android:layout_marginTop=0dip

 HorizontalScrollView
android:id=@+id/tab_button_scroller
android:orientation=vertical

[android-developers] 401 when trying to send GCM message to registered device

Hi all,
I am having some difficulties with GCM for android.

Here is what I am sending:

I am using Glassfish as my appserver.

I have used the key for browser apps as the collapse key

Has anyone got any idea why I might be getting a 401?

Java, the language that Android is programmed in, is garbage collected. So all

Thanks for your assistance. It is greatly appreciated.

bar at the bottom of the screen and a relative layout at the top that
acts as an iframe, so this is very doable. In my app I used the
LocalActivityManager to load the requested activity and then extract
it's main layout, like this:
LocalActivityManager manager = getLocalActivityManager();

Intent preloader = new Intent(com.pkg.Foo);
View childView = manager.startActivity(preloader.getAction(),
preloader.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP)).getDecorView();

frame.removeAllViews();
frame.addView(childView);
Each of the buttons in the tab bar calls to a loading function with
the requested Activity name and options like ViewFlipper index or
other startup options. After you add the childView to the frame, you
can also do something like this to animate in the view.
childView.startAnimation(slideLeftAnimation);
The only problem with this approach is that LocalActivityManager has
been deprecated as if this month in favor of Fragments and the
FragmentManager. So you might want to look into both options and see
what works best for your users and app needs. If you look at the
demos over at android.com there is a tab example using Fragments.

problem is that I am not really sure of how to do it with the maximum
performance.

I don't want to download the whole database because it would be too
big, I've thought of placing an xml file in the server with the
registers that have changed and the new values to download it and
parse it on the phone generating SQL queries to update, delete or
insert.

Another approach woul be updating the app but I think this would be
slower as it would download the whole database.

Any ideas?

TEXT field called description that on some rows is truncated on retrieval. I
have checked the database by running it app in the emulator and grabbing the
database and checking the contents. So I know the data is there. I retrieve
it using:

public Cursor getAdditiveByRowID(long rowId) throws SQLException
{
Cursor mCursor =
db.query(true, Additives.DATABASE_TABLE, new String[] {
Additives.KEY_ROWID,
Additives.KEY_IDENTIFIER,
Additives.KEY_NAME,
Additives.KEY_TYPE,
Additives.KEY_DESCRIPTION,
Additives.KEY_ACKNOWLEDGEMENT,
Additives.KEY_WARNING
},
Additives.KEY_ROWID + = + rowId,
null,
null,
null,
null,
null);
if (mCursor != null) {
mCursor.moveToFirst();
}

return mCursor;
}

When I use it the code looks like this:

if (cursor.moveToPosition(position))
{

Log.i(TAG,contents from cursor =
+cursor.getString(Additives.DESCRIPTION_COLUMN));

..

record.setDescription(cursor.getString(Additives.DESCRIPTION_COLUMN));
..
}

I checked the output and it appears to be truncating the output at various
stages (one it is 1980 chars before truncating and another it is 257 chars)
with some rows only. I checked for bad chars but as I thought, it was fine
(the same database is used in my iPhone app with no problems) So it must be
something I am doing. But I can not see where as it is wrong as soon as it
comes from the database. Any assistance or advice to debug this would be more
than helpful.

I have also checked the length (Thanks Frank) incase logcat is truncating the
strings and found this is not the issue. It reports the length that is
printed. I am stumped. I assume that others have extracted large strings from
sqlite under android as I have some rows which are larger than the ones being
truncated that return all the data as they should.

Regards
Damien

[android-developers] Developing for Galaxy Tab

2010-12-22 Thread Damien Cooke
Hi All,
I am interested in providing graphic images for an application I have written
for Android 2.1. My issue is I can use the screen size to specify the galaxy
in 2.2 but what do I do in 2.1. Stretching seems like a dumb idea to me, if
you have a high resolution device you don't want to stretch the assets to make
it look warped or fuzzy. Can I use the large screen folder in 2.1 or will it
just laugh at me?

I am really keen to provide assets for each supported device size.

Any help would be appreciated.

[android-developers] Notification assistance.

2010-12-11 Thread Damien Cooke
Hi All,
I am crossing from iOS to Android development and am after a small amount of
help with a concept. In ios I can post notifications that can be listed for by
other objects. These are not seen by the user, they are totally internal to
the application. Is this type of systemic messaging available or do I need to
more closely couple my classes? or even completely rethink my design?

Thanks and sorry for the dumb question
Damien
