 Hi,

When I started Android development, just three months ago, I have more
knowledge on C# than in Java -I used Java about more than 15 years ago,
while I have been doing things in C# just until one year ago or so-, and
given this experience I think that is better to learn Java than trying
to use C# for Android development.

However, based on this, it appears that you are using an evaluation version
of Mono 4 Android. The eval version only allows using the emulator. If
you want to be able to put your app on a device you will need to purchase a
license from Xamarin.

[android-developers] Mono for Android 4.0.1 Simplest App Won't Run on LG GT540 android ver.2.3.7

2012-06-28 Thread goran gg
here's the problem :
installed
xp sp3
vs 2010 ultimate
monoandroid 4.0.1
installer_r18-windows
- android 4.0.3 (API 15)
- android 4.0 (API 14)
- android 2.2 (API 8)
LGDrivers (I think, that is not necessary)
after i create the default app (with Button and click) in VS 2010
1. run with no debugger
( I try with both API 14 and API 8 too )
And I get :
name.name.apk
name.name-Signed.apk
2. adb install -r name.name-Signed.apk
i receive a text saying success and it works on my emulator
amazing wonderful BUT :

when I run this on my LG GT540 currently running android 2.3.7 version
I get a message saying:
sorry, application has unexpectedly stopped ..
What Android OS mean ?
I also tried
1 copying the name.name -Signed .apk to the phones manualy and install
with phone Android installer it still didnt work
2 I also rebooted the phone after instaling the app. it still didnt
work
So, successful at my emulator with VS 2010
succesfull with command adb
BUT wrong when I start at my phone ( the same message in all cases ..
application has unexpectedly stopped )
what am i doing wrong ?
I wont give up from mono for android. Its wonderful and new for me
like C# programmer.
I only wont to see default mono app running on my mobile device.

Try it. See what happens. Regardless of anyone else's experience, you won't
know if it's something that is worth your own time unless you play with it
yourself and experience it first hand.

Some thoughts:

1- If you know C#, you already know a very large amount of what you need to
know about Java. They're very similar at a high level.
2 - Any competent programmer should be able to pick up a new language in a
matter of days or weeks and you'll be better for it.
3 - The vast majority of people developing Android Apps are using Eclipse,
Java, and the Official SDK. If you decide to use Mono to save yourself the
time of learning Java, you will probably actually end up having a harder
time of things simply due to the lack of information and knowledge that
will be available compared to Java.

So I would recommend you just suck it up and learn Java if you're serious
about making Android Apps. Good luck.

Re: [android-developers] mono for android-How's it?

2012-03-08 Thread Justin Anderson
I have written Android apps in both Java and in C# using Mono.

For my own personal apps I use Java. At my job we are developing an
Android app and are required to use Mono for Android so that we can make
use of some rather extensive existing code.

Unless there is a valid reason, like at my job, I would highly recommend
just sucking it up and learning Java. As TreKing mentioned, syntax is very
similar and there are only relatively minor differences between the two.

Also, as he mentioned, any competent programmer should be able to learn a
new language relatively easy... Plus, it helps boost your resume to know
more languages. As for me, I would consider myself pretty proficient in
C++, Java, C#, PHP, and Javascript... I think it looks pretty good on a
resume. It keeps you well-rounded.

Also, I am using MonoDevelop on a Mac to use Mono for Android... I tried
using VS but found that the experience with using VS to develop apps with
Mono for Android was very bad... MonoDevelop is also available for Windows
if you are a Windows guy. But since that product is made by Xamarin there
is much more support there for it.

Also, when deploying an app with Mono for Android, you can only use the
emulator unless you purchase a license, so you aren't going to get very far
unless you want to fork out some money.

Another downside is that Mono for Android apps are using the Dalvik VM to
run another VM for the C# code so you are going through two virtual
machines. And currently there isn't support for the compatibility library
right now (though I have been told that the next release will support it).

Hope that helps...

Thanks,
Justin Anderson

[android-developers] mono on android

2009-01-17 Thread mathiastck

Anyone got any information on the mono download on the app market? It
listed a homepage that is tough to recall and enter on this g1.
Googling for android mono led to a good but closed thread in this
group.

Oddly the user's are commenting that he giant size of the mono app
forces some cleanup code, reduces the size of market and leads to thei
phone running better.

On that note, has someone written a max file client apk to test other
apps behavior in cramped external or sd storage?
