You don't mention which version of Ubuntu you're using. If it's the
latest version, then that may be the source of your problems. Android
won't build on Ubuntu 9.10 out-of-the-box because Ubuntu 9.10 does not
support java-1.5.0-sun. (You'll also run into problems caused by a too-
new version of GCC.)
If this is your problem, one thing you could do is install Virtual
Box, install a supported version of Ubuntu, such as 8.10 inside
Virtual Box, and then build Android inside that version. This would
allow you to follow the instructions athttp://source.android.com/
exactly, without running into problems caused by trying to build
Android on a newer and unsupported version of Ubuntu.
