software designers doing to incorporate technologies that engage with the user 
and assist them in developing their skill level?

an unsubscribe request? An open source Bob the Paperclip? Don't see it 
happening any time soon.

Let's not be too dismissive of users just because we ourselves have enormous 
brains of which we are inordinately proud (I understand I may be speaking only

I'm not being dismissive; you basically repeated what I said about
broken MUAs: I.e., it's the software's, not the user's fault that these
headers are useless.

And it probably boils down to various UX experts repeating the mantra
of fewer clicks until only brain-dead UIs make it through design review.
