Hello. If you're using an AMD GPU, you won't be able to shutdown or reboot correctly your computer. [arch-general] Problems with files creation / copy with Samba 4.12.x and SMB1 only device.
Hello. Before all, thanks to David C. Radkin for the tweak related to SMB1 activation. After installing Samba 4.12.x, I added only this in [global] section of /etc/samba/smb.conf to get access to one of my old SMB1 only network based HDD: server min protocol = CORE client min protocol = CORE After a reboot, I got access to my share, but every single time I want to copy / create a new file, a folder is created! Of course, I cannot delete this folder. [arch-general] About linux 4.8 and 4.9...
Sorry to reply to Phil Wyet this way. I enabled digest mode for arch-general. You won't see soon linux 4.9.x in core because it is kinda rotten with some Intel CPUs. You cannot get it to boot on some intel CPUs like an old T4200 or younger ones. I own three computers. Because of intel CPU regression in 4.9.xx, both my asus eeePC and my Toshiba Laptop are booting on linux 4.4.xx LTS. When I press PrintScreen, nothing happens. Nothing. Gnome-screenshot from command line start and also when I search it. I tried : 1) new key for screen capture : nothing 2) binding PrintScreen to launch another program : nothing 3) another keyboard : nothing I didn't tweak anything just installed gnome, gnome extra and gnome utils on setup time. If you have an idea, I'm glad to hear it. That very same problem happened to me. The thing is that newer gnome-screenshot versions don't get the window by default when pressing the PrintScreen key. Instead it saves the image into disk directly. Take a look into your PICTURES directory. execute $ xdg-user-dir PICTURES to discover what the directory is. Note that if for some reason that directory does not exist the capture will fail. If so do: $ xdg-user-dir-udate. HTH Rodrigo. Sorry, it won't help at all. Nothing - and I mean nothing - is started right after I push PrintScreen key. No flash, no sound. GnomeScreenshot is working from command line. And I ran xdg-user-dirs-update after starting my first gnome session. It is like the key is dead. But it is not a keyboard problem, same thing happens with another keyboard. Thanks anyway. -- Frederic Bezies fredbez...@gmail.com

I mean, seriously? How is it all handled in Fedora then? Well, I don't now, actually. Fedora is RedHat, and that's where systemd came to live, so you can guess... I wrote the first message before I successfully done a setup with a minimal rc.conf - It's a rolling release distro: You only have to carefully do pacman ./ -Syu to keep your system up-to-date. I started using Linux with Ubuntu and first I really looked forward to a new release, I mean new features, new artwork and all that stuff. But distupgrade nearly always failed and so I re-installed my system every six months. This is not good! With ArchLinux I can spent way more time just using my system instead of playing admin. Well said. I came from Ubuntu also, and I expected that in Arch some things would break because of it being rolling and more bleeding-edge than Ubuntu. For the record, I'm using arch since end of 2008 / beginning of 2009. It is the first time I was very upset by a change from developer team. I accepted that, but as it happened, it breaks _less_ than Ubuntu. And, actually, about the rc.conf split, I couldn't care less. One file, three files, doesn't make a difference to me. As long as they are text files, and not binary ones, like some other mainstream systems, all is good. Not 3, but 6 more files. 2012/7/22 Uli Armbruster uli.armbrus...@googlemail.com: [...] In the first moment when seeing those changes I had the same feeling. But after taking some time thinking about it, I changed my mind. Here's why: So :) - The rc.conf used to be the center of all config files. But this has been changing for quite some time. For example, preventing modules from being loaded could be done in the rc.conf's MODULES line by putting a ! in I remember this time. front. Before this, there was an extra line for modules which should not be loaded. This functionality was removed quite some time ago and nobody really complained. Of course it was much simpler back then, but it's still doable today. Using /etc/modprobe.d/ to manage modules is less simple than using a ! in front of a blacklisted module. And blacklisting modules is done once or twice a year. - Many variables in the rc.conf are only touched once in the livetime of an installation. E.g. HOSTNAME, who ever changes that? So you only have to deal with it once, so it's not a big loss, if this isn't configured in the rc.conf anymore. It won't hurt to let it in /etc/rc.conf either. - _THE_ killer argument for Archlinux is and stays the AUR combined with pacman's capabilities. And pacman improved a LOT over the last months, not just because of signed packages, also e.g. that -U can resolve dependencies etc. Well, since my first installation of arch back in end of 2008, pacman is far better :) - Arch's own init system is still supported and right now I don't see any signs that this will change. So just adjust your rc.conf or keep it (it still works), but nothing really changes for you. It won't be the same for new users or if you change your hardware. I change my hardware fully every 3 years or so. And to be honest, I reinstall my arch every 18 to 24 months because it is kinda dirty. I just grabbed it from AUR and built it. Smart move on putting it in aur :) I put it in AUR when libpng 1.5 hits testing because one of my tools wasn't working anymore. -- Frederic Bezies fredbez...@gmail.com
Re: [arch-general] Kernel 3.2.1 woes
2012/1/23 Norbert Zeh n...@cs.dal.ca Hi folks, just a heads up (and maybe request for feedback whether anybody has seen similar issues with this kernel upgrade). The recent upgrade from kernel 3.1.9 to 3.2.1 produced two graphics-related issues: On my dual-Opteron Asus board with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460, the X server fails to start and says that it cannot initialize the device at PCI 4:0:0 (i.e., my NVIDIA card). Downgrading to 3.1.9 fixes this issue. On my Core i7 Dell Latitude 6510 laptop using the on-chip graphics chip and the 1920x1080 laptop screen, everything is fine until I suspend the machine to RAM. When resuming, I get a black screen and not even rebooting brings the screen back to life. I have to turn the machine off and then back on. In contrast, my Core i7 desktop at home with an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 450 works just fine with the 3.2.1 kernel. I'm in the process of bisecting these issues (currently working on the laptop issue). I remember that back in the kernel 2.6.3x days, it took a long time for the Dell 6510 with 1920x1080 display and Intel graphics to boot without a black screen at all, and I seem to recall that this was because the patch that made it work apparently didn't do what it was supposed to do right. Maybe they now found a way to do it right, only it doesn't work, at least after a suspend. Note that, even though I get a black screen after suspending, the machine is otherwise alive, as I can blindly switch to a TTY and reboot the machine cleanly from there. Bisecting is proving a bit painful because quite a few intermediate versions I'm testing result in a straight kernel panic after suspend. Just a guess of course, cause it looks like a kmod bug I saw when it was in testing... -- Frederic Bezies fredbez...@gmail.com

Hello. In order to build pan-git (and next version of pan2), gmime 2.6.x is needed. Any hope to see it updated ? Thanks. -- Frederic Bezies fredbez...@gmail.com
