[asterisk-users] CallerID in UK on TalkTalk - different to BT?

2006-07-08 Thread Angus Comber
Hello

I had an Asterisk installation working fine for CallerID on BT analog lines
using a Digium analog 4 port card. However, user switched to TalkTalk
without telling me and CallerID no longer works. However, if you connect a
UK CallerID capable phone into one of these analog lines directly you do see
the CallerID.

Does anyone know how to tweak the settings for Talk Talk. Talk Talk have
basically taken over the line rental - and they supply everything including
the CLIP (CallerID) service now.

Just to be clear CallerID was working fine before when line rental supplied
by BT.

Some of zapata.conf:
usecallerid=yes
cidsignalling=v23 ; added for UK CLI detection
cidstart=polarity ; added for UK CLI detection

Even though the line has been taken over by TalkTalk, it's still a BT
line off a BT Exchange so the initial leg of the call (or final
depending on your point of view) is still BT.

I thought that the line would now go through talktalk (It is an LLU
service after all).

FWIW, the same thing happened to me with a line that moved to bulldog.

Its strange, if I reboot my Asterisk you get no callerid. But then if you
do a reload of the config then callerid comes back. any ideas why this
could happen?

In the UK BT still own 85% of all copper into premises. Ofcom forced
them to relinquish various controls so others could offer service using
their lines (but BT still remain owners of the copper).

Initially there was CPS (carrier pre select) whereby the line was still
rented from BT, but another operator would get all the call traffic,
this is done by programming the line in the exchange.

There is now also WLR (wholesale line rental) where the billing of the
line is taken over by the other operator, but call traffic really stills
go through the exchange to another operator.

With LLU (local loop unbundling) there are two options, shared metallic
path, whereby BT bill the line and do voice, and the LLU operator takes
the broadband service.

Non-shared, the line is completely jumpered to the LLU operator and they
take voice and data (Bulldog used this).

TalkTalk WILL do full non-shared service, however as they haven't built
out enough most of the customers they're signing up are actually using
BT Wholesale for broadband provision and using WLR for voice. They will
eventually migrate those users to their own kit when they unbundle the
exchange.

2005-05-30 Thread Vassilis Konstantinou
Hmmmyes but last time I played with my FXO module on the TDM400 could
not detect hangup properly (that is on a London BT line). Has this been
fixed? I keep an eye on the CVS but I have not seen any fixes for that.
Maybe I missed it.

Vassilis

Well, the official line is as Mr. Spencer has made in that bugtracker
entry...

Digium sell the TDM400P which supports polarity detection. CVS supports UK
CallerID on that card. Digium no longer sell the X100P so it's not supported
any more.

The X100P is a fairly crappy choice for the UK since it has a hardcoded
600ohm

impedance, suitable really only for the USA...

But yes, 'it was only £10 on eBay' been there done that, wasted hours playing
with txgain/rxgain/echo cancellation... :)

Cheers,
Gavin

No idea... I didn't say the TDM400P was actually any good (I don't own one),
just that it is better supported than the X100P :)

Hi Gavin,

Thanks for the reply. I did look at the wiki and read the page you pointed
at. According to the wiki mark didn't want to add caller id for the x100p
card. I found patches for the x100p card and just this minute re-compiled
and they work a treat. Was just wondering if the patches had been put into
the CVS and if not was there plans to put the patches in. Would be a shame
to waste the work and to deny caller id for these cards in the UK.

Cheers,

Phil

Hi Gavin,

Can you recommend a good card/modem for the UK? Looks like I'm going down
the same track as you. At first I was going for the TDM400 dev kit but
they are not certified or available yet in the UK and I wanted to play :-)

Cheers,

Phil.

The cheapo X100P I have at home works adequately. We have such a low call
volume it's barely relevant, so it 'works for me'...

I don't know anything about the other affordable options like the Grandstream
ATA-486 FXO port, etc.

Aside from that, I'd just sign up a new geographic number with sipgate.co.uk
and use that for incoming, thereby eliminating any analogue problems :)

Cheers,
Gavin.
