SPA504G seems to be a good choice since I don't want to have any issues and
this still have the same provisioning scheme I'm working right now.
Also I like the HD feature.. what is the bandwith consumption for that
feature? It will work only between 2 spa504 right? or any G722 device can
interoperate with it?

I actually give customers the choice - maybe that's their downfall!

(or mine!)

But the GXP2000 has been a very good platform for me. I'm still happy to
use it.

I have always found that the marginal extra cost of a Polycom, Snom or
Cisco phone is very, very well worth it in the long run versus the
giant catastrophe that is Grandstream and other low-budget hardware.
The customers seem to agree.

"Budget-conscious" doesn't have to mean "masochistic."

I have 4 GXV 3000's.

They're in a "residential" setting - my own/wifes family so we can keep

Agreed - but do note that this is a single line phone (correct me if I am
wrong). And although hardly anyone will be interested: It also works fine
with Asterisk using MGCP instead of SIP.

By the way it appears that Innovaphone is still selling this as "IP110".
http://www.innovaphone.com/index.php?id=125&L=0

The latest SIP firmware I am aware of is dated Jul 2006: build 101b4
If anyone happens to know about a later version I'd be interested to
learn more about it.

Hi

We use Snom phones pretty exclusively and find them to be really good.
So long as you get the firmware version up to 7.3.28 you shouldn't have
any issues.

They are really good for remote configuring and management and also have
a really nice web interface for the user to use if the phones and PCs
are on the same network.

I haven't used any standard Grandstream IP phones, but I am *trying* to
stabalize the new video phones they have come up with. I have several
GXV3000 and GXV3140s. I got through central provisioning using their java
based tool and for the most part these phones work, but have very odd
bugs. If left to itself for more than a few days the 3140 simply stops
answering calls. The 3000 has very odd DTMF issues - like doubling every
digit pressed. This is all fine and I know they are new products, but
what is frustrating is Grandstream's lack of support. The forums are next
to useless, and the firmware releases are always "coming very soon".

Then there are my horrid experiences with their FXO gateways. Echo, bad
audio in general, needing a reboot every few days, etc. Again, support is
non existant.

So regardless of the quality of the latest phones, the company itself
leaves a lot to be desired IMO.

The same can be said for the US versions. My experience has been it's not a
case of 'if' the PSU will fail, but 'when'. In a past (less intelligent) life,
I deployed a fair number of the GXP2020s and GXP2000s. There are not very many
of them left that haven't completely died(the phone itself), and of those left,
they've all had power supplies replaced.

I cannot speak for the quality of the later devices from Grandstream. After

Since you've had one negative for the Grandstream, I'll balance it and
give them a positive...

Now, it's true to say that Grandstream phones haven't been without their
probems in the past, but the current generation are really nice. The
GXP2000 has been about for a long time too and I've not had any issues
with them in the past 18 months or so. They've undergone a few hardware
revisions too. I statically provision all my phones and use a perl utility
called gsutil. They can be provisioned from a tftp server though, but I've
never done this.

They sound fine, and have plenty of features that are easy to use - call
transfer - big backlit display (now variable contrast and brigtness) 7
easy to use speed dial/BLF buttons, etc.

If not using PoE I'd suggest getting a few extra PSUs though - that's one
area I have had a few issues with - but maybe it's just been the UK ones.

I talked to the Cisco SPA guy at the 2009 Astricon convention about this -
according to him, the SPA line is a completely different team than the 79xx
series team. Thus, the SPA (and especially the new SPA5xx series) had better
support for SIP out of the box, because that's what they were originally
designed for (whereas the 79xx series was built for SCCP and CUCM). There
was even a document (https://www.myciscocommunity.com/docs/DOC-10647) that
listed how to make the SPA5xx series phones work with asterisk.

The phones were really nice, but I haven't seen one outside of a
demonstration environment. As far the OP's question, I've successfully used
Polycom, Cisco, and Aastra phones, all in the price range listed, that have
been very nice and support all the options you've requested.

SIP support in newer generations of the 79XX series is much better. I
believe that their goal is to have 100% feature parity between the SIP
and the SCCP images, they are probably 90% now. Whether Asterisk
supports all of those features is another matter though.

Coming from someone who uses 7940's and 60's: has Cisco/Linksys embraced
SIP compatibility with asterisk more completely with the SPA504G's than they
have the 7940 series? Lack of features on the 7940's is frustrating, and
makes me hesitant to try other Cisco phones, even if the SPA504G is newer.

SPA504G - 1 more vote for it.

It is worth having 4 lines even if you need 1 initially.

SPA504G supports G722 and sound is awesome even if you do not not use
teh HD sound. If you do not care that mcuh about HD sound and do not
need PoE SPA941 is a excellent choice - you get really a lot for the price

Just don't /ever/ upgrade the firmware if you get one that is semi

I like Grandstreams, but yes, they have had issues in the past, and as you
say, don't upgrade the firmware if you have one that does what you need it
to do. New Grandstreams with the 1.6 series firmware have been very good
indeed.

The issues I've had have been when upgrading new firmware onto old
hardware. There have been several hardware revisions of the GXP2000 and
older phones just don't work that well with newer firmware. I have one
which I bought over 2 years ago with the latest & greatest on it - it
works, but there are issues with audio quality occasionally (Once or twice
during a call it buzzes for a few seconds! This doesn't happen with the
same firmware on newer hardware platforms)

Still - you get what you pay for, and I've yet to find a phone with the
same features as the GXP2000 for the same price. Most of my customers like
them - I offer them the choice of Grandstream and Snom - and at nearly
twice the price for a Snom 360 vs. a GXP2000, most of them go for the
Grandstreams...

It's almost impossible to get to know every phone type really well - thats
one disadvantage of an open standard (like Linux distributions!) but it's
a small price to pay for compatability - I do have customers with Polycom,
Linksys and ATL phones - all working for them though.

Grandstream, Siemens and Snom (but not Snom for DECT!!!) are the ones I've
decided to learn the most about... If only I have more time (& money!) to
play with others...

So anybody can ready anybody else's configuration?

I didn't say that, I said the person who developed the web interface
should be forced to use it. Which is way worse than being taken out
and shot. Especially when the "exit" button changes position in the
middle of a menu operation. Maybe they need Flash in the phone?

This said, damn fine sounding phones, especially in g722 on a wideband
conference bridge like the one we talk on every Friday :)

We have a bunch of SNOM 360's we are not using. I agree they are not
intuitive to the user. They work ok in general. I would part with 15 or so
at an attractive price, one or more,

I like the Grandstream 2000 series. Easy to use, easy to set up, good web
page. Priced nice on the wholesale market.

There are several resources for configuring the phones from the XML
config files. If the config files are sane, the phones don't take that
long to reboot.

This is probably one of the better examples:

Mainly I suggest it because the OP asked for an inexpensive quality phone.
I agree on the provisioning - the web interface is useless, and unless you
know how to setup the XML files properly you are doomed to a very
frustrating experience.

I will agree with most of what you say about the polycoms, but here is one
thing to help you out.  The Polycom 501 has an HTTP configuration interface;
I set up mine thru http://127.0.0.1:8088/asterisk/static/phones where
/var/lib/asterisk/static-http/phones contains the polycom TFTP directory
members.

True, Polycom's are brilliant for voice quality, but unlike the Snom, a
Polycom /will/ reboot on the drop of a hat /and/ take a damned long time
to do it (~45-60 seconds) In addition, the web interface should be
taken away and shot - the only real way to configure them is through (T)FTP.

They are however, extraordinarily configurable through the XML config
and they are very stable. Once they're configured they work very
nicely. The lack of a decent number of BLF keys (even with a very
expensive sidecar you only get two more keys than a standalone Snom320)
puts me off a little.

However, for a conference phone, the Polycom's can't be easily beaten.
Their handsfree call quality is in a league of it's own.

IMO yes, though it really depends on what you want from the phone.

The Snom 320s handle transfers considerably better than the 300s and all
round are a little easier to work with and use. The 12 programmable
keys that can be used for lines, BLF indication, speed dials as well as
other things are a big plus. They are easy to configure - and unlike
many other makes of phone do /not/ reboot on the drop of a hat.

The only real problem I have with the Snom 320 is the display - the
display is a bit too small and /isn't/ backlit. considerably better than
the 300s. Having said that, the display on the 320s are still much
better than those of the 300s.

Jared et al,

I have had one of these phones for about a week, with only a little
time to "play" with it. I wrote a very incomplete review that I hope
to finish RSN but here's a few observations:
http://voipusersconference.org/review and I do hope to add more meat
to it. Michael Graves has posted a bunch of photos on that site as
well.

My very first evaluation is that this would be a perfect first phone
for an Asterisk newbie, replacing for example the Grandstream BT100
which is inferior in many ways but also cheaper than the Allnet. The
Allnet can be set to do SIP or IAX2 in the web interface, but the
unique feature AFAIK is that it can be set to do both so you can dial
a (configurable) *0 for SIP and *1 for IAX. This is great for testing.
The phone can register with up to four servers and it can speed dial
any number. That means it can speed dial a SIP URI and I haven't
figured out if this is doable on either the Polycom ip500 or the
Sipura SPA-941 that I own. The voice quality seems very good to me and
the phone has a much sturdier feel than most of the competition in
this price range.

I'm told the US dealer, somewhere in Florida, hasn't answered the call
put in a few days ago yet. In the meantime, there is a UK dealer

http://www.allnetuk.com/

The dealer I was told to contact by the German wholesaler to buy the
phone in France is called Senso Telecom:

http://www.senso-telecom.com/content/view/13/28/lang,en/

Here's the wholesaler page with other countries on it: http://212.18.29.54

I received a couple of ALL7960 phones from ALLNET
Network in Germany
this past week, and the firmware handles both SIP and
IAX. I haven't
done a lot of stress testing on them, but so far I'm
very happy with
 the
phones and their ability to easily make both SIP and

Hi lan:
thanks for your reply. i already discussed with atcom engineer. they
are sorry that they

it can catch up others.
fanvil is really poor. we have dozens of fanvil FV6050 and now we
have to give up all of them and waiting for snom phones.

I think that Fanvil is ATCom repackaged (I have an atcom and fanvil
phone and the configuration structure and menus are the same although
the atcom interface looks better). Fanvil's firmware support is
poor and I accidentally downgraded the firmware thinking I was
upgrading it according to their web page.

Phonebook will be an issue. Attended an unattended transfers aren't
a problem with these phones and I thought call-back would be
implimented in the PBX, not the phone.

Maybe have a look at Mitel, you can tickle a URL on the phone to
make it dial, so clicking on the name on the company directory in
the intranet will call them using your phone.

Re: [asterisk-users] ip phone suggestion for Asia?

2007-12-23 Thread d tbsky
hi:
thanks a lot for so many great information. i tried to read the
specs and manuals for all the phones mentioned.
we use alcatel pbx in most offices. i surveyed some users to
understand what functions they use most. and i found few people know
how to use 3way-conf or forward.i think if the
function needs two or more keys to operate, then people tend to ignore
it unless he use that function for daily business.
i conclude the functions we need are all basic functions. but due
to the difference of ip pbx/phones and classic pbx/phones, some of
these functions seem not so "basic" in the ip world:

1. dial out name display. when you dial a number, the phone lcd will
show the corresponding name, so you can realize if it is the correct
number immediately. this needs a corporate directory support, or put
the whole corporate phonebooks to every ip phone. most ip phone has
less than 500 local phonebook entries. this is not enough for us.
grandstream: has xml phonebook support and can combine with local
phonebooks.
linksys: has coporate directory but seems only work with linksys
pbx, not asterisk.
aastra: has xml phonebook
snom: has ldap and xml phonebook. xml seems for browsing, don't
know if work here.
other china brand phone: none.

2. transfer. transfer is simple and straightforward in classic pbx.
you just press "transfer" then dial number and you are on the way of
attended transfer. you press "transfer" again to cancel transfer. you
hangup to complete the attended transfer. if you hangup before the
completion of attended transfer, the transfer becomes blind transfer
automatically. eventually user didn't notice the "blind" or
"attended" concept in classic pbx.
snom: has "transfer on hook". don't know if it can do all what i want.
others: some china phones almost can do it, but need to press
"hold" to cancel transfer.

3. call back on busy. in alcatel, if you dial someone and he is on
the phone, you will hear something like "busy, please dial 5 if you
want to request callback". you can dial 5 and you will hear "success,
please hangup". asterisk has several ways and patches to do this. but
i saw some phone can do this locally. i don't know which is better.
linksys: has this function in spec. don't know how to use.
snom: has "call completion".
others: i didn't find this or i miss it.

4. pickup. i think this is easy to emulate "*8" and let asterisk do
it. any better method? every phones can do this emulation.

5. three-way conference, forward. if there are simple (one key) method
to implement these. in alcatel, if the phone if forwarded, when you
pick up the handset you will hear like "forwarded, please press *1 to
cancel". it's easy so everyone can cancel the forward. but it need two
keys to start a forward, so few users know how to forward a number.

please correct me if there are mistakes or missing.
thanks again for your great help!!

tbskyd

I've been a bit of a Grandstream "enthusiast" for some time now, and
generally get on very well with them, but I have to say that recently I've
become somewhat irritated by them. I know they had some hardware issues
way back, but I've never encountered any of them.

For the money, it *is* a feature packed phone. It's a bit plasticy and the
sound quality isn't as good as say a Snom, but I've a lot of customers for
whom the price is right.

For a long time I've used software version 1.1.1.14, but recently they've
had newer versions which I've been unable to downgrade to that version.
Their latest version, 1.1.5.15 has fixed a few things, removed the router
function (which I had no use for anyway), but in return I now get the
occasional buzzing sound every few minutes from one older phone I've
upgraded. Not sure about the new ones, not dared to upgrade them yet!
Additionally, some phones I have out in the field which were shipped with
some intermediate version of the s/ware have odd audio problems.

I've emailled them, and get replies eventually, nothing forthcoming about
a fix yet, so who knows...

I do like the phones though, the GXP2000 is very nice, if a little "fisher
price", and for the money I can't better it, but if their software doesn't
stabilise, then who knows what I'll be tempted to move to in the future...
(probably Snom if I can persuade my customers to pay a little more - the
300's screen is jsut too small, and the price difference between that and
the 320 is just a bit too much for my market...)

For the price Grandstream GXP-2000 is very feature packed and has a
decent size and resolution display. The menus aren't the nicest but
the phone works and it does not sound bad. For $70 you get what you
pay for and the firmware is pretty stable and always being updated.

Hi,

We currently use the 942 and 962. These both have backlight displays. The 962
is obviously the model with the nice color screen.
These phones are very easy to manage. We configure all phone remotely via TFTP,
and they phones are set to pull their config periodically. Very easy for making

Both the 842 and 942 do not have lit displays and are hard to read.
Is the 963 any better?

Re: [asterisk-users] ip phone suggestion for Asia?

2007-12-20 Thread Joe
I always forget about Linksys/Sipura phones. Yes they are very nice. I know
there can be some contractual issues when you deal with Linksys/Cisco, but
they are well constructed and I haven't heard anything bad.

I do think you'd get better support with Snom/Grandstream, but this is
coming from my experiences with Cisco more then Linksys.

hi Joe:
thanks for your great opinion. we will buy spares of course. our new
office needs about 150 phone.we use alcatel before. but want to
change to asterisk now for better future.
since aastra is not sale to asia (that's sad, aastra boss seems born
at taiwan). i will choose snom or grandstream. polycom seems really
expensive,
i saw someone say their cheap model has no hardware "transfer" key. so
i think i need to pay much more to get what i want in polycom.

Re: [asterisk-users] ip phone suggestion for Asia?

2007-12-19 Thread Joe
You get what you pay for.

Snoms are good phones. Grandstreams are also good. I hear Snoms are easier
to get around NAT and the seem like higher quality construction.
Grandstreams are great for cheap and easy set-ups. I remember one guy
telling me he buy up a case and if anything goes wrong with a unit he has a
couple spares to go in its place.

Over all... if you're looking for setting up office phones, Snom, Polycom,
and Aastra look/feel nice.
If you're looking to set up small offices or call centers on the cheap,
Grandstreams are OK.

I personally like Grandstream for home use, but I use Polycom for work, and
I hear good things about Snom.

Re: [asterisk-users] ip phone suggestion for Asia?

2007-12-19 Thread Joel Hill
Hi tbskyd,

We have found that the Grandstream's are not that great a phone. One of
our best sellers is the Snom range and I know that the Australian
supplier spends half his time in Hong Kong so you shouldn't have any
problems getting so over there. They are a little more expensive than
the Grandstream's but cheaper than the Polycoms around that Aastra price
range.

Cheers,

Joel.

[asterisk-users] ip phone suggestion for Asia?

2007-12-19 Thread d tbsky
Hi:
i am surveying ip phones for our company. we will use them with asterisk.
we have office in taiwan, hong kong, singapore and china.
cisco and polycom are too expensive for us.
we try several china brand ip phones. they are all cheap and
some of them have good quality. but most of them won't offer future firmware
support, which we think it's important for ip phones.
searching in the mail list, we found aastra is good, but they don't sale to
asia. grandstream looks good also.there are many grandstream users in the list,
can someone share any good or bad experience about grandstream today?
if there are other good choice, please tell us!!
thanks a lot for your help!!

Not specifically directed at Toms reply -

Gee, all Stephen said was "Ugh. This is a Win32 app, isn't it?" ...
that's hardly an opinion, at most perhaps a rethorical question. How
was he being rude?

I happen to agree that the tool discussed is of little value (as we are
a Linux-only shop), but if "Ugh. This is a Win32 app, isn't it?" is
enough to upset you, you really need to get out more.

Ugh. This is a Win32 app, isn't it?

Wow,

The guy makes a useful application and provides it to the
community for
free and you have the cojones to bitch and moan b/c it's a windows
app?

Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth!

[snip]

B. It's not a gift horse for me, because it's totally use*less* to me.

[snip]

It *is* a gift horse; he gave it to you, after all. The expression
"To look a gift horse in the mouth" implies that someone gave you a
horse and you looked into its mouth to see how old it is and whether
it is of value to *you*. A modern comparison might be pulling up
froogle to see how much a gift cost as someone gives it to you.

In other words, taking a gift from someone and questioning its value
to you in front of that person's face is rude, inconsiderate, and bad
form. I would understand a post along the lines of: "Wow, that looks
like a great program from the description, but it's a windows only
app, and I don't run Windows. Does anyone know of something similar
for Linux?"

I dunno, I guess I'm not your mother, but then again, it seemed
pretty rude considering the guy offered the program for free and you
were criticizing the fact that he didn't develop a free linux app for
you, too.

A. Yes, I have the cojones. He never mentioned what platform it was for.
We need something like this for Linux. I got all excited about it only
to be terribly disappointed when I unpacked it.

From the original announcement : "It runs on any modern flavor of Windows."

It is not like if he said "runs on windows or better", then Linux
would seem appropriate ;)

You have at least two option beside having a windows machine :
1 - try it in WINE
2 - install Windows in a vmware machine (only way to run windows
without ever rebooting your machine)

Actually the original poster did say this was a Windows program. I
believe the exact wording was "It runs on any modern flavor of Windows."

Here's something similar for Linux: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vgps/

Note I do not support nor endorse Voicepulse. Actually let's get it
straight, I detest Voicepulse.
