Aastra 480i ( Ilove it!), Polycom IPx00/x01 series, Snom's all provide
for headsets. Most via RJ style connections, some (SNOM) both RJ and
2.5mm or 3.5mm jacks.

Depends on the type of headset. The Grandstream GXP-2000 and Liksys SPA-941
have headphone jacks on them, most phones are compatible with Plantronics
univeral headsets.

The Sipura SPA-841 is a nice compromise between the Ciscos and the
 Grandstreams.

Check out the new Grandstream GXP-2000. I've been testing these,
they're much better than the BT-100s.

[Asterisk-Users] IP Phones for home use?

2005-05-03 Thread Neil Cherry
I currently have Asterisk, an X100P and a Grandstream 100 for
playing around with. I'm interested in another IP phone for
daily use. The Grandstream is fine but feels a little cheap
and won't be acceptable by my wife (very important). What
I want is a phone with lots of buttons and an LCD screen
with lots of information (the Cisco 7970 would be nice)!
But the reality is that we need a phone that is not overly
complicated, handles 2 calls, caller ID info, reasonably
priced, not ugly looking (the 7920's are ugly) and not much
else. So a compromise to something in between is called for.
What are your recommendations for a slightly fancy home phone?

Neil,
The Cisco 7912G is a great phone or the 7940G, the 7912 only handles one
line, but has a higher resolution screen, while the 7940 can handle 2 (4
with call waiting).

This winds up being very user specific. I love Polycom, others love
SNOM others love Cisco... Etc...

The Polycom IP300 is nice but only one row LED. IP500 is a great phone
and has 3 line LED.
Personally, I love the whole upright look and the phones have good
speaker phone.

$0.02.

Thanks for all the opinions I have a lot of good examples now.
I do like the 7940G and I may borrow one from the lab and see
how well it goes. I'm also happy to have the rest of the opinions
and I've not eliminated the other vendors just slimmed it down
to fewer models. Lastly my wife informed me that she wants this
really ugly phone to be put in the kitchen. Looks like a phone
with a crank on the side. I know better than argue so I'll be
getting one of the Sipura gateway devices.

Hello all,
Here is our problem ..
IP SIP phones remote ..
They will connect to our IP PBX (Asterisk Server) without issue however no
voice makes it when anyone answers a phone call made by one of these IP
phones.
So this means SIP is working but RTP is not, Here is what I currently have
on the firewall (http://m0n0.ch/wall).
Firewall Rules
TCP/UDP * * 192.168.2.253 5060 NAT SIP Protocol
UDP * * 192.168.2.253 4569 NAT IAX Protocol
UDP * * 192.168.2.253 5036 NAT IAX Protocol
UDP * * 192.168.2.253 1 - 2 NAT RTP UDP
NAT Rules
WAN TCP/UDP 5060 - 5099 192.168.2.253 5060 SIP Protocol
WAN UDP 4569 192.168.2.253 4569 IAX2 Protocol
WAN UDP 5036 192.168.2.253 5036 IAX Protocol
WAN UDP 1 - 2 192.168.2.253 1 - 2 RTP UDP Range
IP phones are Sipra 841's and work great when on the same subnet as the *
server, this only becomes an issue when offnet and of course outside of
the
firewall.

So I am stumped as to why this does not work .. I have logging turned on
for
all of the above and see no packets getting dropped .. Anyone there able
to
shead some light on this ..

I am sure you can legally ship them to India but you'll find a
difficult time getting them through customs unless you plan ahead.
Make sure the Indian call center is set up properly under Indian tax
law so that they are not liable for any duties, have someone from the
call center in contact with customs before you ship and have them go
to the port of entry the day they arrive and try to get them walked
through. In my experience it is best to use air freight or to fly them
  in as hold baggage yourself.

If you just ship them over you might find they get caught in customs
or disappear. I've also seen equipment destroyed by Indian customs too
by leaving it exposed, so make sure the equipment is sealed to prevent
  moisture getting in.

I don't mean to discourage you, it certainly can be done, but you
*must* do your research first and follow through properly in India.

In the past, when dealing with international issues, we've found it less
stressful to just send money and have someone local do the purchasing
and installation. The distributor will have taken care of getting the
stuff into the country, and there are fewer complications. No specific
 experience with India.

I am looking to buy a few IP phones, but I don't have a huge budged (hence

knew where I could get some cheap IP Phones ?

Ideally they should be no more then about £50 ($90).

Looked at one of these phones about a month ago (the ATA 323, haven't seen
the ATA 723), the base unit is very light and the rubber stoppers are crap
so the phone slides across the desk whenever you pickup the handset.
There
was no visual MWI (message waiting indicator) on the phone and the default
firmware load was primitive - although config was via telnet, web or tftp,
new firmware had to be upgraded by ftp (not tftp), the firmware from the
website had a name that was different from what the phone asked for and
had
a space as the first character - ' phone.bin' was what the phone was
requesting rather than 'phone.bin'. The new firmware gave nicer features
like web interface based firmware loading (still no tftp though) but
changed
the dialtone from a standard type tone to a horrible type buzzing noise.
They were cheaper than the Granstreams but a little bit too 'cheap' if you
 know what I mean.

The Ciscos should be able to do this via a XML Service using the RTPTx:
and RTPRx: URI schemes. The tricky part is just pushing the RTPRx to the
listening phone.
XML service specifications are here:

I don't think this is possible, from my understanding of the Cisco
firmware using SIP images. While it may be possible to initiate
receipt of an RTP stream from an XML command, how do you get the
Cisco to execute the XML command to begin with, without having the
user push keys to start up the process? Caution: to not believe the
Cisco manuals are correct when they say that the SIP O/S on the phone
runs a web server. They do not. The only way that I have discovered
the Cisco 79xx phones can download a URL from a remote server are via
either user interaction (pressing a sequence of keys) or by putting
together a really UGLY XML page that refreshes every few seconds.
But even this suffers from the problem of: How does the first page
get requested?

I'd be happy to be proven wrong in my assertion that intercom and
paging is impossible with Cisco SIP phones. Please send code. :)
Now, if all your comments are about SCCP phones, can you send along
the SCCP driver for Asterisk so the rest of us can play?

PS: If one could initiate XML requests remotely, perhaps a better way
to do intercom/paging would be to use the Play command, and (if
possible) use a pipe on the server side to connect to a live audio
stream. (sigh) If only I could control the phones from the server...

Not with your phones, unless they have auto-answer (and probably not
even then.)

I have heard of people with phones that support pager features on
the other pair of wires in an RJ-11. In other words, the second pair
of wires into the phone carries an audio stream that is played out
the speaker regardless of the status of the phone.
I just thought I point out that this feature is available on analog phones
designed for use by PC PBX's like this for example ...

Really??
Well, the Skinny version does run a web server. Maybe an upgrade of the
SIP firmware comes with that feature?

either user interaction (pressing a sequence of keys) or by putting

The phones have an idle URL setting, which can be used exactly for that:
polling an XML service every n seconds. However, I admit that's ugly.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong in my assertion that intercom and
paging is impossible with Cisco SIP phones. Please send code. :)

Will do, as soon as I get time to play with this. That's way at the bottom
of my todo list, though...

Now, if all your comments are about SCCP phones, can you send along
the SCCP driver for Asterisk so the rest of us can play?

Well, sorry. For now, you'll have to use CCM and configure * as an H.323
gateway using chan_oh323.
Writing a Skinny driver is definitely somethinh I will not do. I'd happily
move away from that protocol, if they'd just let me...

Maybe the MGCP firmware is an alternative?

Nope, the play command (whatever you mean by that: there's playing a
file via TFTP, and playing audio/basic via HTTP) won't work properly for
that purpose: The phone would just download the whole stream before
playing it (in both cases). That means you get an initial delay = length
of stream, and the stream is limited by the phone's memory (to 5s
according to the documentation, to 20s acording to my experiments...).

If you had phones like this, you could use the Console channel and
the audio out jack on your Asterisk server to pipe the output into
the phone system, thus creating pager calls to all stations. You
would not (easily) have the ability to select individual stations.
You could just as easily pipe this output to your office PA system.
