You can also monitor active calls with SNMP. This should be a lower load than manager (I've no stats to prove it). It is also easier to secure as the asterisk MIB is read only :-) I'm in the process of writing a proof of concept that monitors to Asterisk over snmp. While channels are not exactly calls (a call can span over two channels), it gives you a good idea.
