It should be possible that way. A few caveats:

- Gain settings (also on your PRI/BRI lines) are crucial for faxing - set it
too loud and the handshake will fail, set it too soft and the fax will fail
after a certain amount of time. Quality of ATA's is also very important with
this.

- Make sure your box has enough horsepower to cover all the interrupts!

The path is all digital but the clocks on the pri and the bri cards are
not synchronized. Every now and again a frame will be dropped or
duplicated to make up for the frequency difference. I guess ecm faxes will
handle this if the frequency error is small enough.

It would be sweet if the timing ports on the digium pri cards and the
junghanns bri cards were/are compatible.

Telephony is an expensive game to be in :) "But my ISDN card was only 20 EUR!"
suddenly doesn't mean an awful lot when you have to manufacture in very low
volume..

The Junghanns and Sirrix devices are not consumer kit, and you should not
expect to simply multiply the cost of a single-ISDN card by the number of
ports :)

Asterisk has /vastly/ lowered the entry cost for telephony - ask around to
find the average prices of, say, an E1 module for a proprietary PBX or a
16-channel BRI ISDN module... then suddenly 600 EUR for 8 channels will seem
like a very good deal indeed.

Cheers,
Gavin.

I'm using Junghanns 4 port card. There is also an 8 port card.
Installation is very simple, download a startup image from Junghanns.net
and it does the rest... It works - I've no complaints.

ps - FAX reception works - as part of asterisk.

I assume you are using spandsp?

I am thinking of another solution for fax. I have an * box with one PRI
card and I'm thinking of adding a quad BRI card in the same box.

A separate box running fasx server software will also be equipped with a
BRI card for faxing (I cannot use spandsp for various reasons, one of them
being that we must log / register all faxes).

By keeping the path all digital I'm hoping to avoid trouble with echo
(cancellation), interrupted faxes etc.

Anyone have an idea on this?

Hmmm, the sirrix isn't even that much cheaper than the Junghanns boards.
The difference is only EUR 100

I'm using Junghanns 4 port card. There is also an 8 port card.
Installation is very simple, download a startup image from Junghanns.net

However - you are somewhat reliant on Junghanns.net for all future
changes - etc. I'm running... Asterisk CVS-D2005.05.02.22.00.00-05/04/05

I'd be MUCH more comfortable if somehow Junghanns changes were rolled
into the main stream code... I'd also love to see Digium with a
multi-port BRI-ISDN adaptor for both US and non-US use.

Its also possible to configure the card jumpers (add some power?) and
then plug an ISDN phone into the card.

ps - FAX reception works - as part of asterisk.

Aside from paying for a recognised brand name, with Eicon you get on-board
DSPs and firmware, as well as software to make the card appear as a series
of /dev/tty devices (and/ or CAPI) under Linux.

The Junghanns BRI boards have no such on-board logic, they are pure telephone
interfaces driven by the host - and as such they are /perfect/ for Asterisk.

We use an Eicon Diva Server 4BRI for our fax server because of the TTY
interface for Hylafax - the DSPs themselves do all the fax negotiation /
compression and it works extremely well.

However, we're also running * on that machine via CAPI, and the board gives us
the flexibility to share 8 channels between * and Hylafax really easily :)

Cheers,
Gavin.

Wow that eicon is certainly quite expensive... ive found 2 sellers in the UK
so far selling at over £1000 . I think the Junghans comes in at around £600.
Is the Eicon that much better ?
