RE: [Asterisk-Users] Voice controlled calling?

2005-04-07 Thread Andrejus Stavickis
Hi,

As far as I know, there is a possibility to make a phone to dial an
extention when you pickup the phone. If the phone can do that (I know
the Grandstream BT101 has that possibility I have no exposure to other
phones yet) then you can do whatever you wish within the extension user
gets in.

Sincerely,

Hello all, rumours reach me of a way that the UK incumbent
operator is planning to compete with VOIP by offering voice
 activated dialling, e.g.
pick up the handset and through speech dial from your
personnel directory, this leads me to wonder if this could be
performed with Asterisk and Festival? I have looked in the
WiKi and goggled, but can find no information on if this is
possible, (particularly with SIP?) hence this question, has
 anyone achieved this?
Intent would be to make is simple for non technical person -
E.g. Grandma picks up the phone, does not have to worry
about entering any digits and then makes call by voice
control - for example call daughter etc. The key here is
not to need any human interaction with the phone, other then
picking up handset, the rest controlled by voice.
 Many thanks
 Magnus

Magnus Are you freaking psychic?

You are not going to believe this but I just finished a phone call 5
minutes ago with a California based developer who has a proprietary
version of this already available and is looking to share this with the
asterisk community.

His does even more than you are looking for so watch this space, he's
also going to get involved with an Asterisk working group on off board
speech recognition so it may be a few weeks before anything is
announced.

Cheers,
Dean

The SPA-841 can do hotline calling - special dialplan string (see the admin
docs) - very useful for doing BizFon-like auto-voicemail checking. The OP
prompted me to lookup Sphinx - im installing it as i type. Sounds like an
interesting idea(*mad scientist laugh*.muahahaha... :-)

That effort is underway here at LiveVoip as well. *22 drops you into the
Voice Section. Its going to be a paid for offering in Mid May.

RE: [Asterisk-Users] Voice controlled calling?

2005-04-07 Thread Alex Vishnev
Magnus,

As far as I remember, Festival is only Text-to-speech, not voice
recognition. In order to do what you want you need a voice recognition
application. Also, compression gives voice recognition quite a challenge, as
the speech samples arriving at the voip voice recognition engine is not the
same as it was spoken using regular 64kbits pstn connection (as an example).

If http://www.shazam.com/ can identify music tracks over a GSM mobile, then it
must surely be possible for voice with a quiet background to be discerned :)

It is ... however Shazam have a complete archive of virtually every bit
of music produced (and they license it too) and very clever algorithms
that can compare sections of music very quickly. They sort of
signature/MD5 every 10 seconds of music and compare that with the
signature of the bit of music that's being played to them.

But as far as the original question goes for BT (the encumbant) offering
this to compete with VoIP services - I cant imagine why. They may be
doing it to compete with CPS (carrier pre select) and other initiatives
which are driving retail customers away in droves. In the UK there are
probably less than 40,000 VoIP users - of which Wanadoo have the
majority (all the others - excluding Skype - have less than 15,000).

In 2006 BT (if not earlier) BT start migrating their core infrastucture
to what's known as their 21CN (21st Century network). This puts IP in
EVERY exchange in the UK, and ALL voice traffic is carried over IP. This
will extend into the home, so if you have an IP phone it will work with
BT's network, if you have an analogue line as soon as it hits the
exchange it's converted to H.248. If they actually manage to get it
going (which they are very likely to) the PSTN disappears in 2009. At
that point it's likely that every UK telco that isn't BT, goes out of
business too.
