Sadly this doesn't seem to do OpenVPN, though it does several other

looking into it.

I don't know if these are available in the US (presuming you are from
that area in te world), but there are DSL modem/router suppliers who
sell an Ethernet version of their product complete with internal ATA. I
know some of them have VPN functionality, so that might work around some
of your limitations. They are not Raspberry Pi priced, but not *that*
much more.

Developing something yourself from the ground up might be more expensive
in the short/mid term

I am thinking along the lines of a Draytek Vigor2110Vn, the wifi and
routing capabilities are not used, but the SIP, VPN and FXS should be
able to fit your needs. And with the possibility for automatic
provisioning using an ACS..

That does indeed seem to be the case. I found some info on Open USB FXS
- a circuit board template and BOM :) Probably a bit closer to the
electronics than I really wanted to be, and they don't sell the kit

Well if anyone runs across an asterisk-channel-supported USB FXS device,

Nifty! Love this Raspberry Pi. I keep thinking of new things I want to

reminds me of all the hubbub over running asterisk on the Plug PC (which
seems to have died off); this has even more power and more utility IMO.

Hopefully the problems will be solved soon, but until then it is
probably not the ideal device for that purpose.

I have heard that. In fact originally I started looking at this
differently - that I could couple a SLIC design with the Raspberry Pi to
make an FXS ATA, using the Pi's audio jack and the GPIO, with some kind
of mic... I found this:

https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rowetel.com%2Fdownloads%2Fslic_4281219.pdf

An old (expired!) patent for a SLIC with discrete components... might be
a fun project...

I got talked into looking for a USB based solution by a friend, which
seemed like an easy way out. Until I discovered that it just doesn't
exist :)

Yes, but that goes against the spending a gazillion dollars

Basically I would like to build an ATA out of a Raspberry Pi :) Ideally

Doesn't support OpenVPN...

Our architecture (hosted PBX offering) works entirely over OpenVPN - the
phones we provide do it natively (Yealink). Haven't been able to find
an ATA that will. So our customers that have analog devices today need
an ATA that can reach their hosted PBX. Today we front a PAP2T
(actually the Cisco equiv now that the Linksys line is EOL) with a
DD-WRT box whose only function is to provide OpenVPN access to their
hosted PBX.

Now I have this awesome little box - the Raspberry Pi - that can run
asterisk natively for $35 (well closer to $50 with the needed parts).
Obviously it can also run OpenVPN. Gives me all kinds of possibilities
for tracking link quality. If I could find a USB FXS dongle that would
work as an asterisk channel (much like Xorcom devices are supported by
dahdi), I would be all set. I wouldn't expect such a device to cost
much more than $30 - $50, which gets me what I need for $100, which is
currently what I spend on the DD-WRT/Cisco combo.

The basic question was has anyone made a USB FXS device work with
asterisk. Now that I have additionally defended my architecture
decisions, can anyone actually answer the question?

Thanks,

j
