Re: [AUCTeX-devel] question regarding installation under Windows

2018-09-10 Thread michael malone
Dear David, Mose

Apologies for not getting back to you regards confirming whether your
instruction to install AUCTeX using the Emacs package manager was successful.

Well I am happy to say that it was successful and everything is working
perfectly. Thank you very much for your help and also for the work you do
maintaining AUCTeX.

Referring specifically to the installation instructions, indeed it does say to
install AUCTeX using the Emacs package manager in the docs but unfortunately I
found the legacy installation instructions first that were linked in my first
email.

Perhaps as part of the old installation instructions you could include a
disclaimer that the instructions are out of date and perhaps a link to the
relevant current instructions.

This may be helpful for other emacs amateurs like myself 

Thanks again for the info!

Best,

Michael

Actually this is already explained in the installation instructions:
https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gnu.org%2Fsoftware%2Fauctex%2Fmanual%2Fauctex.html%23Installationdata=02%7C01%7C%7C76c1b3c3b9404d16082f08d611d02d87%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435%7C1%7C0%7C636715983139430158sdata=5g5pKU2zAgeDOlZwaXoO5FuOZt0D0roz02GfE3XI5os%3Dreserved=0
Other installation procedures are left there for reference (maybe it's
a bad idea?), but there is almost never a good reason to use anything
else besides ELPA to install AUCTeX.

Bye,
Mosè

We probably should overhaul our installation instructions. Emacs comes
with a package manager these days, and AUCTeX is available from there.
So if you get an Emacs installed and do

M-x package-list-packages RET

you should be able to find AUCTeX in that list and install it (using "i"
I think).

I don't think you should be experiencing problems under Windows; be sure
to report back either way.

[AUCTeX-devel] question regarding installation under Windows

2018-09-03 Thread michael malone
Hi,

I am not a programmer but I require the use of Emacs/auctex in Windows so I can
work in latex using voice recognition.

Because I’m not a programmer the issues or questions I may have may be very
basic so apologies.

I am following the detailed instructions for installing auctex found here
https://www.gnu.org/software/auctex/manual/auctex/Installation-under-MS-Windows.html

So far I have completed successfully steps 1 to 7. I have a question regarding
step 8. Step 8 specifies that you should open “some shell (typically Bash)
capable of running configure”. As I am working on Windows there is no native
bash shell that can run the configure command. It wasn’t specified but how do
you work around this?

Is the only method to complete this step to activate the “window subsystem for
Linux” feature in Windows 10? Or is there another method that may be more
straightforward?

I felt like I wanted to ask before continuing because I have first-hand
experience with the precariousness of installing Linux software on a Windows
machine. I wasted a lot of time in the past trying to install Vim plug-ins in
GVim on Windows. I eventually give up which is now why I am trying Emacs :-)

Anyway, any feedback would be appreciated!
Regards,
Mike
